Alena Kostornaia

Sorry, I didn't mean to single out any group of fans. And I'm sure Alina would be happy for Aliona if she won; they seem to get along well. :agree:

I was just thinking that Aliona was kind of an underdog, so now people are happy about her success, but if she continues to dominate, inevitably people will start complaining about her being over scored...

:thank:

Yes. Yes, they will. It is the nature of being on top of the game. :confused2:

I posted on another forum that I dread the day people in the respective 3A fandoms start turning on each other. :( BUT, today is not that day! :hap10: And when that day arrives, as it inevitably will, no one has to participate in it! :cool14:

And, yes, just like that, Alyona lost underdog status and Alina went back to having 'underdoggish' status.

It's weird - for awhile everyone wants to be on the side that's winning. Then everyone is looking for the next shiny new thing. (I remember last season when literally every skater was a 'breath of fresh air' except my fave.) Then somehow the 'it girl' is the one everyone is soooo tired of hearing about.

But none of that stuff is real. It's all just opinions and noise. Loving your favorite skaters and appreciating their athleticism and artistry and all the things they are bringing to the sport, all that is real. :ghug:

Getting this thread back on track - Alyona is amazing! :hap57:

Aleksandra, Alyona, Anna all had wonderful debuts in the seniors, previously unthinkable for newcomers. But fully deserved. All their scores will even rise once the season gets underway and their routines get fine tuned.

And of course, anti-fans will start complaining about them being 'over scored'. Those numbers are only relative, it is the ranking that counts, and with all of the former 3 Aces still growing in power, skill and confidence, their limits have not yet been discovered. They will rank 1st in many competitions.

Those Russian former skaters, retired trainers, etc. might be a little chauvinistic in their assessments but this season at least, I cannot think any skater will best Aleksandra, Alyona or Anna if all skate cleanly. Russian Nationals and Grand Prix finals and possibly World Championships will be the competitions where they will compete between themselves, and like last year, it could very well be these three on the medal rostrum in different order every time.

There will always be a people who would complain about overscoring of this or that skater. But I would advise you to read some amount of comments under the recent videos of 4A skates. Under which video do you think there are more vile attacks towards particular skaters? Definitely not under Alina's. Also, after JO, where Sasha scored over Alina, hardy anybody of Alina fans complained. If there were attracks then they were aimed precisely the other way than you suggest. Those were Alina fans who had to read words like "wrong russian won the olympics", "Alina should retire" and countless of other frindly regards from the fans of other girls. That's why, when I read what you have written, I have to say that the feelings are - strange.

BTW, it is even stranger. Before ISU has banned comments under JGP videos, the most hostile comments cold have been found precisely under Aliona's junior debut video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uie4rcBGOb4
But definitely not from Alina fans, the most frequented words you could have read there were "Yuna Kim the queen" and "another russian thief". But the fate has a sense for irony when just now Aliona is often promoted as a "Yuna Kim's successor" and when very similar words that were two years ago used against Aliona I can now read from a people who claim to be Aliona's fans used against other skaters and fans

So, I'm not ordering anything of course, I just ask politely, do not write what you have written above. I'm, big fan of Alina but I'm a fan of the all Eteri's team and I don't have the smallest problem when Anna, Sasha or Aliona (or any other girl not from the team) would score over her fair and square.

There will always be clueless trolls that will complain of overscoring even if the scores were fair. As a fan of both, lets not instigate a rivalry between them.

I wanted to try out this entrance this morning (with a waltz jump, not a 3A!) and so my daughter and I slowed the video to watch carefully - we are nearly certain it's a right back inside counter to a forward right inside counter, which leaves her on a right back inside edge. Then she power pulls onto a right back outside edge and steps forward into the jump takeoff.

It's definitely either a rocker or counter, as you can see clearly she is changing from one circle to another with each turn. (3 turns and brackets remain on the same circle.) Well, I can say it is definitely difficult to do and a bit scary but quite fun - although I can't imagine trying it at her rate of speed! Her knee action and edges are lovely and so well controlled.

So pleased to see Alena is happy and skating well! She's such an exciting talent and I love watching her skate.

I think Jackie Wong would call it a rocker and I have heard Ted Barton refer to it as a bracket.. but that is the extent of my knowlege ... so much credit to you two for attempting this. I am 73 so not a skater now but was in the dim, distant past.. would probably break my neck with this .. haha...
Alena is superb, I agree and a delight. No stress, fear, just pure joy.. she has been on my radar as one to watch since early juniors.. she is on my long list of favorites but at the top.
Thanks for sharing your input and good luck with the rocker...!!

A bit late, but congrats to Aliona for her amazing senior debut! Wish her an amazing season as well! :)

And then, as well as the anti-fans, you also get the "not" fans, a fan of somebody because he/she is "not-sb-else". They latch on to anyone who represents a plausible alternative to another target: a new base from where they hope to launch missiles. (I suspect that at least some of the sudden new-found battalions of Alёna (and Kseniya) fans fall into that category.
Of course, genuine fans outnumber "not-sb-else" fans, for obvious reasons. But still, the "not" fans need to be watched and shunned, since their purpose is essentially insincere.
(I'm not talking about here on GS, so much as out in the wild social media space, Yt, gossip sites etc.)

ADDED: I realised, that's effectively what you're referring to here:

Thank you so much! I will stick to a snail's pace with it and hopefully remain in one piece  It's incredible how difficult the most minor steps are - skating is truly a challenge and I have so much respect for what these elite athletes are able to achieve.

Yes! I find Alёna one of the most relaxing to watch out of my collection of favourites, even in high-stakes, high-tension contests :2thumbs:

does anyone know who made her dresses this year? i've been stalking dressmakers on instagram with no clues anywhere. whoever did, did a wonderful job.

From an interview to Massimiliano Ambesi:
Alena Kostornaia is almost an ethereal figure. She is the total package like Yuzuru Hanyu, the skater who, without ifs and buts, changed the history of the discipline.
She is a girl with a rare smoothness, an innate elegance, an ability to identify with the music and the part that creates instant empathy.
Then there is the rest, because we are talking about a skater who has already landed in competition a jump like the triple axel, that is only for a select few, inserting perfectly the element into the choreography without any kind of pauses or downtime.
Usually, not much is said about the sequences of steps, but for Kostornaia it is necessary to emphasize the quality of the turns, characterized not only by the obvious edge of entry but also by the more and more rare edge of exit, denoting top class skating skills and attention to detail.

[interviewer]
Reading in the net and listening to your words, I get the impression that Kostornaia is considered something different from all the others. What did you think the first time you saw her compete in an international competition?

I thought about The Foreigner, an American band, popular in the late seventies and early eighties. The refrain of one of their main hits sounded like this: "I had been waiting for a girl like you to come into my life".

wow, that's probably the best compliment you can get as a skater!

Re Alyona's skating skills and jumps, these are the work of Dudakov and Rozanov? The artistry is most likely by Gleikhengauz/Tutberidze and Alyona herself, but D and R deserve all the credit for raising Alyona to this level of skating.

I know you mean well in your comment so sorry in advance! l'll carry on giving all the credit to Alyona. :)
