Protocol for Sasha:
As I suspected, spins got downgraded, they were level 4s for the majority of this season. It's a bit strange, I'm not sure what to make of this. No video.
Jumps all clean, very good skate actually. He lost about 2-3 points on those spins.

For the flying camel, maybe he didn't hold the catch-foot position long enough? I think it took him half a rotation to grab his blade, so it could've been counted as 1.5 revolutions instead of the necessary 2 revolutions. I dunno...

I do, selfishly, want him to change the camel because I don't find this position very attractive. I know other people have done similar positions without me protesting. I think Sasha's could be better with the leg not bent so far though.

Thank you!

Hmm... tech panel was a little bit harsh on those spins. Also, the 3Z did not get the second half credit (which I find stranger than the spins), he usually gets that bonus, another loss of 0.6. Little bit here and there, it adds up to a not insignificant loss of points. He should have been quite a bit closer to Artur. Oh well. But he made no obvious errors of his own doing so I'm going to count this as a clean performance. :)

Edit:

Yeah, I don't like that position either. Surely his team can come up with more interesting combinations. I hope Mishin does something about this.

I'm afraid Mishin might like it. :p Plushy did something similar in Sochi. (I didn't really mind that one, however. Maybe Sasha just needs to grow taller. :))

Thank you! I think he did very well - good luck for the free! :)

I do wonder who did the commentary - great background info. I'm especially curious about the male commentator, of course, as he said he'd been coached by Mishin for eight years - does anyone know?

Yeah, a couple inches taller would help with the jumps too.

Male commentator was Ari.

^Sasha is a handsome guy, I can't believe this is ALL that the media took of him. And these pics weren't even on the main event page, I had to do a name search on the site. No fan pictures either but that's understandable since the audience turnout has been abysmal.

Btw, gallavich you got a shout-out from the owner of Sasha's baidu bar. She thanked you for the ESPN link to his SP. :)

I have no words. FS was a complete disaster. 9th place overall. But what kind you do if your body is not 100% well.

Sigh. Depressed.

But I will wait for an interview to see what he has to say.

Oh, that's nice! I've added his FS, if anyone can bear to watch it again. So sad, but we know he was sick, so I give him credit for trying his best.

Thank you. The Russian language stream was horrid for me. It kept freezing and the annoying commentator was comparing Sasha to Adian.

Well, at least Sasha didn't look too depressed about the results. Sigh.

Thanks gallavich - I haven't seen it at all yet, but am preparing to... I know it all went to heck in a handbasket, though - I'm glad I wasn't watching live! it was bad enough reading about it, if I had been watching, I'd have been heartbroken... Oh, well... I was hoping for about 6th place for him, so 9th is disappointing, but... it's not as if he lost out on a medal or anything. Any thought if this result will impact the rest of his season? Will he be competing in Junior Nationals as well?

ETA - After having watched it; Loved his little dance after the program - Good for him!

Yes, he's definitely going to Junior Nationals. How will this impact the rest of his season? Well, Rus Fed doesn't particularly like (nor dislike) Sasha, so they might get ideas and send Adian for Junior Worlds too (I think Russia has 3 spots). If so, then goodbye Junior Worlds medal for Sasha since I doubt ISU wants 2 Russian men on the podium, unless of course Boyang and one of the Japanese men bomb then Sasha might get lucky. Of course winning Junior Nationals is in doubt too, for similar reasons. But silver at Junior Nationals should be no problem, since even a sick Sasha can beat Samarin and Aliev.

Edit:
Sasha didn't need to skate clean today to finish 5th. I'm sad it turned out the way it did but he has a great work ethic and a strong personality, so he should bounce back. But Mishin needs to rethink his strategy of sending his top pupils to so many competitions. This was Sasha's 9th competition this year. Initially I wanted to believe that the schedule would not affect his health/fitness, but I cannot ignore the fact that fatigue probably played a large part in him picking up a high fever last week.

Perhaps. But people do fall sick even without competing strenuously - he might not have done all those competitions, and still fallen ill anyway. Who knows?

In the interview after his SP Sasha said fatigue played a part as this is his 9th start. Although he also said that competing was good practice too.

Ultimately, I don't think there is any "perfect strategy" - everything has its pros and cons - its rewards and risks. One can only do what seems the wisest at the time. Still, for the most part in those competitions he has been impressively consistent - I think we can "allow" him one really bad skate ;) - and not let it mar what he has achieved thus far.

(I was going to say "meltdown" - but oddly enough... bad as it was... it didn't seem like a "meltdown" to me... Yes, maybe I'm making no sense, but... what can I say?:))
