Alexander Petrov

It seems that Sasha will only fly back to SPB on Monday and then on Tuesday he will fly off to Sarajevo. Strange arrangements but oh well.

Yeah, going straight from Bratislava would seem to make more sense. And I can't seem to find any other way to end my post than to echo your words: Oh, well... :)

I just finished watching both SP and FS with Finnish commentary so I'm probably going to post rough translation from what they had to say about Sasha. I don't have time to do it now, but at some point today, when I get home from school.

I finally found a Mishin interview. It's a transcription of the TV interview he gave to Match TV.

"Honored coach of Russia Alexei Mishin immediately after the free program in the men's figure skating at the European Championships in Bratislava, he spoke to broadcaster "Match TV" on the results of the tournament and the winners and for his own ward - Alexander Petrov. http://cs627830.vk.me/v627830926/42d11/dvMZBDwjC80.jpg

The winner - Javier Fernández

- Javier Fernandez - a man who is dangerous even for Hanyu. The Spaniard is riding and exploring the charm, charming the audience. Scores that he receives - are valid.

On the second place Alexey Bychenko

- We congratulate Lesha Bychenko, because the athlete from Israel for the first time stands on the podium. It is important.

About bronze medalist - Maxim Kovtun
- Kovtun needs to find the quality that is necessary. He must show what he is able to do. What accounts for his mistakes? There are coaching ethics. I think that our veteran sports, our wonderful Lena Vodorezova is a great athlete and a great person, one of the few in the world of figure skating who adequately perceives victory and defeat ... She will understand.

About performance by Alexander Petrov (8th place)
- He did great. The true feature of a champion - is the ability to show what you are able do. And Alexander Petrov has this unique quality. With this athlete it's possible to go far. He has practically fulfilled the goals set for himself. The athlete didn't feel well before the beginning of the competition, but I'm satisfied with his performance. He is one of the youngest participants of the European Championship (16). We are going our own way, how - I know. We plan to develop quads. Next Tuesday we fly to the competition in Sarajevo, where we will participate. Rest only in our dreams. "

Food for thought, food for thought.

Edit:
I just finished watching both SP and FS with Finnish commentary so I'm probably going to post rough translation from what they had to say about Sasha. I don't have time to do it now, but at some point today, when I get home from school.
Thanks in advance!

Another Mishin interview, this time with team-russia. It's not the same as the one above.

"Yesterday, January 28, at the European Championships in figure skating in Bratislava (Slovakia) was raffled prizes in the men's competition. European champion with a score of 302.77 points for the fourth time in a row was the Spaniard Javier Fernandez. Silver won Alexey Bychenko from Israel, who collected 242.56 points and 0.35 points ahead of bronze medalist Russians Maxim Kovtun. Results of the tournament men's special correspondent portal TEAM RUSSIA-2014 Boris Jodorowsky said coach Alexei Mishin.

- Of course, against the background of European skaters Javier Fernandez allocated, - said Alexei Mishin. - All the others did not avoid mistakes. I foresee a question about Maxim Kovtun and to put it succinctly: he knows how much, but sometimes avoids showing it.

The performance of your pupil Alexander Petrov, who took his debut at the European Championship in eighth place, satisfied?
- Very satisfied. He showed that he belongs to the category of athletes who are able to showcase the skills in training that they developed. All my athletes who won medals at world and European championships, differed from others. They showed in the competition what they are able to do.

The current generation of skaters tend to perform two programs in five quadruple jump. Why Generation Alexei Yagudin and Evgeni Plushenko did not drive for such complexity?
- They could also jump five quads. Just such rules existed, that there was no need. Even American Timothy Goebel, who became a bronze medalist at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, it could. In times of Igor Bobrina he was in the Soviet Union skater, who in the long program did seven triple toe loop, but even today I can not remember his name. Time opens new human possibilities.

Something has changed in the methods of training?
- The current generation as technical specimens takes Alexei Urmanov, Yagudin and Plushenko. Another thing is that there was such a guy with a phenomenal constitution like Yuzuru Hanyu. He has a unique, small moment of inertia. In second place - is our Eugene Medvedeva.

Pursuit of the difficulty is not reflected in the artistic side of the program?
- Complexity - is imperative. Beautiful program are forgotten, and record scores serve as motivation for those who want to beat them."

Okay so, this might be a really long post so apologies:

SP:
The first thing they mentioned is that he is very young and also looks that way (obviously). And after the program they said that he is still a bit juniorish.

About the jumps they mentioned his superb technique in 3A ("like straight from Mishin's textbook") and his really fast rotation in the lutz-toeloop combination, especially in the toeloop.
During the step sequence they noticed some Plushenko-like movements and manners especially in the arm movements.
And of course in their opinion too, he has to improve his spins to get them on the same level as everything else.

After the program they praised his precise work in everything he did and the huge amount of routine that he performed with. And I somehow got the impression that they were expecting higher points for Sasha but I might be wrong about that.

FS:
One of the commentators had met Mishin in the hotel, and he had mentioned Sasha's illness, and he didn't have any high expectations for Sasha. They talked a bit about him maybe not being in the best posible shape.

About the elements, really nothing special. He looked really sure about every element, spins again, all that. But they loved the program. They really praised the whole program from the music to the choreography and to the way he performed. They even compared his performance to Amodio's performance in the way that they both included the audience. Again the precise work in the whole program got a mention. And again I feel like they were expecting higher points, especially in the program components.

Overall they rated the free program higher, but both performances did recieve positive comments.
And in altogether I thought there were a lot or constructive comments. :)

Thank you for translating! Yes, they raised valid points. :)

I screened through twitter and instagram like I usually do after major competitions and the vast majority of the comments about his LP are quite positive. And this praise is not only coming from those who speak English but also from people writing in a couple other languages. They like his elegance, the beautiful arm movements, his 3A of course, his attention to detail, his lines, his flow across the ice and overall the way he presents himself. Someone called his skating "classical" and "cultured".

Actually why is he staying on in Bratislava for 2-3 extra days? Or are all of Team Russia booked on the same return flight back to Moscow from Vienna? Odd.

Unless he's been invited to the gala? When is that?
The gala is on the afternoon of the 31st. I don't expect him to be invited to the gala since he finished 8th. But if he does indeed end up being invited, then it probably means they knew before hand, which is strange but not impossible. And then of course if he does get invited, is it going to be "Just a gigolo"? Dun dun dun...

Yep. I know.

Oh, another thought. Maybe it's simply that Sasha wants to stay on and watch the rest of the competiton and cheer on his team-mates. It's his first senior major competition, after all; it's going to be a really special experience for him.
