I'm so happy! I didn't want to say, because I didn't want to jinx him - but I wasn't worried about the free skate. After having seen the short, I just felt this... sense of security from him. As an accumulation built up from his previous competitions - this solidity to his skating. Even if he'd make a mistake, I didn't think he'd let it snowball into a disaster.

I didn't expect the clean quad - not so soon, but I knew it was coming.

But yeah, he did the best among all the skaters from his school who came to Saransk to compete. It was hard for all of them.
 
And just because I haven't made any comments on the relative PCS marks doesn't mean that I agree with it. But nothing can be done about it.

First I was a bit puzzled, but then... Yes, I suppose.:)

The thing is, after putting it into the program he went from DG+fall, to UR+no fall to clean quad. Considering that I think this was a good rate of progression - and also I expected him to be rather tired and possibly worn-out after these two busy weeks, so...

I suppose he is physically tired but maybe mentally he isn't.

I mean in June already we saw him do UR+no fall quad. It's just that for competition after competition after Nebelhorn they kept asking him to do the "play safe" strategy. And it never worked to his advantage.

Despite what many people said (including that sports agent), I just refused to believe that a boy who could jump 3A-3T easily at age 13 can't master a quad. Every single time I read or heard someone say "Petrov can't do a quad" it just irked me so much. So finally today I feel some sort of vindication. But most importantly, I'm just happy for him.

I never doubted he'd get the quad either.
 
Yay!! Finally he did it! It really looked solid, so hopefully it's one less thing for us to worry about. :)

Anyway, I can't help laughing at that 2Lz+2T. Gladly the fall didn't really have any impact on the final result...

Sasha basically can do a UR/downgraded 4Lz. He can "land" it standing up. I'm not sure whether he would be able to land it fully-rotated. But fully-rotated 4F is quite possible, eventually.

First of all this is amazing and I really hope this won't be just something they say for the next however many years.

But yeah, what happened to the "4Lo is possible but 4S not so much" or did Sasha ever even say something along those lines? Do I remember completely wrong?
And I think he is probably able to rotate 4F, but then there is the edge call problem. (Which, I imagine, could even become more of a problem with him trying to rotate the 4F(?))
 
Well, I for one won't start clamouring for additional quads right off the bat - I would expect the quad to be put into the SP first (maybe a quad combo), but obviously not at junior Worlds' as quads aren't allowed in the short anyway. I'm fine with slow & steady progress - as long as there is progress, which there didn't seem to be for a while. Now they're allowing him to put the quad into his programs, I'm satisfied for now.

It's interesting, though, as that seems to indicate that indeed it was a mental block, and that it has been overcome, if he is either landing, or they think he will soon land, other types of quads.

No you didn't remember wrongly, that's what Sasha said in 2015 about his 4Lo vs 4S.

I've seen Sasha's 4S, he has the same problem with it as he did with his 4T, not enough speed/momentum going into the jump to generate the necessary height needed to completely rotate it. I saw it last year though so maybe it has gotten better since then. But don't expect Mishin to put it in his layout anytime soon.

As for 4F, I don't know whether I will ever be able to see it in his layout, given that it took Mishin 3 years to even allow him to try a 4T. So don't take what Mishin said too seriously, given that he's also said many times in the past that he would never coach a non-Russian skater on a permanent basis.

Anyway, Sasha just needs 1 quad in SP and 1 or 2 in FS with near clean skates to make it into the Euros team. It's not too hard. He should be capable of that by next season, that is IF his coaches will allow him to try such a layout. It's a very big "if".

Yes, I know that we have to take what Mishin says with a grain of salt. But even then I think it is positive that he is talking about Sasha doing more quads in the future.

It's not the first time Mishin has said this. In 2014 he talked abt 4T and 4Lo. Last year he also said there would be other quads.

Do I think Sasha is capable of different types of quads other than the toe? Yes of course. He may very well be able to land a 4S already and in the past it was insinuated that he was almost able to land 4Lo.

Am I taking this statement from Mishin as something positive about the way his coaches are handling him? No. Maybe if Mishin finally changes Sasha's ISU profile after 3 years of coaching Sasha I will.

Never have I ever doubted this skater's talent.
What I do not have faith in is his coach's level of investment in him.
