A few days ago Aljona Savchenko said that should Yuzuru Hanyu decide to switch to pairs, he would succeed. I took it as a great compliment, and from someone who knows what she's speaking of! (I know nothing about pairs I confess.) Then I tried to figure out who may be his partner (to get a greater strength in solo and thrown jumps, and perfect spins etc, as I suppose twist lifts would be the most challenging for him; not lifts, he's consistently practising even as the lifted person and he seems perfectly aware of all the movements/balances implied) and of course, the first I thought of was Alexandra Trusova because they have already jumped a 4T side-by-side and Yuzuru Hanyu managed to catch her way and rhythm at the third attempt, which I find great. So, I thought that for quads and combination jumps (and probably throw jumps) they would be great together, but now, they don't have the same style of skating, her spins wouldn't match his so they couldn't earn points there, so would 3A, etc, plus she's 1m58 now, too tall for his 1m72 I suppose. I didn't think further about Alexandra Trusova in pairs. I assume she is starting a long and successful career in skating and didn't really consider pairs but why not? Should someone like her switch to pairs, it would boost pairs both in level and in audience I suppose? Though it seems already pretty hard. And as you say, which partner? Nathan Chen has been evoked but what about his hip problem? Plus, there would be a problem of stamina, as in single programs he is not able to do both elements and entries/transitions (nor performance), while Alexandra Trusova does deliver. He's 21 now, maybe he will grow there? Plus he's really not tall (1m64?) Shoma Uno and Kévin Aymoz, whose styles would be rather compatible with hers, seem too small for her too. But among the younger ones, we don't know yet who will develop into tall, athletic, great skaters in a few years. So, I would say, not for now (and I'm sure she will remain in singles for a while) but why not later? And just because it would please her/she would find there a challenge at her measure, not out of renouncing to get what she wants in single skating, this would not do with her.
