Alina Zagitova

Guys, let’s remember that Alina already has won all the major titles in figure skating, and everything else is just icing on top. So, while the figure skating fan in me selfishly hopes she continues competing, I want her to do what she wants. If she just does test skates, or stops competing all together to pursue new goals, I will be happy for her and root for her continued success and happiness. I think Alina has the potential to be great in lots of things, not just figure skating!

As far it’s her decision I think everything is fine.

Strange decision to not be in the lists. I have a couple of ideas why but still puzzling.

It’s strange to not see her as she is part of the team and selfishly I would love to see her, but you know, she is Alina Zagitova. If she decides to compete, all she needs to do is raise her finger and she is in any cup she wants to, haha.

Winning all the major titles as a junior and senior is virtually unprecedented and Alina has done that. Because she's done that by the age of 16 there was never really any reason to learn triple axels or quads which are a danger and she has that Schlatters syndrome in her knees. I think she will still skate at a very high quality maybe not at the 3A level but that's okay she can still win Challengers and get on podiums in Grand Prix events and that's really all I want. Another factor to keep her going competitively is how much of a financial hit will she take only doing shows which don't even exist anymore? Will she keep her endorsements which are very lucrative or will they be cut in half or eliminated altogether if she's not competing? Alina reportedly made 1.1 million US dollars in 2019. That's phenomenal and a lot of rubles. There is a lot to factor into her decision making including University. Fortunately it's Alina's decision to make and she has all the facts she needs. I'm hoping she is happy and in good form at rest skates. I can't wait to see what her new programs are in how she will do with them. Another reason for Alina to stay around for years is to see her continue to develop as an artist and with her interpretation and musicality. We all know she has made great strides in those departments the last two or three years and I want to see that continue and I hope it does.

From Team Zagitova IG (google translated):

Alina Zagitova will play herself in the Japanese version of the film "The Story of a Palm" ⁣⁣⠀⁣⁣⠀
⁣⁣⠀⁣⁣⠀
The director of the film, Alexander Domogarov, spoke in an interview about the participation of Alina and Masaru in the film:
“The Japanese producers really liked the script of the film, and when they asked me what I wanted to include in the Japanese part of the film, I was confused because Russia and Japan have different cultures, mentality and linguistic nuances, but the history of the film is the same for the whole world. Alina Zagitova is well known in Japan and has many fans, in the film she plays herself”. ⁣⁣⠀

The Russian version of the film will be released in October this year, and the Japanese version in 2021.⁣⁣

Relevant parts about Alina (copied directly from GT - sorry :p):
Why is Arena Zagitowa appearing?
The Japanese version of the story of Bees and Parma is literally based on the Russian version of the story and is a sequel to the story. The location was held in Odate City , Akita Prefecture , before the spread of the new coronavirus .

This was the first experience for a director to make a film with a Japanese person. His father, Alexander Domogarov, who appeared in the Japanese version, said in the movie " Sakurakin saw Sorokin

“Japanese producers liked the scenario and, through my dad, told me I wanted to include the Japanese part of this film. When I was asked, I was confused at first. There are lots of plots, many characters, Russia and Japan have different cultures, different mentalities, and different nuances of language, but the story is common to all humankind. So we decided to work together, the Japanese are good at producing approaches, know the market well and know the tastes of the audience. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and got to appear with his pet dog Masaru. Zagitowa player is well known in Japan, and there are many fans.

I'm not sure but seems like the japanese version, where Alina's cameo will be shown is a sequel to the russian version, which is why it will premiere later.

Any competition/exibition manager would love to enlist Alina, but if we talk about international competitions with limited places for russian girls both Alina and Zenya have no chance anymore to be selected, unless something unexpected happens afters this big pause.
That's why I was angry last year.
Zenya's work with Orser was starting to pay off and Alina's skating was showing something new and very beautiful on the artistic side.
IT was like Aline gained self awareness and confidence.
They both have so much to give to us skating fans and yet they found themself in a dark corner just because selection for EU and world championship is based on the flag you represent, to the point that Alina and Samodurova could not even defend their titles.
This needs to change.

Alina took a break so she couldn’t been selected anyway. The spots are three everyone knows that and they do accordingly. I don’t think there is anything to change there and definitely not for Alina. If she wants she can compete for this spots again.

As for her looking happy and confident early last season, yes she was. But in her case I don’t know how motivated is to receive wrong edges and time deductions.

We're going OT here (so feel free to remove my post).
Even considering this is an abnormal situation (same school having more than half of the top 10 skaters) and, like when it happened with the US, time will see other school closing the gap, I can't approve the federation selecting the skaters and decide who is "worthy".
Represeting Russia (or any other country) is bull****: it'an individual sport and the skaters should represent themself first and their school second.
I don't want to remove flags ot other crazy idea, and I believe federations should be allowed spots to present their best candidates, but the best skaters in the world (let's say top 10) should be allowed to participate in big events because of their own achievement and merit.

The most crazy thing to me is that medalist wiin their federation an extra spot for next edition instead of winning themself the right to defend their medals. Granting that right to the champion is the minimun of respect, but ISU prefer to give prized to the feds and play politycs (skaters do not play the palace game)

I don’t know what schools has to do with anything. There are three spots per country and there are gp, challenge series etc if someone wants to compete outside the 3 spots.

Do I want to see Alina Zagitova skate? Yes. do I want her To be judged crap like last season? No. Do I want her to be selected because she is Alina Zagitova? No. I want her to be selected because she skated like Alina Zagitova.

School = Country. That's probably a too much italian way to sum the tradition and the specificity of a country in the sport. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

The positions are clear:
YOU: each country gest 1/2/3 slots. If someone can't get the selection he/she does not deserves to skate at WC or EC
ME: The reigning champion and the top 10 skaters in the world (or EU) are invited directly by ISU <AND> Each country gets 1 or 2 spots to select skaters just like now.

This seems like a necessary change right now.
Skaters should get the right to defend their title the next year after winning, without having to go through the selection process all over again. It would maybe encourage veteran skaters to extend their careers.

On the other hand, the current spots allocation system can cause weird situations where one country with only 1 top skater can get the same number of spots as say, Russia, that has many more skaters than spots available.
But I can see how there could be complaints from smaller or less dominant feds if this were to change for Worlds spots for example.

The unfair judging does seem to have encouraged Alina's break :( Like how she started holding the final pose for like a whole minute after that stupid time violation deduction :bang:

ETA: Sorry for bringing negativity into the FF.

Some lucky Muskovites will watch Alina live In a couple of weeks. I hope she got an interesting program and they will mutually Enjoy the event. Generally I’m not fond of test skates but this time it will be nervous fo the next steps...

In the desert of COVID finance I’m pretty sure there will be broadcast to make some money. It’s just different to watch figure skating live. Especially if practices are open. And Alina’s practices are the best part.
