Did anyone else notice that Alina cried during the national anthem? Poor girl
Can't help but think that she thought about how she was denied the right to here her anthem at her biggest victory and once in a lifetime moment

"denied the right"???
Alina may have been disappointed and angry with herself, but I'll never think she'll deny Samodurova her victory and moment of glory when the Russian National Anthem was being played. Alina made mistakes, Sofia didn't.
Sofia sang proudly along, but we weren't shown Alina. Did she sing along too, through her tears?

I can only imagine what was in her heart and mind at that moment, but I like to think she was singing it in her heart.
Alina has had and is having a very unique Olympic Gold Medal winning journey. Not hearing her anthem or seeing her flag. Not returning home as 'the favorite'. Not becoming an instant media 'darling'. Being 'adopted' by Japan. Slowly winning people over by mainly staying quiet, avoiding attention, graciously acknowledging anything given to her, appreciating her fans and keeping her head down working hard. Alternately winning and losing after the OG but always, always fighting.
Following her journey has been nothing less than inspirational in so many ways. Watching her grow as a skater and become the person she is becoming.
If I was writing the script it would be different. But it's important to remember that if one thing is different then everything is different. I am here, as a fan, to see where her journey takes her. It's not just about seeing her win, it's about seeing her happy.
Her happiness at the Gala today meant more because it came after such a struggle. I'm proud of her. Sometimes only you know when you have won.

Alina is amazing!!
Her Gala performance was perfect and she was excited and full of energy.
People should take a cue from the picture our lovely EdRoz posted above of Sofia hugging Alina and be kinder to skaters.
The measure of one’s greatness is, first of all, character. Alina has great character and has shown she is gracious when being on top of the podium, in the second highest spot or even completely off the podium the two times this happened.
I want to see her wonderful skates for many, many years. I want to see her smile, her kindness and her grit. She has nothing to prove to no one, she won’t stop being great because of a less stellar Skating performance. Or even several of those. As she grows as a performer, changes her tech elements, learns new jumps and improves her artistry and skating skills, things might get bumpy but she will get there. In fact, as far as greatness is concerned, she has already arrived.

She is still growing! Nnnnnnnyet! If she was standing next to Stanislava I could figure out how tall Alina really is because Stasya is about 5'7".
