American Idol - Season 7

My Take on Top 11 March 18:

Amanda-Back in the USSR: Although I will say it seemed she was more comfortable on the stage this week, I totally agree with Simon, she's going to get boring (already is for me) because she has no variety in how she sings. I'm sick already of hearing her "growl".

Kristy Lee--Hide Your Love Away--pitchy...She's not strong enough for this competition at all. I'm not even sure she could be a strong country singer.(IMO that is)

David A.--Long and Winding Road--decent job but not as strong as the week he sang Imagine.

Michael Johns--don't know title of song--He sounded kind of hoarse or something, but he wasn't terrible. Not as good as previous weeks.

Brooke--Here Comes The Sun--I guess I'm biased and her likability just draws me into her. As long as she sings in pitch, I always enjoy her a lot. I disagreed with the judges.

David Cook--Day Tripper--I liked his performance a lot, including the guitar voice-box thing. He reminds me of Daughtry. He was the best male of the night I think.

Carly--Blackbird--I LOVED it...totally disagree with Simon's comments. I think Carly is the strongest female in the competition.

Jason Castro--Michelle--I wasn't GREAT but it was quite nice. Like Simon said, his face sold it, he's charming and not obnoxious and is just very likable (the way Brooke is IMO)

Sayesha--Yesterday--I know that is a classic, well loved Beatles song, but it is one of my least favorites. I like more upbeat music. And to me, Sayesha is just boring.

Chikezie--I've Just Seen A Face--I liked it a lot, it was fun. He's also a likable guy.

Ramiele--I Should've Known Better--again, she's boring...I think there was only one line that she sang that sounded like she could do more than just sort of "whisper sing".

For me, it would be between Kristy Lee, Ramiele or Seyesha to go home this week. I think all the guys were strong enough to remain AT LEAST another week. Brooke and Carly need to stay in to at least the top 5 IMO. I'll give Amanda one more chance since she seemed more comfortable this week and looked a little more pleasing to the eye in her presentation.

I won't go through everyone just the ones that I like/am rooting for

Brooke did not do as well as last week. I agreed that Here Comes The Sun just didn't work for her... it felt way too karaoke

Chikeize was awesome, though I could have handled it without the bluegrass in the second half, but both parts worked. He could very well win the whole thing...

Jason... did very well again... I liked it :)

Syesha was very good, but I hated the small changes she made to the song (not switching the lyrics over so that a female vocal could sing it and it make sense, just the subtle changes in teh melody itself)

Although I'm not disappointed that Amanda went home, I AM surprised that Kristy Lee keeps hanging in there.

I think it might be because Kristy Lee, and Ramiele as well, are getting votes because they are CUTE rather than votes based on their singing.

Was anyone else really surprised to see Carly in the bottom three??? I don't think she deserved to be there by a long shot...I'd have Seyesha or Ramiele in the bottom 3 before Carly!

I had a feeling Amanda would be outa there before she finally got a song right, but I did at least expect her to be around at least another week. I think the reason Kristy Lee edged her out was because she has the All American Girl Next Door thing going, and that appeals to a broader demographic. ITA Carly had no business being in the bottom 3 – like NJSk8Fan, I totally LOVED her performance, and IMHO in one simple song, she showed an ENTIRE range of what she is capable of. The only reason I can think of for her being in the bottom 3 was she chose too offbeat of a song.

I have noticed in general that the same 3 people keep impressing me every week, and everyone else seems to be maintaining the same level – I don’t see a Jordin or a Kimberly Locke (people who started out just OK but out of nowhere kept getting better and better each week and went pretty far) in this group; I think the levels have been set. My Top 3 always seems to be Carly, Brooke (who just radiates a wonderful sunny energy in addition to having a terrific voice), and David Cook (tho I did find his "Day Tripper" this go-round to be pedestrian and predictable); I think among the guys, Archuleta, despite being rather schmaltzy, actually did the best job this week, tho even this early on I am finding his Gosh Golly Gee I’m So Choked Up That You LIKE Me routine makes me GRIND MY TEETH. I swear he bursts into tears faster than Oksana Baiul. Someone on this board (and I for the life of me can’t find the post to credit them) made a comment a few weeks ago that if he’s gonna sing with the big boys, he should ACT like one, and ITA.

As far as the rest of the performances, I think Michael did his best job yet, tho I think it would have been much more effective if he’d STARTED with the "perky part" of the song, and THEN broke into his growling routine; Chikizie, as usual, I had NO idea what to make of his performance; Jason looked like he was about to crack up at any minute and I found the whole thing rather silly; Kristy Lee had a good idea, but backed off vocally when she should have let it rip (by which I mean she should have built up on the momentum of the "Hey!!" part instead of toning it down that much on "You’ve got to hide your love away"),: I really liked what Brooke did with "Here Comes The Sun" (I’m not a huge fan of that song anyway), tho I agree that the Wooo!!! And Then Twirl routine was NOT a good idea, but I give her bonus points for acknowledging that immediately after the performance; Syesha had some stuff in there that I liked but in general I hated the arrangement and her phrasing was a total disaster (she should pay more attention to Carly there; Carly makes IMPECCABLE phrasing choices); Ramiele was again just DULL DULL DULL DULL and WHERE is this alleged "big voice" of hers; and Amanda in spots just sounded like she was coughing up hairballs.

I think Carly is going to start to suffer from being the one that got in because AI tweaked the rules...

a lot of boards have had a lot of people complaining about her... I am not happy with her being on the show... but then I am not moved by her singing either.

I don't delve into all the background of the contestants and don't pay much attention to the news, so I don't know anything about whatever it is that AI broke the rules about letting Carly in.

she had a recording contract, released an album on a label and even had music videos

as far as I'm concerned she had her chance.

That does make a difference, then! If there is a rule, and it is my understanding there is one that the AI contestants aren't supposed to have had contracts/records, etc. previously, then that rule should be upheld 100%!

But I still like her singing.;)

there was a rule, and they changed it sometime during this new season... it's stupid.

I liked Amanda's singing at the beginning of the season, and had been waiting for her to sing a ballad for a change...........too late I guess.......42

I thought she was good at her very first audition, but I'm over her... it was all the same.

re. Amanda: I think my cousin summed it up best when she said, "Well, y'know, maybe if she'd gone out there and JUST SANG instead of trying out the 'rocker b****' routine all the time, she'd've done better."

re. Carly: I too have a problem with the relaxation of the rules; it seems to defeat the whole point of the show. What's next, some 90s one-hit wonder will get in and make a comeback?? That being said, I think Carly is fantastic and I'm willing to overlook it because I like her so much. I have no problem with talented people getting a second chance; nonetheless, this probably shouldn't be the venue for it, admittedly. However -- she's not the only one in the competition who's got an album under her belt. Kristy Lee Cook recorded one in Nashville a few years ago, too.

I agree that Kristy is another one that has it really good...

I kinda wonder about Little David too, though I don't think he had an actual contract.

I swear the judges are on crack this week. They praised the worst ones & criticize Jason & David A.

I do agree that David Cook did a good job tonight, but I SO don't agree that he could win it all.

And what is UP with the mini concert production they gave to Michael Johns?? The camera goes up to the crew doing the "Champions" clap, the lights blaring & pulsating, and the band louder than usual. It's like they're trying their butts off to get him to win. I don't get it at all.

I liked Michael John's number = showing the band was getting into the song = he did an excellent job == I didn't get the judges where David A. was concerned -Simon tells him to get out of the rut and sing more up beat songs - well he did -sure I didn't really know the song but I thought he did a good job - he was smiling and singing and looked like he had a good time singing it == and what's up with PAULA -what was she wearing and is she on something cause in her critiques she babbled on and on and didn't really say anything worth listening to =

Well, tonight for me certainly flipped the whole competition nearly upside down -- my usual personal top 3, with one exception, ended up in the middle or the bottom and people I usually place in the middle or bottom came out near the top. Strange night indeed.
Tonight's Rankings, for me:
1. David C -- the only one of my usual top 3 (the other 2 being Brooke and Carly) that actually came through. I think that was THE performance of the season so far; totally intense and absolutely incredible. I think they could start putting that on the radio tomorrow and it'd be a hit.
2. Syesha -- FINALLY the Syesha I've been waiting for since her terrific audition!! She was excellent; if she keeps it up, I think she could make the final.
3. Michael -- He's been irritating me from day one with his constant channelling of either Michael Hutchence or Jim Morrison, but finally he broke out of that mode and we got to actually see HIM. Excellent! Tho I agree with CzarinaAnya that the whole "production" was more than a bit MUCH.
4. Kristy -- Never thought I'd have her this high, but there ya go. I'm going to get past the fact that this was a pretty calculated choice (after all, I think she pretty much knows no way on earth she'll get sent home the night after she chooses THAT song), and just concentrate on the performance and vocal, both of which were terrific and by FAR her best effort. It was a little on the beauty pageant side, but that's OK.
5. David A -- I've never heard that song, either, but he did a great job, tho I agree with Simon it was a bit "theme park". I'd probably rank this a little higher, but I'm in general kind of creeped out by him -- No, it's not his fault he looks 12, but I find it unnerving when he opens his mouth and THAT voice comes out of it.
6. Chikizie -- Fine vocal. I just wish he would find some middle ground between Cheesy (like tonight was) and What The ****?? (like the last couple of weeks).
7. Brooke -- Nothing wrong with the vocal, but like the judges I didn't like the arrangement once the orchestra came in. The main problem I had with it is that, like I said last week, she radiates this upbeat sunny energy and that is in direct contrast to singing such a dark song. I didn't mind the "startover" at the beginning, tho; personally, I think there are a few more contestants on this show, both this season and in the past, who should have attempted a Take 2 early on.
8. Jason -- I liked that he sang part of it in Spanish, but beyond that, this was just very nice and nothing more.
9. Ramiele -- Another bad song choice, another dull performance.
10. Carly -- WOW. She was WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY the **** off. I have never seen anyone THIS good on this show, sing THIS badly. If she makes it another week after this, I'm gonna be shocked, given the backlash from her history and the fact she was in the bottom 3 last week.
