American Idol - Season 7

Well, this was certainly not one of AI’s more memorable nights, I think in part due to the theme. Now don’t get me wrong – I have been a huge fan of the incomparable Ms. Parton since I was 10 years old; however, out of all the AI Top 9’s over the years, I think this particular group was for the most part probably the one least suited for her music.

My rankings:

1. Syesha – Dolly hit it on the head when she said that Syesha hit the best balance between her understated original and Whitney Houston’s [IMHO TOTALLY OVERDONE, TOTALLY OVERBLOWN] remake. It was a predictable choice for her, but she was excellent!! She is really starting to hit her stride. However – WHAT is WITH the HAIR???

2. Carly – Carly’s back, baby!! As a general rule, I take issue with singers who take mid-paced or fast songs and slow them down to "Jazz Lounge" speed, but in this case it was good to see a more mellow side of Carly and I thought she did a really nice job.

3. David C – Another really good interpretation from the talented Mr. Cook. The problem I had with it was that I couldn’t understand the words a lot of the time; a little too much "mush mouth" in spots.

4. Jason – An excellent song choice, and a breakthrough of sorts for him, since he really let it rip in spots. Pretty darn good overall.

5. Ramiele – Good song choice, actually, and tho this was no barn-burner, I think it was by far the best she’s done and was actually rather charming. She did seem to be drowned out in spots by the backup singers.

6. Brooke – Out of all the songs Dolly has written, I can think of at least a dozen others that would have been a much better choice for her. I didn’t really feel she connected with this one, and connecting to her song is usually her strong suit. Overall – meh. She’s been kind of off the last couple of weeks for me; I hope she regains her form soon.

7. Kristy Lee – If anyone should have hit it out of the park tonight, it should have been her. So why on earth was this so dull??? I had a feeling she’d choose this song, but I expected it to be a lot better. Her main flaw seems to be that she doesn’t know how to ARRANGE anything; she seems to suck most of the life out of just about everything she sings.

8. David A – To me, EVERY SINGLE SONG that he chooses to sing SOUNDS EXACTLY ALIKE. Yeah, he’s got a voice, but I flat out just don’t like his "style", if you care to call it that. Broadway star? Absolutely. Pop singer? Absolutely NOT. I found this boring and sappy in addition to the fact that I do not really buying HIM singing about "back home in the Smokies".

9. Michael – I am so tired of listening to him channel other people; I thought after last week maybe we could actually hear HIM sing, as opposed to imitating other people – now this week we’re back to THAT again; I think this time he was trying to do Joe Cocker. Beyond that, he oversang the song and totally butchered one of my favorite Dolly Parton songs; WORST PERFORMANCE OF THE SEASON BY ANYONE, IMHO. Oh, it was DEFINITELY "all wrong" – and NO "all right" about it….. [Obviously I’m in a minority here, but that wouldn’t be the first time.]

I was out with my family celebrating my grandpa's 82nd bday (yes he was born on April Fool's day  ) so I missed it...

good to hear Jason did well

I was just thinking later last night that in a way it's too bad Amanda didn't make it this far; I'm sure HER take on a Dolly Parton song would have been most interesting.....:confused::unsure:

Okay, here's my take:
First I'm going to say that the 3 songs I knew well of Dolly's I am VERY BIASED that only she, and in the case of Jolene, Olivia Newton-John, can sing them the way they are supposed to be sung, so it was hard for me to give an unbiased assessment of the contestants singing those 3 songs(Jolene, Here You Come Again and I Will Always Love You).

Brooke--Jolene--I think this was her weakest performance yet, but I still wouldn't put her in the bottom 3.

David Cook--Little Sparrow--okay, usually when it's a song I don't know I most often can't get into it...David got me into this song and I think it was the best performance of the night.

Ramiele--Do I Ever Cross Your Mind--I keep coming back to one word for her BORING.

Jason--Travelin' Through--I enjoyed this song that I didn't know. I thought Jason sang it well.

Carly--Here You Come Again--didn't thrill me as she usually does. I am a big fan of hers but this week just didn't cut it,IMHO.

David A--Smokey Mountain Memories--yes, he has a lovely voice, but...that type of voice and singing isn't my cup of tea. I'm tired of him...but that's my personal opinion, I know he won't go anywhere for awhile.

Kristy Lee--Coat of Many Colors--her 2nd best performance of the whole competition--she "stepped it up" more last week than this week, but two strong weeks for her and she'll probably stay again this week. Country is definitely her niche.

Syesha--I Will always Love You--UGH...I didn't want anyone to do this song. This song should ONLY be song by Dolly IMHO. Although syesha has a nice voice, she is also boring and I cannot get into her. I guess she, as well as Ramiele, don't have the "it" factor.

Michael Johns--It's All Wrong but It's Alright--I couldn't get into it. Didn't know the song and this is one week that Michael didn't pull me in to his performance.

My bottom 3 would be:

Ramiele
Syesha
Michael

I HOPE Ramiele goes home, or Syesha...I know Michael won't because I think I might be one of the few people on the planet that didn't get into his performance last night.

I'm happy to find someone else who feels the same as me. I do not like Whitney's version at all.

7. Kristy Lee – If anyone should have hit it out of the park tonight, it should have been her. So why on earth was this so dull??? It's not that she doesn't have a good voice..She does.. I think it's because she doesn't know how to relate to an audience. She just doesn't show any emotion in her face when she sings.. She could be singing to a brick wall for all we know..LOL

David Cook was rushed to the hospital after last night's performance because of heart palpitations

he was released, but he has very high blood pressure. According to TMZ (which I take with less than a grain of salt), David's brother (cousin? can't remember) is battling cancer and it is not going well and he had a setback and they think that is what caused last night's hospitlization of the singer.

That's terrible news about David and especially his ill relative. Can't be easy for him to be where he is while someone he cares about is so ill.

David A--Smokey Mountain Memories--yes, he has a lovely voice, but...that type of voice and singing isn't my cup of tea. I'm tired of him...but that's my personal opinion, I know he won't go anywhere for awhile.

I am SO glad someone else agrees with me regarding David A and Michael; the way people are carrying on about these two, I'm starting to feel like I'm on an entirely different planet because I can do without either one of them.

However, I might still be on another planet regarding Syesha; I think she's been terrific the last couple of weeks, finally on the level of her fantastic audition, and I like her a lot, tho I wish she'd slap the next stylist who comes near her with a straightening comb....

I am actually finding this season so boring. Usually by now I have a favorite and can't wait to see every episode!! Now....I don't have a favorite, don't really feel like watching (which I didn't last night...but did tape and watched later...although I did fast forward through most of it). I could really care less who wins since I wouldn't buy their album anyway!! When they said before the season started that this was the most talented season yet.....well either I am watching a different American Idol or they were lying.

Can't stand the excessive pimping and drooling over Archuleta, Michael Johns, or Carly, for that matter.

I think Syesha has been seriously underrated and overjudged. She's been a huge standout for me three weeks in a row.

I really like the understated, gentle talents of Brooke and Jason. And I sure as heck would buy a Jason Castro CD long before one of the "favored ones".

Liking David C more and more, although I really liked him from the beginning as well. Thought he was great this week.

I think singing wise this is the strongest top 10... no one is really horrible (unlike past seasons when one or two definitely got in and stayed for reasons other than vocal abilities)

that being said I find this season very dull as well

as of right now the only people I might get their debut album would be Jason and Brooke...

I only have Kelly, Clay, Carrie, and Taylor's CDs right now as it is... oh and Bo Bice's (but my aunt got it for me and I don't really know why, I liked him on the show but his genre is not my cup of tea)

Well, the only "Idol" CD I've purchased so far is Elliot's, so I guess I'm not the kind of purchaser they're going after.....

I have Kelly, Clay, and Carrie's CD. I'll probably buy Brooke's if she does what suits her style.

I won't spoil the results of tonights show yet as I'm sure some people haven't seen it yet......I actually only agreed with one of the bottom three this week.

As for purchasing CD's...I've only purchased two...Clay's and Chris Daughtry's. I hardly ever play Clay's. I liked him on the show, I've since lost fondness for him.
I didn't know who Kelly Clarkson was because I didn't know anything about the first AI...but I do like her music and would like to get a "greatest hits" CD of hers sometime. I like Carrie's single but I don't know the correct title of it.

I would maybe buy, from this season, a CD of Jason's, Brooke's, Carly's, and David C's.

I am glad that Ramiele has been eliminated finally.
I never realised just HOW tiny she is until she was standing next to Brooke and Kristy Lee!

I like Carrie's single but I don't know the correct title of it.

which one?

the first one was "Jesus Take the Wheel" (well after her AI single)

then came "Wasted," "Don't Forget to Remember Me" (makes me cry) and "Before He Cheats" which all were on her first album

then from her second she had "Some Hearts" and "All American Girl" (so far these are the singles I know of)

and then from Disney she has "Ever Ever After" which is from Enchanted. The music video is cool because for part of it Carrie is an animation in the kingdom of Andelasia.

I have all of Clay's recordings & still love his voice. I, also, have John Stevens CD mainly because he sings all the old favorites that I like & I have the Season 4 CD. My daughter downloaded Kurt Nilsen's songs for me so I have him, too. In case you've forgotten he beat out Kelly Clarkson for the title of "World Idol". Of the current competitors I will buy Jason's CD & possibly David Cook's.

I was so proud of Jason & David A. I love the emotions that come through in their vocals.

I wish smarmy Johns would leave, already.
