— How is this season different for you — mentally and physically?
— If I look back at the last two seasons, they were transitional and quite challenging for me. I switched to a new coaching staff and moved to a different city. It was pretty tough. Maybe I didn’t fully realize it at the time, but now I understand that it wasn’t easy.
It took time to get used to everything: the workload, the new environment, the coaches and the rink, and the city. Now I’ve gotten used to it and realize that this season I’m getting into shape, not the other way around—I’m not declining with age.
— People often say that it takes exactly two years to adapt.
— That’s why I saw this season’s Russian Championship as a defining moment for myself. I made the switch after the championship, and for me, it was a sort of turning point—whether I’d made the right move or not.
— And now can you say that with confidence?
— In any case, I didn’t make the move for nothing. It was a moment of realization.
— That something had to change.
— Yes, of course. And as the Russian Championship showed, something really did change—for the better.
— Let’s get back to the coaching team. What did Eteri Tutberidze teach you?
— I’ll speak in general terms. She gives you confidence. You’re training under such a great coach who has produced so many champions, including Olympic champions. And she tells you: “You can do it, you can do it.”
— What was the most valuable advice she gave you?
— A lot of psychological and technical points. For example, she draws my attention to things I didn’t notice before. I realized I wasn’t tucking my legs before a jump. Before, I only thought about spinning, spinning. I didn’t even think about things like that.
— Has your mental attitude changed too?
— I think so. Although I can’t really judge myself from the outside. But many people say I’ve changed a lot over these past two years.
