Andrei Mozalev

Mozalev presented an intriguing short for the new season
Tamara Moskvina held her traditional master class at the Ice Palace of the Igora Resort. Besides her star pupils - Anastasia Mishina/Alexander Galliamov and Yasmina Kadyrova/Valeriy Kolesov - the athletes of Kirill Davydenko's group - Andrey Mozalev, Ksenia Gushchina, Ivan Ramsenkov and Dmitry Shelkovnikov - took to the ice. Some of them dared to break the rules of off-season secrets and showed programs for the new season.

Mozalev and Apocalyptica
Andrey presented here a new short program. For the second year in a row the athlete surprises with his choice of music: last season Mozalev skated to Led Zeppelin, this time he chose the Finnish band Apocalyptica. Agreed, cello metal is quite a bold decision. However, the risk is justified: the program is built on danceability, choreography, plasticity, which have always been the strong points of this skater. The program clearly has a deep meaning in the spirit of Andrei Mozalev, and we are likely to learn about it at the control rolls. The philosophy can already be felt. It is worth noting how diligently and accurately the skater performed each step, each arm swing and head turn. Even for a small audience in the off-season, this athlete works at 120 percent of his abilities.

Moskvina's improvised Stand Up

Andrei Mozalev completes the rolling, having failed all the jump elements. Tamara Nikolayevna notes that the problem is not in the jump, but in the exit. Moskvina puts Andrei in the exit position, drives up to the front and begins to press hard on his shoulders. After several such repetitions, Mozalev goes into a quadruple salchow and performs it cleanly. Tamara Nikolayevna takes Andrei's hand, strokes his head with it and says: "Now that's a good coach".

Aleksandrina Degtyareva: "Andrei and I have been training together since childhood, but we don't have a common photo. Now there is one."

Cool Russian figure skater continues to break the patterns: in the new season he will skate to metal on cellos

Andrei Mozalev surprises again.

There are still two months before the start of the figure skating season, but athletes are already delighting fans with new programs and sharing announcements. Traditionally, Tamara Moskvina's master class is held at the Igora resort, where you can see not only the great coach, but also some figure skaters from St. Petersburg. Their performances are only a small part of the event, but even here there are premieres.

So, Andrei Mozalev presented a short program, staged for the new season. The singles player chose the composition "Romance" by Apocalyptica. This sportsman is famous for his unusual decisions in terms of choreography and image interpretation. Even classical music he can present in a special way and noticeably differ from his rivals. It's all about unusual plasticity, which is sometimes diluted with broken and angular movements. This seems to be a simple feature in the image of the skater, but Mozalev knows how to present it in such a way that this dissonance looks fresh and unpretentious.

Even with such data, the athlete tries to choose different images and try new styles. For example, last season Andrei was remembered for his short program to the music of rock band Led Zeppelin. He was able to convey the mood in a technically intense performance and didn't destroy the complex rhythmic composition of the songs.

Apocalyptica's music is built on a combination of classical and "heavy" music (cello metal is one of the traditional genres in which Finnish musicians develop). This contrast suits Mozalev very well - he is plastic, his skating is suitable for melodic programs, at the same time the athlete can easily cope with aggressive and powerful beats, which is so characteristic of rock. We should not forget about another feature of this skater - futuristic and unusual productions. He does not like to choose a simple image or clearly follow the music - everywhere there is his own, sometimes strange, story.

Without an explanation of the libretto from Andrei himself, it's hard to reliably understand what he's rolling about, because the ideas are always confusing and the subject matter is not readable after the first viewing. Mozalev's new program has everything for which he is loved - long and beautiful skating, slightly broken and in some places complex choreography, and a step track worked out to the last detail.
At the moment we can see that it still needs to be finalized, jumps and spins the skater rather sketched out, we can see that it is still difficult for him to gain the necessary speed while performing the choreography.

The song "Romance" is melodic, even lyrical in some places, but at the same time it can be referred to the group of "epic" compositions. Powerful development of the plot, change of moods - the perfect support for such an extraordinary skater.

There are no primary sources that will tell about the meaning of the song itself, so Mozalev and his choreographer can easily create it themselves.

It is possible to realize that there is a plot by two reference points - the initial and final positions. Closed and thrashing broken movements in the beginning three minutes into the program turn into smooth, subtle and open postures in the finale. Even without them, one can see how Mozalev's lyrical hero transforms during the program, how sharpness is replaced by blurriness. Now the audience can not accurately count the idea and idea of the skater, so the program and its viewing even in such an incomplete version becomes even more interesting.

Intriguing!

While this is a demo, let's just say the program will be finalized, but I already like what they are getting.
The choreo looks dope. I am really interested to see it in final version, bug i was worried that he wasn’t making jumps. However, it is new and hugely demanding choreo that is showing his growth as skater. Let's see how he does in September. Great choice of music!

Gosh, Moskvina pointing out his shoelaces was precious.

Don`t worry about jumping. It's summer, low season, athletes aren't ready to perform their programs at a high level. They should get ready by mid-autumn and shine in December.

The choice of music made me happy (and most of the fans too). The program will be beautiful. I look forward to performing in costume and "in character". The libretto already exists, but it will be shared a little later, closer to the season.

Gosh, Moskvina pointing out his shoelaces was precious.

Andrei sometimes does things like a child, for example, in this case. I can say that he almost didn't sleep for two days before this master class, he had a very tight schedule. He could have just missed that moment and tied his shoelaces in simplest manner as he thought it would be quicker

You're 8 y.o., you've been skating for a while and you're happy when you get to take pictures with famous skaters:

Time passes quickly, you become an adult champion and little skaters take photos with you 🥹
