Andrei Mozalev

I got a little distracted by other things and didn't finish my rankings until the adult test skate. But it's even good, as I saw new programs and can compare with the very best that was done in the last staff. Let's discuss the three best programs conscious for Andrei by the trio Davydenko-Lunin-Koscheev, and I will of course compare their results with the first results of the duo Gleichengauz and Tutberidze.
Okay, here we go.

🥉
2020-2021 SP “That Enigma Program”

Music: Enigma - Sadeness (Part II)
Image: Marquis de Sade, nothing more, nothing less.

This was the first adult season for seventeen y.o. Andrei. Literally this program was the first thing he performed at open rentals, his first public performance. And damn it, it became an event. It was so unexpected to see how Andrei had grown professionally in just a couple months. And we remember that this was a pandemic season, when preparations for the season were crunched due to space constraints. Under such conditions, Andrei managed to make a qualitative leap, and his team managed to prepare him for it.
One of the conditions for the rapid transformation were the programs. Let's start with the short program, which made a little less impression, but still remains the favorite program of many spectators.

What was special about it? Well, first of all, it was unexpected classical music in electronic processing (“Sadeness” starts with the famous “Toccata & Fugue for Organ in D Minor” by Sebastian Bach), which sounded very cool on the ice. Choreography with an emphasis on classical ballet choreography (Andrei even performed a version of the fouetté, bouncing). Successfully accented movements. Beautiful costume (one of Andrei's best costumes). Finally, the very fact that such a young athlete skates something so sensual (Marquis de Sade!) was shocking and eye-catching. All this somehow coincided so well that the program made a magical impression and captivated. Even with constant mistakes (Andrei showed only 2 error-free skate of this program during the season).

Andrei loved this program very much. He even planned to keep it for the 2021-2022 Olympic season and performed it three times: at the test skates, at the competition in Minsk and at the Denis Ten Memorial. But then he realized he couldn't hear that music anymore, and his team set him a new short program.
He also tried to keep it as a demonstration number and performed it at the Golden Spin of Zagreb. But that idea too was eventually abandoned.

However, it is one of Andrei's three programs that was a head and shoulders above the others, and it gets a well-deserved bronze medal. Sade, I'm still following you!

That program was very good, but Andrei had better programs. Which ones? I'll tell you next time.

We continue our rating of programs prepared for Andrei by the trio Davydenko-Lunin-Koscheev. And today we have almost the best program of this team.

🥈
2020-2021 season FS “Man with harmonica” (aka “Psycho”)
Music: "The Man With the Harmonica" (from Once Upon a Time in the West) by Ennio Morricone; performed by Apollo 440
Image: crazy man

If Andrei's short program in his first adult season impressed fans and critics alike, his free skating program.... It was something out of the ordinary. This program is still a cult program for many fans, even though 4 seasons have passed.

Everything came together here: the stunning lingering music of Enio Morricone, the absolutely unusual modern choreography, and Andrei's heartfelt skating. Finally, this is the case when the program appeared at a time when it was badly needed. If you remember how we felt in 2020, you'll agree that we all lost our minds a bit for a while. “All people went a little crazy for the duration of the pandemic,” Andrei said in an interview, and he showed it on the ice, he played the crazy character perfectly.
I think this program went into the world's top programs about insanity. Unfortunately, that year Russian athletes competed exclusively at home competitions, well no one knew that soon it will only be like that, hehehe.

The short and free skating programs of the 2020-2021 season are the best set of programs for Andrei. So far in 3 seasons it has not been possible to surpass this result.

In the 2020-2021 season, team took such a high bar that they themselves did not manage to repeat their own achievements again. But one time they did manage to jump over the top again. That's if you don't count Averbukh and Maslennikova's Red Hand, which I consider to be Andrei's best program.

You've probably already guessed it, but let's keep the intrigue alive for a while. See you tomorrow and we'll name the winner!

Well, it's time to name my favorite, the program that I consider the best work of the Davydenko team for Andrei. And the answer seems obvious.

🥇
2021-2022 SP “Heart Cry”
Music: "Heart cry" by Drehz.
Image: Melancholic with a broken heart.

I've talked about this program before and don't want to repeat myself. A short history of the program for those who don't know. Initially it was a small show number with free choreography, which Andrei presented at the Denis Ten Memorial. Everyone liked this show number.

At that time Andrei was just bored with his last year's short program (my bronze medalist), and the team decided to turn the show number into a short program. They kept only the music, completely redid all the choreography and incorporated the jumps. And all this a couple months before the Olympics.

This program was perfectly performed at the European Championships in Tallinn. Andrei showed it at the Olympic Games, though not so successfully. And after two years in a row he performed this program, again changed into an exhibition number, on Eteri Tutberidze's show.

I think that in this case all the conditions coincided perfectly. Beautiful meditative music that suited Andrei's cold introverted presentation. Masterfully honed choreography, where every movement, every gesture is in its place and coincides with the musical accent. Incredible beauty of gliding, bringing aesthetic pleasure. In general, it was as close to the ideal as possible. It is not by chance that Eteri Tutberidze invited Andrei to the show with this program two years in a row.

Since we have already seen Andrei's new programs, we can speculate a little about what has changed in him. Maybe my opinion will be unpopular, but I think that the transfer has benefited Andrei. I noticed more freedom of movement, more corpus work, beautiful hands, a lot of complex choreography. They are trying to “pack” Andrei, to present to the judges, so that he started to get high scores for the second grade. At the same time, the programs have become slower and more relaxed, Andrei can save energy, focusing on jumps. The new team definitely looked at his entire portfolio, starting from juniors, and chose the most winning choreographic elements: inabauer, spread eagle, spirals - most of the elements are rather typical for women's figure skating and distinguish Andrei from the mainstream Russian skaters. Perhaps it looks a bit rambling so far, but let's keep in mind that this is a transitional period, the first season in the new staff. We'll be watching to see how Andrei unfolds this season.

Daniil Gleichengauz about Andrei Mozalev:

"There are, roughly speaking, two ways of performing the program: either you take the extreme difficulty or perfect skating. But if you don't perform quality elements in an easy set, if you also do butterflies - of course, you won't be able to compete for the first places.

- Andrei Mozalev, judging by his mood, is following the path of clean programs.
- Yes, that's why we were a bit upset with his skating, especially his free skating . He skates very beautifully, and when this program goes from element to element without failures, everything adds up to a beautiful picture. But when Mark Kondratyuk comes and jumps quadruple lutz, quadruple flip, and we go to the jumps triple lutz, triple flip and do double jumps instead - this, of course, raises questions. I think it's bad, it shouldn't happen if you want to qualify for something.
- How did Andrei come to you? He said that at the first trainings he was shaking, he was very nervous.
- To be honest, I don't remember how he got here. I think he contacted Eteri Georgievna, I will not say how exactly he came here. I was so caught up that I saw him on the ice (smiles).
Yes, he was a bit stiff at first. We joke a lot on the ice, at first he didn't get into humor, he didn't understand if it was okay to laugh, how to behave. But now, as I think, he is absolutely used to everything, he communicates well with the guys. There are no problems in this regard, we are practicing. The main thing now is to improve the elements, not to tear them down, at least in such quantities.

- In his case there is no talk about other foursomes?
- Yes, we had such a plan. If you look, last year he did a salchow, tulup and axel in the short program. But how many times did he do it during the whole season? Maybe one, maybe none. We decided that we will make the first element a quadruple tulup, which he performs to good pluses, then we will have a trixel from an interesting and difficult approach, which should also get a good GOE. And in the second half we go from the inabauer to the 3-3 cascade, which just has to be executed well. All together with the fourth levels, good st.sq and presentation - we should get a clean program with good grades.
In free skating we go to the salchow, two tulups, two axels, we won't put any more quadruplets in there. If he does it well, he can get good scores, but if he doesn't do it well, it will be hard to qualify for anything.
- What does he need to add to be successful?
- We can go into some points of technique, jump heights, etc. for a long time here. These are working points that we are working on and hope to show results. The main thing is that we understand what we want from him, the question is whether we can do it together or not."
