Andrew Torgashev

Andrew himself, along with others, have referred to him as the "pizza king". What am I missing? What does that refer to?

Andrew gave an interview last year where he claimed he was eating a pizza a day for a month. At first I thought it was a joke, but evidently not. Athletes have bizarre diet fads sometimes.

Since then, it has been somewhat of a meme to call Andrew the pizza king. I think I read that others in the skating community have picked up on it (I say think I read because it may have been on Ashley and Adam's podcast, which for me is just completely unlistenable and unfunny, so I did not hear it myself.).

So he is the pizza king 🍕

In 2023 in a short video interview for Golden Skate, he said that pizza is his favorite food and he had been eating pizza for more then fifty days straight once. Then Ashley and Adam named him Pizza King on their podcast. Actually, I'm not sure about the second fact. I think, I've read it on another site. But Pizza King sounds cute.

I know some people aren't quite believing what they're seeing yet. BUT - I have followed Andrew since someone (hi El!) turned me on to him and I have never seen him skate with such innate confidence and assuredness. He's enjoying himself and feeling the music and just being free and happy. Will he still make mistakes? Of course - they ALL do. But this is truly a different skater out there now. Here's hoping he makes a great showing at Worlds.

"It's me. It have been always me"

After NHK Trophy, he responded with these words on his Instagram stories to Jackie Wong's "Who is this Torgie?"

It's true. It have been always Andrew.
He just was in process of solving his problems and dealing with his limits.

I became a fan of Andrew in 2018. Sometimes it was painful to watch some his failures and disappointments. But he always was a great skater with a huge potential. And I've never doubted he is smart and thoughtful to find a way to get perfect.

Of course no one is immune from future mistakes. No one can be perfect all the time.
I've got my fingers crossed for his optimal preparation to Worlds and optimal skates there.
Yes, "calm, confident, relaxed" is my favorite kind of Andrew. Hope to see him like this again.

Thanks for the explanation!

Does anyone know why Andrew withdrew from Four Continents? I'm hoping it's not because of injury but just because he wants to concentrate on Worlds or something similar.

I don't think anyone publicly knows. We just have to wait and see if he's alright to perform for Worlds next month. Pray that he's fine and just wanted to focus on training for Worlds and not to get bogged down by travel and possible injury for 4CC. It does make sense to skip it!

This was posted on January 28th. No mention of 4CC, either competing or withdrawing. I think his withdrawal was evident the next day. So, either it's a planned withdrawal and he didn't want to include it when talking about Nationals, or an injury happened soon after Nationals. I have to say, he didn't seem injured at Nationals at all. Given that he withdrew so soon after Nationals, I'm hoping it was planned, a recently made plan to save his mind and body. We won't know for sure until closer to Worlds though.

Higher ranked skaters in Raf's camp have tended to skip 4CC: Nathan and Ashley W. come to mind.

I'm not a huge fan of skipping it, but I'm not a skater. :). Maybe it's a sign of confidence that Andrew doesn't think he needs it, although world ranking points are a help.

Andrew has traditionally not disclosed injuries, in the two years he was battling them, all I ever saw on his SM was a jeep on the beach. I got tired of that jeep:laugh:

It's a lot to peak for 4CCs and then again for World's. But with Max out, that leaves Camden and whoever they can get to go. Jimmy and Tomoki? It may not be the best time to do it for Andrew. The higher level Japanese skaters are sitting it out as well, opting to prepare for World's instead. The timing of 4CCs is just bad. It's usually in January, right on top of US Nats, which is bad also.

Happy posts are coming from me, but first, less happy things.

Andrew put Ilia's post with the broadcasting graphic for Legacy on Ice in his own IG stories yesterday. I have no idea if that means he will skate at it. He was not in the original list, but the last line in that list says, "And many more to be announced." It would be nice if he is performing, but we'll have to see. It's live on Peacock on March 2nd at 3:00pm Eastern, then on regular NBC on March 30th at 1:00pm Eastern.

The other thing in Andrew's IG stories now is another person's old post remembering the Parkland 17. The school shooting happened 7 years ago today (Feb. 14, 2018). For those who don't know, Andrew's house in Florida was across the street from the high school, and if he hadn't been in the process of moving to Colorado Springs, 16-year-old Andrew would have been in the school during the shooting. Instead, he was at home and saw the police, EMTs and SWAT rush to the high school while a helicopter circled overhead. Three weeks after moving, Andrew participated in a march in Colorado Springs to honor the 17 victims and protest school gun violence. (I went back in this thread and found an article about it; Andrew is talked about and quoted).

I didn't know the date of the school shooting until today. Wow.

As a fan of Andrew and his skating, I am so grateful for what he showed us at Nationals. I'm grateful that I could experience it through technology. This year, I actually enjoyed both commentaries on his free skate. I'm still at a loss for words to describe how amazing both programs were. It wasn't only that they were clean, without mistakes. It was the matter-of-fact way they were delivered. His expression after both programs said, "I'm happy, but I expected to do a clean program." And yet, the choreography had all of the "Andrew passion" we love him for. In fact, everything seemed more crisp because he was jumping so confidently. I have never seen him jump so well in my life. His jumps are now some of my favorites to watch; so straight, so much height, such good air position, such flow on the landing edges. He maintains the flow between his 3A and 2A, and his euler actually looks pretty. In 2023 it seemed like he was surprised to land everything in the free skate, in 2024 it was a valiant struggle due to injury, and in 2025 he matter-of-factly landed everything. What a great progression. Incredible. His success rate on 4Ts this season is much higher than I would have predicted before the season started.

It's challenging to pick out favorite moments in this particular outing because everything flowed so seamlessly. But, I'll have to go with the head nod to the judges after the choreo sequence. ;) The choreo sequence and last spin were especially exhilerating for me here, knowing he had done a clean free skate, with two quads no less.

I loved the interactions between Andrew and Brandon. Brandon brings out a joy in Andrew that I haven't noticed before. (Granted, Andrew is also skating better than he ever has, so that helps). They've been friends for a long time and it shows. Brandon seems so amazed watching Andrew skate and jump. Andrew got off the ice and Brandon said, "Dude, do you realize what you just did?" To which Andrew said, "Oh yeah, [bleep] crushed it."

I'm happy that Andrew skated so well, won the silver medal and is going to Worlds, but it definitely hits a bit differently with the plane crash and the loss of Dick Button. That terrible week in figure skating reminded me that every performance we get to witness from our favorite skaters is a gift, not to be taken lightly. Even the ones where they don't land their jumps. For me, the tragedy put "landing your jumps" into perspective yet again. Yes, jumps matter for the competition, scores and placements, but just watching someone glide and move and do spins and footwork is a miraculous gift. The gift is made even sweeter when a skater like Andrew lands his jumps, but even being able to skate is incredible. Things can change so quickly, so let's savor this right now.

I hope Andrew is doing okay. I can't imagine listening to "L'Enfer" every day, given the recent tragedy. Same with Alisa and Misha listening to "Je Suis Malade." But that's just me wondering, as a very unimportant outsider.

My next post here will have all the Andrew videos from Nationals, except the gala, which has not been shown. It will be fun to relive Andrew's 2025 Nationals with you all!!! :ghug:

In addition to the Peacock videos of his SP and LP, I have the Medal Ceremony, as well as his LP from NBC (yes, you read that right). Because his LP went so well, I wanted to know what the NBC threesome said, so I listened/watched as soon as I could on the Peacock website. I loved it for the most part (shocking, I know). The next day it was still on the Peacock website so I thought, "Why not grab it too?" One of the other reasons to share the videos is to avoid the work of transcribing all of the glowing compliments Andrew got from all five commentators. ;) Also, there was a very quick report by Andrea Joyce on NBC about Andrew's plan for success, notably the amount of runthroughs he did to prepare for Nationals. Our boy is growing up and taking charge! No wonder he didn't seem surprised by his clean programs.

The Peacock commentators were Ashley Wagner and Ben Agosto, and the NBC commentators were Terry Gannon, Tara Lipinski, and Johnny Weir.

Soak it all in, fellow Andrew fans! It is glorious! And then, let's talk about our favorite program moments and favorite bits of commentary. ENJOY!!!!!

Since I brought up the 2018 Florida school shooting yesterday, I want to share some more context, from Andrew himself. He has an official website (infrequently updated now), and he used to write journal entries there. (The most recent was in January 2021, saying he needed to withdraw from 2021 Nationals because he was still injured). He wrote an entry in June 2018 announcing big changes and his program music for 2018/2019. He wrote:

"I took on the role of choreographer this season. I worked with Evgeni Platov and Scott Brown to choreograph my short program, which is 'Open Arms' by Journey. I have a bit of story for my short program. Evgeni and I finished the choreography for the program the day of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas School shooting in Parkland, Florida. Since the school is right across the street from where I live in Florida and the fact that I am friends with many of the students at that school, I have decided to dedicate the program to the victims of the school shooting. A lot of my friends were in the school during the shooting. Luckily, they are all okay, but I wanted to do this program as tribute to the victims and to show that tragic events like these damage communities, but also cause them to come together and become stronger."

Here is that short program. I chose JGP Kaunas. He did not jump well that season, so he never skated the program cleanly, but it's so beautiful! He skated this program with so much youthful exuberance. I can feel his heart in every moment. I love the choreography and delivery so much!!! I also love Ted's comments after the program, such as, "This young man has it all, and I want to be around when it all comes together." I hope Ted is aware of how well Andrew just skated at Nationals. It all came together there!

Back to celebrating Nationals... :hap10:
