I'm glad that Andrew redeemed himself in the FS. He lost almost 5 points for messing up the second 4T, so there is certainly room for improvement. Maybe he was also nervous about debuting the short here.

I realize that his Nationals scores were inflated, but his PB is only seventh in the Nebelhorn group. He should be able to get 250+ with clean skates, but he will likely need to be in the 260 range to be competitive at most events.
 
Tidbits from Golden West (via Instagram).

Andrew's Short Program is "Maybe I Maybe You" by Scorpions. I really like the message of the lyrics. Click the white arrow or swipe to see his 3A and his StSq. He got +0.4 in GOE on the 3A, and no matter how many times I watch, I can't decide if he stepped out or if it was choreographed that way. 🤔 He seems too far back on the landing. The StSq is fire, as usual. Andrew must really love doing passionate knee slides.


Part of the Free Skate (last jump to the end). Here, the tech panel gave him a 3F, but honestly to me it looks like a Lutz takeoff. :shrug: Is it just me? :laugh:


It looks like neither costume is ready yet, but that's okay for now.

He got Level 4s on all spins in both programs except the FS Combo Spin, and Level 4 on both StSq. If he lands the jumps, I think he's going to be in the mix again. (Sometimes some spins have gotten level 3, so it's significant to see this many Level 4s, especially so early).

Andrew's short looks very promising! I had assumed that he would pick something classical to contrast with the LP, but he is better off with what he likes and finds inspiring. He seems to have found his niche in terms of both style and music choices.

The 3A in the short was maybe a little off balance. The double flip (?) with arms overhead was pretty. It also looked like a lutz takeoff to me in the long. Nice about Level 4s on the spins. Everyone is starting with a clean slate this season, so slow and steady might be okay for now. :)
 
Quick post to wish Andrew a good, clean SP today (it is early Thursday morning in Germany right now). I paid for the livestream (I hope that works out well for me, haha). I wanted to make sure to see both programs since both are new. I will report as I can. I'm not going to bother with figuring out how to download or screen record from the livestream website, so we'll have to rely on others for rewatching/sharing. (I can download from YouTube if someone else puts it on there first and I manage to grab it before it disappears).

Andrew could be anywhere from the podium to 9th or 10th. I hope Andrew won't men too much, and of course we don't know how much the other men will men. ;) :cheer:

Andrew was amazing today!!! I think there is room for more passion in this program, but well done, especially since Golden West was so rough. I love the costume; it looks even better in closeup stills. I love how the rock part of the song doesn't start until the StSq. My biggest pet peeve with rock music is when it's so screamy that I can't understand the lyrics. This way the lyrics flow nicely and you understand the song before Andrew hits blast on the StSq, which is perfectly placed. A slight issue on the 3A again, and the end of the combo wasn't perfect but he got it landed. His 4T was gorgeous and got +3 from 6 of 7 judges (+2 from the other). He got Level 4 on his spins, although the combo spin got a V, and Level 3 on the StSq. His score was 87.35, which is an ISU PB. The other thing that stood out immediately was his speed and flow, especially this early in the season. No dead moments in the program whatsoever. If he keeps this up, I might end up enjoying it more than L'Enfer. The non-depressing lyrics help a lot towards that possibility. :laugh:

May he do a good Free Skate that he's happy with (and the podium would be nice too). 🤞

I was curious to see the entire short program, and it went better than expected. Andrew didn't look overly nervous and it did flow well. It may have been one of his better 4Ts and he fought for the landings of the other jumps, which hasn't always happened before.

Good costume choice, it is flattering without being overly busy or distracting. I also hope that the free goes well. A podium finish isn't essential but would be great for his confidence and position him well for the GP events.
 
Andrew was 4th in the Free and 2nd overall with a Competition Score of 239.54. I watched him live (turns out the trick was to disable ad blockers).

Free Skate Notes:
- He has a blingy costume and it looks so good.
- Falls on 1st quad and 2nd axel (meaning no axel combo), and hand down/stepout on 4T+3T. I think if he'd gone for a 2T he may have been successful on the quad combo.
- Otherwise he jumped well. He didn't let the mistakes pile up like at Worlds.
- Choreo sequence is SO amazing - no words!!!!!
- He seemed very focused on landing his jumps. The program has room to grow, but this is a good start. Much better than last year's Nebelhorn, and not only because of the medal.

I found a video of Andrew's free on the same YT channel. It wasn't bad considering some of the negative comments I had read about the music, mistakes, etc. He did have a hard fall on the 3T and it was far from perfect, but not too bad for September.

We wouldn't want him to peak too early and there is ample room to grow. He did seem to fight and will add more choreographic nuances over the season. I'm sure that it is a big plus to medal at any major international event: :jump3:

Yes, he fell on the jump on the LP and was hand down on the other, but the program itself is fascinating to watch, the step sequence and choreo are pure Andrew.

And I don't think I've ever seen so much bling on an Andrew costume. I love it. :love:
 
People in the Nebelhorn Men's FS thread are like, "Andrew was underwhelming. Andrew had a bad day." I'm like, "I've seen Andrew have much worse 'bad days' than this." :laugh: Was it a great day? No. Was it a good enough day to build from? Yes. We all perceive things differently. :shrug:

Yeah, I didn't feel like chiming in on that thread. He didn't deserve to win here, but his program is still much more interesting (at least to me) than many of the others even with the mistakes. I'm not sure that his scores were held up or that the placement was unfair. 🤔
 
FYI, both of Andrew’s Nebelhorn videos have been removed from YouTube. The full short program is tagged on his IG account if anyone wants to watch it again.

He seems pleased about his medal, which he should be. I’ll try to ignore the “still inconsistent, he doesn’t deserve to go to the Olympics” comments I have read. :rolleyes:
 
I will say this - Andrew's footwork was amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing. Not a fan of the music overall but the cuts used for the faster parts were sooo good. Andrew is always a heartbreak to me. I would never say a skater doesn't deserve to go to the Olympics if they earn that opportunity. I will say that Andrew can either be fantastic or woefully inconsistent. I'm always holding my breath when he skates and digging fingernails into whatever is handy. I just wish he could get it all together in 2 programs at the right time. He clearly has the skill and he's so smooth and graceful on the ice but those ding dang jumps get him almost every time.
 
To be fair, the jumps get a lot of skaters most of the time. ;) I find Andrew very watchable between the jumps and so I enjoy him even when the jumps don't work. His 2025 Worlds FS was my hardest watch of him ever, because it was obvious his heart was so not in it by the end. That didn't happen this time, though, which pleased me greatly.

Andrew's skate from the exhibition gala is on the same YT channel (Ulrich Salchow's Den), probably just for the day. It is to Sweet Caroline and shows his basic quality of skating apart from the jumps. He got the crowd involved and even smiled at the end! :)
 
I was in Oberstdorf. Before every competition they announced that filming is not allowed. That might be the reason why it's hard to get videos
