Andrew Torgashev

Andrews's mother is on the bottom half of the video. Pure elation. (You can just click X and it will bypass the login screen to watch the video.)

I never ever thought after this season that this would be possible. If Andrew can just do what he did at Nats, I will be over the moon.🎉 Who am I kidding, I am over the moon now.

Tears of joy after tears of sadness, (not relevant to this Fan Fest), last night. Quite the combination.

I had been hoping that Andrew could make the Olympic team, but it was looking like a real long shot. I am so happy for him and he is also assigned to Worlds!

It’s also special that he will go to Milano with Ilia and Max. They have so much in common and really seem to support each other. What an incredible experience it will be for them!

I know this is Andrew's thread, but...

USFS must still trust Jason to get us three spots for 2027 Worlds. He's assigned to 2026 Worlds in place of Max. Andrew's two Worlds haven't ended well and they're still sending him. Yay! I hope 2026 Worlds goes better for Andrew, if he competes. I hope people aren't mad that Max didn't get Worlds and Andrew did.

Celebration post coming later when I’ve watched Andrew's Free Skate!

Wait, you haven't seen his FS from Nats?

I'm so excited for Andrew! He, Ilia and Max are my dream team for the Olympics, as well. Andrew's FS was completely unhinged! I didn't think it would go well at all, but I'm glad he totally defied my expectations. Congrats to him! I hope somebody uploads a high quality version of his programs because this goes down in history.

I never knew it until a press conference, but they were all together on the 2020 Junior Worlds team.

And a Russian TV channel (?) did a story on them. (I haven't seen the presser so I don't know if they mentioned that). Interviewing all of them in Russian. :)

FWIW, sources here on GS said Max's Russian was the best, although none of them were fluent. I don't have time now to find the video, but it was posted in the forum.

I remember Max needing the most help with using the correct Russian words, so he probably wasn't the most fluent. It seemed it was either Ilia or Andrew who was the most fluent.

I saw that a while back, it was cute seeing them all speak Russian! Andrew really shined in the FS here. I think his score was a bit low maybe because he skated early in the final group.

I’ll be curious to hear the team event announcement today. It may be too much to expect that Andrew or Max could handle the FS portion. Ilia may want to skate both.

That is so interesting to me that USFS plans on such an early announcement for the team event. In years past, they didn't announce until much closer to the Games. In Sochi, not until after the SP:oops: but of course that was the first year of the team event.

In one way, I am speechless. In another way, I have so much to say I'm not sure what to type first.

This silver medal hit me, as a fan, differently than last year's silver medal. And it's more than Olympic qualification being on the line. Last season Andrew's skating went so well that Nationals was (sort of) expected. He still had to do it, but we knew he could, even though two 4Ts was brand new. This year, his season was not good at all in comparison (even with silver at Nebelhorn). France and NHK were so rough, particularly NHK, which was the last time we saw him skate. At last year's Nationals, he was 2nd after both programs, while at this Nationals, he did just enough to stay in it with his SP but he was in 5th and he needed to be perfect in the free skate and have others make mistakes. Plus, Scheherazade was a calmer, softer program, whereas this one is bold and in-your-face, with a show-stopping ending. Andrew's mental reset from NHK to Nationals SP and then to Nationals LP is super impressive. Going into this Nationals, I admit I kept my expectations of Andrew quite low. He surpassed them by a lot, obviously. And it also hit differently because Andrew burst into tears immediately after he finished, with the release of all that pressure. He knew he did everything he could and he seemed so relieved. He doesn't cry publicly very often.

As I wrote after the SP, his SP also was very nice. The 3A and 3F+3T were more steady than they've seemed all season, and with the 4T fall, he got up from it right away. And the free skate was probably the most perfect free skate he's done in any competition, both technically and artistically. I would have loved to see him do a quad-triple combo, but I'll take the quad-double. Describing the experience of watching that program unfold on my TV screen is impossible. I'll call it exhilarating, exciting, and thrilling, but words can't do it justice. And, given his season, the sheer unexpectedness added to my joy. It meant more, because my memory of the other performances is so fresh. I hoped he would skate well, but I didn't dare expect it to be that pristine. Wow. Just wow. Oh, and the blingy costume has returned (good choice, in my opinion).

And the DRAMA of it all. How Andrew had to wait for four more skaters to go, and then still not knowing which skaters would be selected for the Olympics. He won silver, but I was nervous still that he wouldn't be chosen for the Olympics (given last year's Worlds and this rough season). So to open this thread yesterday evening and read that he WAS chosen!!! That he and Max were BOTH chosen!!! Never did I foresee a scenario in which BOTH Max and Andrew would go to Milano, and yet that is exactly what happened!!! Speaking of Max, how fitting it felt that he and Andrew skated their LPs back-to-back. My heart was full of so many emptions at once. They are completely different skaters from each other, and yet I love them both SO MUCH. I am so happy that Max finally got into the Top 3, and the rest of Max's context goes without saying.

CONGRATULATIONS, ANDREW!!!!! YOU ARE AN OLYMPIAN!!!!!

@el henry, how are you doing? What a roller coaster, to be both exhilarated for Andrew and heartbroken for Jason, plus Max being Max. I am also a big Jason fan, and his free skate was a tough watch. And yet it allowed both Andrew and Max to become Olympians. along with Tomoki's low score. (Did Tomoki get a bunch of URs/downgrades? I haven't looked at free skate protocols.)

This turn of events is even more incredible when you remember that, four years ago, ANDREW COULD NOT SKATE AT ALL. He was off the ice for two full seasons (2020-2021 and 2021-2022) with that foot injury. In the SUMMER OF 2022, he got the correct diagnosis of his foot injury and started rehabing it. He started the 2022-2023 season to "see how it goes." He rebuilt his skating from scratch, qualified for Nationals, and shockingly made Worlds. He very nearly did not get his tech minimums for Worlds that year. And before that foot injury, he'd also had other big injuries.

Here's a great stat. He was 5th at 2020 Senior Nationals and then 8th at 2020 Junior Worlds. Since his comeback, he has finished 3rd, 5th, 2nd, and 2nd at Senior Nationals. Not to mention his international achievements. These are incredible results for a skater who thought his career might be over four years ago.

This old news fluff has been shared here before, but I'm doing it again. Eleven-year-old Andrew says he wants to make it to the 2018 Olympics. You made it to the Olympics, buddy. Just two cycles later than your original dream. And your mother was your coach back then, and she just handed you your Olympian's jacket.

I've written a lot in my last two posts. Thanks for reading them. I do have all the videos I could get from Peacock, but there's plenty of extracting still to do. The videos will be posted here when they're ready, but please be patient. ;) As I suspected, they gave us the NBC broadcast feeds except for certain portions which had Ben and Ashley commentating. But, click play anyway. It's worth it.
