a little pretentious, but a good text about Anna:
Если бы ее секрет был общедоступен, в нем не было бы никакой магии.

SHERBAKOVA IS THE CHAMPION OF THE UNIVERSE FOR VICTORIES IN THE FIGHT AGAINST FATE
I dreamed of writing this text for three and a half years. Yes, that's how I'll start.
Before my eyes - the championship of Russia-2018 in Saransk. Press conference on the results of women's single skating. Possibly one of the weirdest press conferences I've ever been to.
Imagine a situation. A choreography room with mirrors on the sides instead of a press area. Doubled school desks with a satin burgundy tablecloth with some kind of ridiculous floral embroidery - instead of a normal table with microphones. Three little girls sitting behind him with surprised eyes running around the room - instead of adult, honored women.
In front of them is a crowd of journalists, perhaps two or three hundred people. I stood in the middle of the room and tried not to miss a single look, not a single word.
The journalists did not really know what to talk about with them. Bronze medalist Alena Kostornaya recently turned 15 years old. Now, having since become a European champion, a multiple world record holder and one of the owners of the challenge title "Miss Perfection", she is watching the Olympic cauldron from Moscow, healing her second broken arm in three months. So much has already happened to her that if you take her story without edits and additions, you will get a ready-made script for a short film. You would watch it avidly. But then, at that press conference, she had absolutely nothing to say.
14-year-old silver medalist Sasha Trusova, perhaps, too. In the early days of her career, stories about dogs weren't annoying, and were actually pretty sweet. Except for them… Well, quads. Then they were still a new continent in the world of figure skating. The rest - no, emptiness.
Finally, 14-year-old Russian champion Anya Shcherbakova. Then another one-time champion. She is the only one whom we definitely did not expect to see at these desks, but for whose victory everyone was happy - from the fans to the coaching team of Eteri Tutberidze. With a broken leg, which Anya received about a year before these events, many athletes would have stopped skating. And she is right here. She sits with a gold medal, her hands folded on a burgundy tablecloth. And she doesn't know what to talk about either.
I went outside and stood there for an hour, during which, it seems, I managed to shiver to the bone. In "-20" I was standing on the porch in one sweater, forgetting my jacket somewhere on the ice rink.
The absurdity, childishness and some uncomplicated sincerity of the moment completely knocked the ground out from under my feet, and for a long time I was naturally lost. The only thought that popped into my head at the time was:
“This is the beginning of a great journey. Something that we will not hesitate to tell our children about."
This is how Anya Shcherbakova began her journey. A flexible, artistic girl who was always happy to perform, and not fight for her country. I don’t remember a single person who doubted her character. People say it was in her since childhood. “
She starts the free skate and that’s it, this is the end for everyone else” said Victoria Butsaeva, a coach, one of whose students repeatedly competed with Anya in her youth.
Anya's coaches said the same. I think I won’t reveal a big secret if I say that they don’t even watch some of her performances when she performs without them. And not because it is uninteresting or all the same. But because “well, this is Anya, what can possibly go wrong?”.
But it was "wrong". And often.
For all her talent and combativeness, Shcherbakova for a very long time did not have the main thing - jumping talent. At about 10-11 years old, Tutberidze actually asked her to leave. It's hard to believe, but the girl, who was the first among all the revolutionaries of Khrustalny to jump quadruple jumps, did not even succeed in basic triple jumps in her childhood. Such athletes at Tutberidze rarely linger for a long time - and she, too, should not have lingered.
It is difficult to answer the question of what it was. From many people who personally know Shcherbakova and are well acquainted with the situation in Khrustalny from the inside, I often heard that for a long time the relationship between Anya and Eteri Georgievna was not easy. Maybe the coach did not see the future Olympic champion in this non-jumping girl. Although, let's be honest, who among us saw?
Maybe it was something else.
In any case, she went to learn triple jumps in Snezhkom - such an impressive snow complex on the outskirts of Krasnogorsk, to which to go and go. About a year later, the triples came, the reunion took place. I guess without much expectations from the coach.
And then - Russia-2018, which she was not supposed to win, well, just no way. Russia-2019, where Kostornaya would must become the champion in all respects. At that time "Miss Perfection" Alyona was undivided throughout the season. With the exception of the main tournament in the galaxy.
Russia-2020, where Anya arrived with untreated pneumonia against the background of a previous covid. She died on Tutberidze's shoulder in the short program with a temperature of 38 degrees and resurrected in the free program so that even Kamila Valieva, close to the peak of her form, could only barely audibly applaud her in the greenroom. This moment and this skating is the greatest event in the world figure skating of recent years. And Anna then did everything right.
The 2021 World Championship, where she “dragged” the free program without strength purely due to her character, which appeared in her from nowhere. Finally, this season, which began with a ridiculous broken toe while hitting a curb at a training camp in Novogorsk during the filming of TikTok, continued with a neck muscle injury in the fall and falling out of shape, to the national selection in December, and ended with broken boots right here, at the Beijing Olympics, three days before the main skates of her life.
She skated three quads in the free skating in China in the desperate hope of making it to the team tournament. Now it became known that the federation made the decision not to make substitutions at the January European Championships in Tallinn, but for some reason it was not reported to the athletes. Anya found out that her Olympic dream collapsed a couple of hours before us. The boots of her skates could not withstand the pressure of the quads and broke.
But she is not broke.
"
Anna, tell me, how do you do it?" a journalist asked her today.
“
I don’t know. Probably, there is something in me that helps to get ready at the right time. Some kind of self-confidence…”
No one knows. Do you need to know? After all, if this secret were public, there would be no magic in it. Nothing special that only she could do - a girl with not the most outstanding natural characteristics for figure skating.
A girl who has been called an outsider so many times that it’s not even interesting to count. The girl who was criticized for not having a high level of sliding, for bugs in technique, for mistakes, for having too high scores, for taking someone's place in the national team. The girl who once again proved everything to everyone. And tell me that everything that happened to her is not about sports in its purest form.
Today, when the women's press conference ended, I again, as then in Saransk, found myself on the street without a jacket and laughed. The cycle ended the same way it started, right down to the smallest detail.
I dreamed of writing this text for three and a half years. And even if it’s trite to the point of some kind of vulgarity, everything in it, in fact, was for a single phrase:
Anya, you deserve it. Sooner or later we will all realize how awesome you are.
