Anna Shcherbakova

Alex is a hero!
Thanks, but I'm certainly not a hero. The hero is Anna. Kamila is incredibly talented, Sasha is athletic, ambitious and very attractive, but only Anna has her own inexhaustible source of positive energy. It seems to glow from the inside and change people for the better. I can feel it every time I see her perform or hear her voice.

translate of this short street interview:

Q: Do you regret that the Grand Prix was held in Turin and not in China?

A: I wanted to go to China, of course. Let's start with the fact that in China it was me who had the first so-called "bear fall" (мишкопад or mishkopad in original), that is, for the first time after the performance, all the ice was strewn with these bears. Some of these very warm impressions remained. And until now, after that stage, Chinese fans constantly send me packages, write how they are waiting for me, and therefore it is very nice to feel such support from their side. And I know that they often contact my fan group. I really wanted to return.

Q: It seemed to us that during the free program here you directly felt the support of the fans ...

A: It's true, I sincerely love to feel the support of the audience, and it really energizes me, gives me such a feeling that was sorely lacking last year in many competitions that were held without spectators. I really enjoy it, and I get such a burst of energy.

Q: Did you get angry after the short program?

A: Well, I guess it's all there, especially in the moment after the short program. Naturally, one of these strongest feelings is, in a sense, anger at myself, such an insult, yes, that I myself did not cope with something there. But still, it is on a new day that I try to leave not with anger on the previous [day], but somehow from a new leaf, without thinking about the previous one, because the lutz-rittberger is such an insidious cascade ... If I started thinking about yesterday , could make the same mistake again. So I tried to forget altogether.

Q: In the free program, you did one quadruple jump. Was there an inner desire to do more?

A: Probably, if someone told me in "Khrustalny" that I would skate like this, I would have decided that this is the maximum for me and I could not even imagine more. That is, the maximum goal was achieved for me. And after arriving here, there were very successful trainings, and on some adrenaline already in training quadruple jumps went well. The flip was generally stable, there were also good attempts to make a lutz in a six-minute warm-up, and I already wanted to show something more that I can do and not only a flip. But the coaches probably stopped it in time, because it may be too early now, this option has not been developed in training. Still, the coaches insisted that there was one flip, a worked-out version. In training, everything also went on increasing - every day it got better, better, better, and by the end, literally, in the last training session, I caught the right feeling and realized that I had made good progress during this time. And it came as no surprise to me that the training in Turin was good. When I flew here, I told myself that I was already ready for the competition. And, leaving for training, I was expecting such a result from myself.

second part:

Q: The free program also premiered a new dress.

A: Yes, a new dress was made, and everyone really paid a lot of attention to it. I wanted to make a dress so that everyone would like it, they selected each color, color combination, thought about which pattern to add so that it all looked good and suited the image of the program. And I really like this dress. I really like the program itself, it seems to me that it suits me very much. I am pleased to skate it, and I feel this program very well. Program approached me immediately, as it seems to me, internally for sure. The music is changing, and you need to correspond to it, and this is not only the result of training, this is something internal too. This music suits me. Last year, it was also changed at some point, because when this kind of music is played, it also gives energy. This is how the audience, when I feel this support, I also feel this music, the increase in tempo, and now it gives energy and strength to go faster, make movements more powerful.

Q: You played in Turin two years ago. What has changed in you during this time?

A: I really involuntarily even constantly compared my feelings then and now ... Just a second ...

[Stops, turns head]

We were taken here to a banquet, it seems to me, right here.

[gestures with his hand]

There was a banquet here two years ago, I remember. Yes, we passed here ... I remembered my feelings then, I also remembered during training. Probably, then I was more nervous. I remember, then, even during unofficial training on the day of arrival, how I worried about each jump. Probably, then these experiences for the worse influenced me. I was worried and made more mistakes. Now I try, on the contrary, to use it to my advantage. Due to the fact that I'm a little nervous, I try to show more and more good jumps. And in general I feel more confident than then. In any case, it is very pleasant to remember those emotions.

She's incapable of giving a bad interview. I am just in awe of how reflected, mature and amazing she is, every time. Thank you so much @Alex Fedorov and all translators! Although Anya is also incredible in English.
She's one of the savviest athletes I've ever seen. She never makes a misstep, but rather, always says the right thing, always shows good sportsmanship, is always polite and friendly with everyone, while I'm sure that deep inside, there are times she wants to snipe at something someone has said to her, or roll her eyes, or whatever, but she never, ever shows a hint of it, and I think that's a real talent and a testament to her discipline and self-control, and as you indicated, what she does say is always eloquent, and her English is outstanding. She is easy to cheer for and never leaves her fans making excuses for her, and that doesn't happen often in most sports. Molodets, Anna.

Absolutely! So well said :)
And one of the most astounding things is that she's still just 17, but she sounded exactly this way when she was 14 too :dbana:, and it never seems rehearsed or fake, she appears honest and sincere too, all the while being polite and friendly. I have no doubts that she will be successful at anything she wants in life with this attitude and personality.

Yeah, I haven't followed her closely, as although I like her skating alright overall and certain aspects of it more than most skaters, she's just not my skater (but I certainly don't dislike her--I have cheered for her before and probably will again), but I have noticed this about her from the beginning, and it even extends to hardships like the broken leg as a junior, when she never played the victim card but just went through the pain of rehab, got back on her skates, and took care of business again.

Also, you would never know from reading her interviews or listening to her that she is pretty and wealthy; there is nothing arrogant or privileged about her. She comes across completely like a normal kid, so that if you didn't know that she was talented enough to be a world champion or that her father has stacks of money, you would not guess it from her demeanor, and that too is rare. Most talented, rich, and attractive girls can't help but to show it. She's a great skater, and she seems to be a great person, as well.

It's better later than never... I promised some good quality photos of Anna taken by my friend at Budapest Trophy, so here you are! :)(Unfortunately, he attended only the SP, so no photos from the FP.)

My non-translation input: The commentators don't give many subjective comments (this is true no matter who skates), primarily describing the elements as she performs them, but express that they are impressed by the execution especially on the 4F and 3Lz-3Lo, and the (I don't know how to say it in English) "acting" (it means something like interpretation?) and performance.

(we can't all be translating heroes like Alex Fedorov ;) )
Also the comments on that video are quite nice, nicer than usually :)
wonder why they dubbed over her voice?
I think it's because it would've taken a long time to record an entire minute worth of text, and Anna is quite busy now.

There should be a rule in this forum: if your name is Alex, you need to praise Anna at least once a week. I’m good for this week, did my part already. Haha

Come to think of it, the above rule should be apply to any name that begins with a letter from A to Z. Haha

I don’t think I will be able to appear here very often, but I like your proposal. And how ashamed I am that a year ago I did not know anything about Anna, despite the fact that I live in Russia.

Anna got another sponsorship, an ad for Sberbank.

Wow, that's really a big sponsorship. Not only because the company is big. Many big companies do a few bigger and many smaller sponsorship.
There is a very elaborate commercial starring Anna and I guess it will be broadcast to be seen by wide audiences.
That's really great and I'm very happy for Anna.
