Any Sasha updates?

Do you think the Olympic Games you've spent four seasons training for and the Nationals which will represent your return to competition in three and a half years present an analogous situation?

Well you'd have to ask her. Depends on how badly she wants it.

That said IF she shows and has a less than stellar SP I would not be surprised in the least by a mid-comp WD

true... well we'll have to wait and see... I'm so happy to have found that my cable carrier here in PTY has added NBC to their channel list so FINALLY I will be able to see Nationals since they were removed from ESPN and the Olys... I hope Sasha doesn't WD but I guess it could be the very same day that she's supposed to do he SP... just to make Nats more exciting, I hope she does skates.

I think if Sasha shows up and skates the SP, even if it's less than stellar, she will skate the LP. I don't see her WD in the middle of the competition, unless she's in last place or close to it! Even if she's a bit back in the pack, she's seen the other ladies and knows they are all beatable. I just wonder if she's going to show.

Here is what I think will happen. Sasha has prepared a short program only, intending to withdraw before the LP.

But then she gives a super performance in the SP and ends up in first place with 60 points.

This causes her to rethink her plan. She goes out for the LP and skates her SP twice back to back, scores 120 points for a 180 total and wins going away.

Ashley is defnitiely improved this year, but she cannot score as high as Alissa, if both are clean and that could very well happen in the SP, and for the LP it remains to be seen if Ashley can come back from behind.

You make a good point, and I agree in theory, but Alissa has never really done 2 clean programs. When she won the silver and gold GP medals in 2005 her URs went unnoticed, that doesn't happen anymore. She landed all her jumps in her LP at worlds this year and only one was downgraded, her score for the LP was only 106 though. Ashley gets 106 WITH her mistakes. All i'm saying is even if Alissa doesn't fall once or double any jumps in the free, internationally, her score will not be that high. At nationals, they can give her a high score, but at worlds last year Alissa landing all her jumps only got her 8th place in the LP. Rachael didn't do the 3-3 and her score was still significantly higher. I know people say Rachael doesn't have anything to hold her up except jumps but that's not really true, she gets good PCS and mostly level 4s for her spins and spirals.

It's unfortunate because I feel like Alissa, Mirai, and Caroline will be in trouble internationally no matter how they perform - Alissa and Mirai for URs, Caroline for speed and technique issues. Rachael and Ashley have a better shot at scoring higher at the Olympics.

It remains to be seen, though, if that's the pair who's actually going to be sent to the Olys.

But yes, it sucks. Then again, the Olympic season is typically full of surprises.

And also, scoring potential means nothing. Who can deliver under the biggest spotlight, however, means everything.

It would seem evident that a skater cannot do this but is there anything in the ISU rules to prevent it? If there's not, then I think Sasha should definitely go for it!

First we have to see if they can skate better at Natls.......or they won't get a chance to show off their high international scoring abilty. :)

Very true. Mirai and Caroline seem to be very good at staying on their feet the vast majority of the time, should they make it to the Olympics, this might come in handy and result in high placements. If the contenders can't deliver, simply landing 5 or 7 triples might be enough to hold them up even with their issues they too often get dinged for.

Just an observation: Though high PCS is often first granted by international judges and not by judges at national competitions, national judges pick up on the practice later in the season ;-)

There will be score buffering in the National scores whether we want it or not, and the USFS is hardly the only one to do it. Happened in Russia with Plushenko, happened in Japan, etc.

I don't mind so much a different yardstick being used but they should keep using that same stick throughout the competition, not change it out before the faves skate.

ha ha! With 2 spiral sequences, 2 footwork sequences, 2 lutz combos, and 2 solo flips and axels?

I couldn't agree more. If the scores are inflated, we'll know they are inflated and just accept it and realize the scores will be different at the Olympics. However, if the scores are inflated for some and not for others I will be VERY angry.

Well lets get ready to get angry.

Haha yes. I just watched her performance again and Christina Gao got a whopping 56.33 for her TES (I won't compare PCS, it's always lower for junior competitions) in the LP which is shorter and has less elements than a senior level LP. To put that in perspective, here are the TES scores of the competition from their LPs this season (keep in mind that senior level FS have 13 elements and one is a spiral sequence, whereas junior level FS have 11 elements and one is only a lone spiral)

Ashley: GPF- 55.97, COR- 54.81

Rachael: SA- 60.35, CoC- 48.51

Mirai: SC- 51.69, CoC- 42.90

Alissa: SC- 46.57, COR- 45.98

Caroline: SC- 39.32, TEB- 47.89

Even with the extra elements, only Rachael's TES at SA, where she was awesome, is higher. I could potentially see Gao pulling a Mirai Nagasu and winning nationals should the contenders fail to step up their technical games.

 a little TOO much credit perhaps??? She could definitely be the "Surprise Skater" I was alluding to earlier but I really don't see her making top 2 let alone winning. Maybe, just maybe top 6.

You are probably right but scores don't lie, just thought it was interesting. We all know PCS scores pretty much decide the winners these days anyway.
