While, you are covering flutzes and lips, I have a question about axels...

In a recent competition, a skater attempted a triple axel. He doubled it. Later in the program, he purposely did a double axel.

So, does he get credit for attempting a triple axel, minus -1 to -3? And also credit for a double axel?

Or does he get credit for one double axel and the second one doesn't count because it violates the Zayak rule?

Zayak only applies to triples. The only limitation with doubles is that you cannot have more than 8 jumping paths for men and 7 for women (in FS). For the first jump in you example, the skater should get credit for a double unless it was cheated by no more than 1/4 turn.

That leads me to another question that perhaps it might be hard to answer, but I'd appreciate anyone who can...

Why don't more skaters do jumping passes involving several doubles? Particularly the women... wouldn't the judges be impressed by a 4 jump combination of doubles done cleanly, instead of all the wobbly 1 triple jump jumping passes?

I have to agree with Sk8fanconvert. I don't see anything wrong with having a graduated score in GOE for a really good Luzt, a pretty good Lutz, an average Lutz, and a bad and a really bad one. A mild flutz is bad but no worse than a wonky landing, no flow out, a long boring telegraphed entry, falling down, etc. I don't see anything wrong with judging the quality of the element in its entirety.

One of my friends gets NHK in the U.S. & taped the NHK Trophy for me. I can't tell you how superior their coverage is to that on ESPN. NHK does cover the short programs. Speaking of Arakawa, her short was spectacular. She skated to "Madame Butterfly" and it was jam packed with alot of steps & great spins. I just don't like Shizuka's camel spin...she still needs more extension in her free leg. She also hit her 3Z-3T combo. She was spectacular. That's absolutely the best short program I've seen all season. When she got off of the Ice, Tatiana gave her a huge hug & kiss while the Japanese crowd cheered. I also heard that Suguri has a great short program, but I haven't seen it yet thanks to poor coverage of skating in the U.S. this season. By the way, Miki Ando missed her flip jump in the short, but she hit her opening 3Z-3L.
