This is heartbreaking to hear. I saw him live so many times on tour - such an amazing performer. A giant lovable teddy bear man who took great care with his partners. He will be greatly missed - one of a kind, legendary man. I wish comfort to his wife and family and all in his circle.💔

Dream of Love and rest peacefully Artur

Today the world just ot a little dimmer. His former partner Oksana Kasakova says it was complications to heart surgery ut regardless we have lost a master of pairs skating. Some felt he should have had gold in 1994 as well as 92 and98 Regardless he will e missed. He was an artist, a technician and a real competitior. I am in shock. So young still

Correct . Tass said "Dmitriev had not survived heart surgery in a Moscow hospital and died on Sunday evening." Oddly, Sergei had known (as I remember) heart issues....dont know if they had stents back then. On 20 November 1995, Grinkov collapsed and died from a massive heart attack in Lake Placid, New York, while he and Gordeeva were practicing for the upcoming 1995–1996 Stars on Ice tour. Doctors found that Grinkov had severely clogged coronary arteries (to the point where his arterial opening was reportedly the size of a pinhole), which caused the heart attack; later testing revealed that he also had a genetic risk factor linked with premature heart attacks. The risk factor is called the PLA-2 variant and is also known as the "Grinkov Risk Factor".Grinkov was 28 years old. His wife was 24 and their daughter was three years old.

I saw a comment from Oksana Kazakova on social media ( sorry, I do not have the link anymore) his second partner saying he had an aortic dissection.

Didn't have the computer on this morning, so only found out after dinner when I saw the story on the BBC's teletext service. (Online version)

So sad to hear. Artur Valeryevich retired before I started watching figure skating, so I was more familiar with him in his role as a coach. And as father of Artur Arturovich.

Ironically, on the day Artur died, I was looking at something associated with the 1992 Olympics online. So, as my tribute, here are his and Natalia's winning programmes from Albertville:

Natalia Mishkutenok / Artur Dmitriev - 1992 Olympic Games SP
Natalia Mishkutenok / Artur Dmitriev - 1992 Olympic Games FS

His death is a great loss to the sport.

My thoughts go out to his family, friends, and fans.

I was so sorry to learn of Artur Dmitriev's death earlier today. He is such a memorable and accomplished skater. Though he wasn't young anymore, his death still comes at a relatively young age, and so terrible to happen during heart surgery. My deepest condolences to his loved ones, friends, and colleagues. ❤️🎗

The 1991 Worlds podium photo accompanying the Reuters article brings back such poignant memories of these pairs teams. 🥲 They were so young, then. And so was I.

It occurs to me that since we had a pair team (Efimova/Mitrofanov) do a tribute program honoring Gordeeva/Grinkov last season, somebody should do a tribute to Artur this season!

Unfortunately pairs men with the kind of charisma and skill needed to pull that off are pretty few and far between.
A great opportunity for any Russian pair.
I think Mishina & Galliamov could do a very good tribute program.

Aortic dissection is a tear in the heart layers that causes bleeding between the layers and cuts off the blood supply requiring emergency surgery. Actor John Ritter also died of it. I have seen many cases having provided blood support in such cases. Surgery can be successful but I have seen a lot that sadly are not. If discovered early via symptoms, it can be treated medically.
