Ban on Carolina Kostner Over

As long as she can keep her medals, everything else is just a bonus. I mean she is going to retire anyway, the ban is meaningless.

The disqualification starts from today so she can keep her medal from Sochi. That's the key point.
If the disqualification would be (and this option was possible) from the day of her admission at the "Procura" (public prosecutor's office) in Bolzano the medal would be gone.
Source of the news is the newspaper "Repubblica".

What punishment did her former boyfriend get? In my opinion 4 months would have been an okay punishment for her.

I disagree. Lying alone doesn't taint any of her hard-earned wins.

The wins aren't tainted, but, among some, her reputation is . I am sure she would prefer this not be a part of her bio . Her wikipedia bio has already been updated to include this affair.

Well... at least it wasn't the ridiculous "longer than her ex" ban that was proposed. It doesn't really diminish her in my eyes, since the ban has nothing to do with her own wins.

I hope it doesn't affect her future prospects as a show performer, or as a coach.

I know people say she was going to retire anyway, but I'm sure she wanted to do it on her own terms (and who knows, we never even got a definite retirement statement...)

I don't think the group that has banned her had the power to strip her of medals. For the Olympic medals wouldn't that have to be decided by the IOC?

Does this affect her being able to do shows like Stars on ice? What shows would be considered ISU sponsored? I seem to remember some controversy after 2010 Olympics when Joannie Rochette wanted to skate at a benefit for her mother but it wasn't approved by ISU or Skate Canada or something...does anybody know? I don't know if Carolina was coaching or planning to but not being able to do ISU sponsored events would probably have a significant effect on her income and not sure if sponsors would like her promoting things during her suspension. So even if she wasn't going to compete, this is still a pretty stiff punishment. No wonder she is fighting to appeal. I think though that Carolina's good reputation throughout her career will see her bounce back from this, though.

So I guess I am confused. They came to her door looking for her boyfriend. They must have come there because he has to let them know where he is (at all times??). So wouldn't she have known that it was possible they could come to her house looking for him? Then how did she know to lie for him if she didn't know he was doping? Was he hiding around the corner whispering to her to tell them he wasn't there? These are all rhetorical questions, but ones I am wondering!

I think it's just that her boyfriend gave them a time and place in Italy but they came knocking on their door in Germany at a different time, Alex told Carolina to tell them he wasn't there because it wasn't the specified time and place and Carolina did that because it was supposed to be respecting his privacy. She didn't know he was doping, just that officials gave them a surprise visit.

I think the bottom line is - for whatever reason be it love or some decision to "respect" his privacy - she decided to lie, and to me there's no reasonable excuse to lie especially when you are a veteran athlete at her level and you are lying to doping officials/testers.

A year ban from competition is fair to me - she should consider herself very lucky that this was all finalized after the Olympics where she was still able to compete.

The ban seems completely reasonable to me.

I hope that the skaters who are caught up in this ridiculous #IStandWithCarolina thing aren't so blinded as to not check on the rules for skating in shows with a banned skater. I'd hate to see anyone's eligibility messed with because of her.

The bottom line here is that the anti-doping fascists expect all athletes to be informers.

Disgusting.

I agree. WADA believes that doping is a crime and lying on behalf on the one who's doping is abetting the crime. I was initially shocked that there was talk of a three-year ban and the possibility of her medals being stripped because I think that the punishment is way, way, too much for someone who wasn't the one doping. The one year suspension is fair.

She lied straight to the faces of anti-doping agencies to cover for her boyfriend. Who she knew was breaking the rules. She KNEW he was doing something wrong! Whether she knew he was taking drugs or she knew he was in a different place to where he'd told the authorities and hadn't told them, she KNEW he was breaking the rules. The rules that she herself was bound to as an elite athlete.

Sorry, you actually think she should have just been able to skip off into the sunset?

Hopefully with her being such a prominent skater that does shows, Feds will send all their skaters an email or letter reminding them of the rules.

I agree with you. There was an investigation and they did find that she broke a rule. Whether the punishment matches the crime, so to speak, is debatable and it is up to Carolina to fight for appeal. I think Carolina is so respected and beloved in the figure skating community, and rightly so, that people just want to support her unconditionally. But even well-meaning and generally upstanding people make costly mistakes and although true friends/supporters should not turn their backs completely from them, I think there is a way to show support without endorsing what got her in trouble in the first place.

Okay...16 months. But she's going to submit an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Let's hope something fruitful happens with her appeal.

It is againts the rules? I didn´t knew. I thought she simply could do shows like Disney on Ice or SoI, etc.

Could you provide a source please? Thanks in advance.

I´m no sure, but when you appeal the court can accept or not the appeal, am I wrong? And also if the court agree with the ruling but they think the sentance was too soft couldn´t they rise her ban?.

Thanks for the information in advance.
