Boyang Jin

Could someone here kindly give a briefly description of Boyang's FS. I haven't got the courage to watch from my video recorder at the moment, too heart broken. Thanking you in advance.

He fell on his solo 4T, but didn't get called UR for it (though he should've been). Other than that, he was sure with all his jumps, as always. As usual his Cantina Band sequence was charming. He executed the program he had as best as he could. He maybe could have performed a little more during his step sequence, but that's something he could always work on. I personally think that he was able to bring a good amount of performance to his program, though not perfect. He'll keep improving now!

Here is what I posted in another thread. There wasn't a lot, because they were actually quiet so we could enjoy his skate.

NBC Commentary – Jin’s Free Skate

Jin was fantastic in the Short Program. He lands his jumps with surgical precision. He looked very nervous in the 6-minute warm up. He has quite a few quads planned. He starts with the hardest one, the 4Lz. Nice!!!!!

He will do 4 quads in this F.S. Next is the 4S. He does the very difficult combo 3A-1Lo-3S. You can tell he’s taking it moment by moment. That’s what you have to do when you have this type of technical content planned.

Jin was the first man from China to win a medal at Worlds. China has never had a men’s medalist at the Olympics.

We’re into the second half now. 10% bonus from this point on. (A fall) The 4T looked to be slightly under rotated.

Wow! 3 out of 4 quads he got!!! He has struggled all season and hasn’t been in the mix and he comes to the Olympics and has been this consistent quad machine.

The above commentary is the word-for-word comments of Tara and Johnny for the FS. They said a lot of wonderful things in the SP too, although I didn't write everything down. Please note there is not one iota about his poor artistry, as everyone likes to accuse them of. If anything, I find that they are quite the fans of Boyang. They are also totally enamored of his remarkable jumps and always emphasize how difficult the 4Lz is. They said his SP 4Lz was stunning and probably the best they've seen from him all season.

I am still elated over the men's programs and results. I too wish Boyang could have medaled. Seeing him has his Olympic moment was one of the highlights of the night for me!

He's actually super attractive. HE's FAR too young for me, but he's very good-looking.

I adored his plaid suit he wore to the gala banquets last year!

I might have to relaunch my weibo account, except I have no idea how I got it in the first place (I think technically as someone in the U.S. I can't have one, but somehow I was able to access it...)

He's the most dapper of all the top 6 men! Just want him to get a new hairstylist!

It would be great, now that the Olympics are over, if he could sign up for ice shows. That would help him improve a lot. Han Cong talked about how participating in shows helped him improve his artistry vastly. Honestly, I like the kind of athletic style he had in his SP. He just needs more transitions.

Powerful choreography can be just as intriguing and mesmerising as flowy, soft stuff. Of course, it would be great if he could do both. But he has four years to add to his repertoire!

Someone pointed out that the 'Bronze medalist blessing' is still in effect. Since Yuzu won in Korea, Boyang can win in Beijing.

What is this?

For the last few Olympics, the male champions started their careers with a Bronze medal on the World Championships on their first Worlds appearance. Yuzu, Plushenko and Yagudin all started their careers with a World Bronze. Boyang has also won the Bronze on his first Worlds appearance.

EDIT: I forgot Evan Lysacek. He also got the Bronze at Worlds first.

I actually don't know too many choreographers that I like! I don't really keep up with them.

Lori Nichols has done a good job masking his weaknesses... But I think she should stop masking them and start challenging him. She made beautiful programs for S/H.

Shae Lynn Bourne has done a good job with Nathan Chen. She brings out the best in him, and gave him a cool style to work with, which suited him more than his ballet pieces the previous season.

Sandra Bezic also has the same approach as Shae Lynn Bourne, where she lets the natural style speak for itself.

David Wilson would not be a good fit. He is pretty adamant about his stylings. Yuna worked wonders with him, but I think it was because it was a perfect fit. And I still wonder what could have been if she'd worked with Shae Lynn or Sandra.

For Boyang's style -- I just don't know what "his" style is! He did the athletic style of his SPs this season and the previous one really, really well. But I'd like him to inject more power into it. He needs to open up his upper body and really create some volume with the way he moves. He had a lot of success with his SP StSq this season, but it could've been even better with more commitment.

I don't want to limit himself to "funny" programs, so it's nice to see him trying something different. A good thing about him is that he hasn't molded himself into a specific style like Shoma already has, so he can feel free to try more. Maybe he can try some hip-hop -- he actually has good musicality. He can try something completely dark and serious next season for his LP.

I also think that he can really mold his style into something with power, yet with a lot of flow. This seems to be a signature style for Chinese pairs with Sui/Han and Shen/Zhao. If he improves his flow further, he can do something more modern. Or maybe, if he wants to do a light-hearted program, he can do a Broadway tune, like "Zing! Go the Strings of my Heart" or something.

Or maybe skate to some EDM! That would be something really new, and he can add power to it.

He can keep the nerdiness for his EX programs. Or dance to something he likes there.
