Partly new thread...

Ah, thank you, ladyjane!  :points:

:thank:

I'm actually surprised that we have already managed to post 9 pages worth of posts about this season! 😲

Anyway, back to business. There will be a large contingent of skaters from these islands heading to Poland for this week's Challenger event, the Warsaw Cup.

  • For Team GB, we have Natasha McKay in Ladies; and Anastasia Vaipan-Law / Luke Digby in Pairs.
  • For Team Ireland, we have Sam McAllister and Conor Stakelum in Men.
  • For Team Canada, we have Molly Lanahan / Dmitre Razgulajevs in Ice Dance
  • For Team Latvia, we have Aurelija Ipolito / Luke Russell in Ice Dance.
  • For Team Lithuania, we have Aleksandra Golovkina in Ladies.
  • For Team Poland, we have Olexandra Borysova / Aaron Freeman in Ice Dance.

Well, Aleksandra is based in the UK, so we can claim her as one of our own! ;)

Apologies if I have missed anybody.

All the best to all of them!

Great Post @CaroLiza_fan I'm looking forward to seeing Aaron Freeman, who used to train at Lee Valley with Marika & Vitaliy Baranov, skate with his new Polish partner. He used to skate with the sister of Luke Russell, now Aurelija Ippolito's partner.

From their Instagrams, Katarina & Billy share a love of posing for arty photos.
Kat & Billy definitely seem to match well in charm, flair, and flexibility. They did a very special photo shoot together with some wonderful pictures that they have been posting. Billy's Mom has posted some too on her Instagram. Surely, the photographer deserves a lot of credit too! Other than their recent photo shoot, Kat & Billy also have great photos they post of their individual off-ice activities.

Just did a bit of digging around, and the original announcement from the BBC back in March says it is going to be 8 episodes, each 45 minutes long. 😲

https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/2021/new-sport-documentaries

So, that will be something to look forward to!

I hope they will be shown on the TV once BBC3 re-launches as a linear channel in the new year. Because I wouldn't mind recording them to keep.

Anyway, gotta go. Marilena is about to skate.

@CaroLiza_fan as you're the King of online research, I wonder if you can find a schedule for BBC website livestreaming of the British Championships? I tried searching last week and came up blank, I hope the docu series is not a substitute for coverage of Nationals?

Thank you for the challenge. Unfortunately, that is exactly what it was. I've been digging around, and I can't find anything.

From past experience, the best place to look for upcoming live sport on the BBC is this page on the BBC Sport website:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/live-guide

But, it only goes a few days in advance. Which isn't a lot of use.

The Sky EPG goes 7 days in advance. So, if there is coverage on the Red Button, we should find out in the next few days (depending on whether they show the whole event, or wait until later in the week).

So, I guess we'll just have to wait for an announcement from the Fed. Because, whether coverage is on the BBC or somewhere else, I would like to think that they would tell us where we can watch it.

I'm disappointed to see that there are no Dundonald Club skaters taking part in Nationals this year. HOWEVER, there are some taking part in this week's Young Star event in Sheffield. Which is a good sign for the future.

Update

And just as I was about to close the Fed's website, I spot a tab saying "BIS TV". So, I clicked it, and it took me here:

https://tv.iceskating.org.uk/

So, the Fed are streaming Nationals themselves, and charging for it. £7 a day, or £10 for the whole week.

Here's the announcement in the News section:

https://www.iceskating.org.uk/post/watch-every-skate-from-the-british-championships-live-on-bis-tv

The announcement was only posted a few hours ago, so that's why it wasn't coming up on my searches. (I wonder if they did it today as a direct result of you asking?)

It says that it says the Seniors will be shown on the BBC, but that BIS TV is the only place where you can see the other levels.

Putting the bulk of Nationals behind a paywall. That'll really help to get more people interested in the sport! :rolleye:

@CaroLiza_fan
I totally agree! I thought something fishy was going on. :(:rolleye:

I have to see Ashlie & Atl, and I'm interested in all the Novice levels of Dance, Pairs and I'm looking forward to seeing Alexa Severn's progress in the Singles. Last year Junior Ladies was a fantastic competition, so was Junior Dance. So I bought the 9.99 all week pass as it's cheaper. No thank you, no email, no nothing. Just "Your payment was successful". :rolleye:

If the BBC is still showing Seniors, you can bet this decision has something to do with them not wanting lower level skating scheduled at the same time, as they complained previously after the first year they livestreamed it. As you rightly say, no way to encourage youngsters to take up the sport or continue with it. I imagine BBC said they would only cover Seniors this year, and so BIS decided to organise a way to show the rest of the Championships. But I hope it's a quality stream like the professional one at Tayside Trophy and not some amateur operation. After all, we're paying!

Although Katarina DelCamp is not yet ready to fully reveal why she and Ian Somerville split, her latest Instagram post gives hints that the split was difficult for her, at first:

"This past April, my world was flipped upside down, without going into the story (because I’m not ready 😔) I would instead like to give a huge thank you to the people who lifted me up. I never thought I would compete again and suddenly the phone call came that would change everything, an opportunity for a try out with @_billyfrench_ . . ."

I'm sure in the unsuspecting moment, it must have been hard, what with contemplating dashed dreams, etc. However, it sounds pretty dramatic to say she never thought she'd compete again. Never is a long time. If ice dance is her passion, she's still so young, there was certainly opportunity to continue pursuing finding a new partner, no matter how hard it generally is to find anyone, let alone a good fit. As it turns out, Billy was scouting for a new partnership. His camp must have heard about the Ian/ Kat split, and pounced immediately.

I think the split with Ian turns out to have a silver lining for Kat, since new and exciting adventures have opened up for her. She was the weaker partner with Ian, and they basically had one more year in juniors had they remain partnered. I can see Ian being ready to move up to seniors this season in order to get his feet wet prior to retirements of top U.S. ice dancers opening up more competitive room in senior U.S. ice dance, post 2022 Olympics. Plus, Ian & Kat had already been surpassed by the Browns in juniors, along with some other teams making strides to catch up to them. The new, exciting pair, Flores/Tsarevski, were likely to surpass Ian/Kat this season. Surely the difficult task for Ian was finding a new partner, as well as breaking the news to Kat. Perhaps their coaches had some input as well. Who knows.

Anyway, Kat has landed on her blades in an excellent situation. She and Billy are around the same age, and thus they'll have a great chance to grow together for two more years in juniors. Plus, there's more opportunity altogether to rise to the top in British senior ice dance. Not to mention the wonderful opportunity to train with Mark Hanretty and Chris Dean. Kat may even be able to make it to senior Worlds before Ian is able to with his new partner, simply as a result of U.S. depth in ice dance.

Kat and Billy have both posted additional pictures from their fabulous photo shoot:

:hap10:Good Luck to ALL British Skaters, from Novice to Senior, in all disciplines at the Championships, starting tomorrow at 11.30am with AdvNov Girls. Excited to see how #AlexaSevern and #LowennaPrigg are progressing.

:hap10:😍

It's only Claire Youdale doing commentary again on the BIS livestream, still asking endless inane questions of Emily Haywood, former skater & coach. Could BIS really not find anyone with an ounce of Skating knowledge? I presume it'll be her on the BBC Senior coverage aswell? Oh, and she talked during the National Anthem being played aswell. :censored:

BTW BIS TV is playing performances from the August Qualifier - MIND BLOWN - #LilahandLewis Lion King had completely different music tracks and choreo. Like a different program!

The BIS TV system won't let me record with sound, only pictures, and I specifically bought the subscription to record Ashlie & Atl. Gutted. The first version of Lion King was going to be a bonus! :(:(:(

At last! Jenny Bill has been invited into the Commentary box this evening for Advanced Novice Singles! My sanity is saved! Sending feedback & complaining seems to have worked! British Championships! Great to hear you Jenny!

Addendum to my earlier post:
I think the split will end up working in both Kat's and Ian's best interests. Ian looked good with his new partner, Emily Bratti, at the recent Cup of Austria event (they placed 8th overall, out of 17). Meanwhile, Kat will have an opportunity to improve in juniors for two more years, representing Great Britain, a country where she might be able to get to senior Worlds faster than she would have in the U.S. Kat and her new partner,

Again, these are fun images from Kat/Billy's photo shoot:

An on-ice slo-mo clip from Billy:
