I watched the Senior Pairs SP this morning, and I just have to pass comment about Lydia and Harry's SP music.

Who on Earth thought it would be a good idea to take Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata", and put the words of "California Dreaming" by The Mamas And The Papas on top of it?!

I love both of them. But not together! 🙉

It's only Claire Youdale doing commentary again on the BIS livestream, still asking endless inane questions of Emily Haywood, former skater & coach. Could BIS really not find anyone with an ounce of Skating knowledge? I presume it'll be her on the BBC Senior coverage aswell? Oh, and she talked during the National Anthem being played aswell. :censored:

At last! Jenny Bill has been invited into the Commentary box this evening for Advanced Novice Singles! My sanity is saved! Sending feedback & complaining seems to have worked! British Championships! Great to hear you Jenny!

:clap::coffee::pray::hap10::thank::rock::jump:

I have to be honest, I was disappointed with the commentary during the Pairs. Jenny Bill and David King are both hugely knowledgable. But, listening to them during that segment, I couldn't help but think that they were holding back, and were tailoring their commentary to be at a level that Claire understood.

I lost count of the number of times that David referred to elements as "tricks". :drama: I absolutely HATE it when people use that term, as it trivialises specialist moves that take the skaters a long time to learn and perfect.

As the old saying goes, "two's company; three's a crowd". I have always believed that to be the case when it comes to commentary teams. And the commentary during the Senior Pairs SP just provided further proof of this.

There were too many people in the commentary box. And unfortunately it was poor Jenny that wasn't getting much of a chance to speak. It was pretty much all Claire and David. Now, I've nothing against David talking a lot when commentating on the category that he competed in. It is his area of expertise, after all. But I would have preferred Jenny to be the one that was talking with him. Because at least she would have brought up more sensible things to discuss than Claire!

But, this is the BBC. They insist on foisting clueless commentators onto us every time they cover a figure skating competition. Claire Youdale for the British Championships. Kat Downes for the World Championships.

Oh, how I miss Sue Barker commentating on figure skating. She may have been a tennis player, but at least she was a true professional that did their research before stepping into the commentary booth. There aren't enough people like that in broadcasting nowadays. (And I'm not just talking about sports broadcasting).

Well said above @CaroLiza_fan agree with every word 100%

It was just the same come the Dance, they brought in a Scouser with a really heavy accent called Keith Hudson? Never heard of him, but he made fun of Jenny for knowing facts about the couples! That's what Commentators should know! Katie Stainsby had a right go at him on Twitter (not naming him but the Commentator) for not crediting her but just her partner, Swiss skater Oscar Peter, as Coach of the 2 Intermediate Novice couples making their debut.

If BIS expect us to pay to watch, please be professional. :palmf:
Also captions and scores all over the place!

It’s a great competition but yes the coverage could be better. That said we’re lucky it’s easily accessible on iPlayer.

I had to turn off early because the commentary was driving me up the wall. I hate it when they fudge the names too - we live in a multicultural society, it really isn't hard to learn how to say names correctly. My main issue with it is the incessant praise - and I get it, it's nationals and they know them personally etc however, you don't need to say something was amazing and perfect when it wasn't. For example, to me, Lilah and Lewis phoned it in a bit - because why not? They've had a busy couple of months and this was a guaranteed win for them.

Anyway, just wanted to say how much I truly enjoyed Phebe and James - they've impressed me every outing this season. They're such a great match and their programmes suit them so well. I'd like to see them in juniors for another year while they work on their speed and lifts a little, but otherwise, great stuff.

Oh, and what a coup for Anastasia and Luke! So looking forward to seeing them keep improving. Will they get to Euros instead of Zoe and Chris? It was super tight.

What an absolute genuine beautiful soul that boy is. I have followed British skating for a while and PJ has always been my absolute favourithe. I don’t know if skaters read these posts but if you ever pop in PJ, good luck, you will be missed during competitions but I have no doubt that you will still be making so many people smile during your future endeavours.

It's Official PJ has announced his retirement from competition.

It's a shame, because he was so enjoyable to watch. And because he came across as a really nice guy, you were always rooting for him!

And for these reasons, I can see him doing very well as a show skater.

It's just a pity that there isn't much of a show scene in this country compared to what there is on the other side of the Atlantic.

Who knows, if this show that he is planning is successful, it may encourage him to organise more, and breathe life into the whole scene.

What an absolute genuine beautiful soul that boy is.

You have just perfectly summed up what I felt while watching that video.

In the first half, you could tell that PJ was rattling through it because he knew that if he paused, he would get emotional. And sure enough, when he did pause, he did get emotional!

This was not an off the shelf retirement announcement. Every word was coming from his heart. And he was feeling every one of them.

It just endears you even more to him. And you just want him to be successful in his post-competitive life.

All the best for the future PJ!

I hope Dancing on Ice invite him on to give an exhibition this coming series, mind you their rink is so small.

Aw, what a pity - he will be sorely missed - as @teainamug says, a beautiful soul, too - always very gracious with fans, and very humble. I was at the British Champs on Saturday and Sunday, and his short programme was fantastic. Then nerves seemed to get the better of him for the free - such a shame, as his jumps in warm-up were great. Loads of support for him in the audience, too. I wish him all the best with the next chapter - I'm sure he'll make a brilliant success of whatever he does.

I've uploaded the Junior Ice Dance Champions

Who's in your avatar - @La Rhumba - is it Ashlie Slatter and Atl Ongay-Perez? I think I recognise them from the British Champs on Saturday and Sunday - great skaters!

Yes, the photo is from the August Qualifier in the Pattern Dances. My favourites :hap10::love2::giggle:

I was at the rink for the British Championships this weekend - maybe the TV coverage didn't do Lilah and Lewis justice, because they definitely weren't dialling it in - they gave fantastic performances, especially in the free dance, which was brilliantly done - and it's really, really improved since I saw it in August.

Agree with you about Phoebe and James and Anastasia and Luke!

Awww, I've only noticed P.J. recently at international events. He's fun to watch. Did he have a chance to win British championships again and faltered? Was there an opportunity lost to attend the Olympics?

On his Instagram P.J. sounds a mix of happy and sad about retiring, and also relieved and looking forward to moving into a more relaxed life, coaching and doing shows. More power to him! Wish I'd been following P.J. sooner, but unless skaters from different countries compete regularly at international comps, there's not many opportunities to get to know them.

P.J. Is amazing. I have been following him for a couple of years. He reminds me of Keegan in the best ways. So sad he is retiring. I had gotten the idea in the past it was a money thing.

Ah yes. It's that way for so many skaters who could achieve perhaps much more with financial resources to help them train the way they need to. Rohene Ward experienced similar financial and training challenges back-in-the-day. Rohene was so very talented technically and aesthetically, but due to lack of resources and access to strategic high level training, he often faltered in competitions. His brilliant abilities were always evident though.

It has been so great that Rohene was able to utilize his talents to build a successful show career, and a career as a choreographer/ coach. His amazing collaboration over the years with Jason Brown will go down in figure skating history. This truth is even more remarkable when you consider how powers-that-be often pushed for Jason to drop both Rohene and his original coach, Kori Ade (very early in his career too).

Love the updated avatar, @La Rhumba.

Now that she has her new hairstyle, I have just realised that Ashlie is the absolute image of a girl I went to school with. 😲

Only a few days after Nationals, and the Top 2 in Junior Ladies and the Junior Men's Champion are straight back into action.

Junior Ladies runner-up Christie Anne SHANNON (East Kilbride) will be competing in Junior Ladies at the 🎅 Santa Claus Cup, in Budapest. She will be joined by Team Ireland skaters Dillon JUDGE (Sheffield), who will be competing in Junior Men, and Conor STAKELUM (Dundee) and Sam MCALLISTER (Sheffield), who will be competing in Senior Men.

All four of them have their Short Programmes tomorrow, and their Free Skates on Thursday.

Meanwhile, both Junior Singles Champions, Elena KOMOVA (Nottingham) and Ed APPLEBY (Romford), will be competing in Seniors at the last Challenger event, the Golden Spin Of Zagreb, in Sisak.

Both have their Short Programmes on Thursday. The Ladies Free Skate is on Friday, while the Men's Free Skate is on Saturday.

Thank you @CaroLiza_fan :giggle:
I really do hope they get the chance to compete at least once Internationally this season, Ashlie & Atl are in such fine form. I'm so gutted Torun was cancelled in January, as it would've been their 3rd time competing there.

And thanks for the updates on our Junior Skaters. (y) Good Luck and safe travels to them all.

BIS released an article today on the Championships but there's no point posting it. All it contains is the bare facts of who won what, no quotes and no Podium pics. Thank god for social media and the skaters themselves posting pics with their trophies, and Phebe Bekker's Mother posted a clip of the National Anthem at their medal ceremony, that's more than we got from BISTV. Plus our views on the Commentators were shared by many on Twitter!
