BV/PCS ratio -- possibly a new way to evaluate judging and other trends?

Since base value is the only objective metric in figure skating, I thought I would combine it with PCS to get a ratio that shows which rely on attempting complex content for most of their points, and which skaters rely on the subjective interpretation of the officials. I think it is quite interesting, and this is something that can be refined. Obviously not perfect, but it is a start. PCS is affected by errors, but if we used two years of data it would smooth much of this out. Maybe a deduction from a fall should come off base value. It's more the outliers that we are looking at anyway. It would be interesting to sort by federation or region maybe, where the athlete trains, etc. Also, I think this information will be a lot more useful analysing the free skate, so let's wait and see what it will show us. The non-qualifiers can probably be excluded as well to get something more meaningful or even just the top 12.

First of all you should reverse the ratio. If you want the ratio to be an indicator of "how much a skater relies on subjective interpretation", I think intuitively a higher number should indicate greater reliance on subjective criteria. Right now you have it reversed.

That being said this is actually a really interesting idea. Though, as you admit, very rudimentary in the form presented. This alone is preliminarily valuable but still easily dismissible. If we could include a more detailed TCS breakdown, for example also tracking GOE-reliance here and include multiple ratios with some sort of aggregate index value it would be fantastic. I imagine it would include specifications of which athletes rely more on which category of PCS!

I do however totally understand why you got no attention for this sort of discussion... I'm sorry about that. I wish we could have a big dialogue about this and develop a unique metric. I don't think comparing purely objective rating with subjective rating is inherently offensive to any skater or nation. I think its very valuable info, and even just very interesting in an of itself as an end!

Good work!

I did not understand the thrust of this "proposal," nor exactly what it is that the OP is proposing. Some skaters earn a lot of base value points for feats of technical derring-do. Some have admirable blade to ice skating skills. Others delight audiences and judges with program s of esthetic merit. Some strive for complementary balance, for others this is not so important.

Well... yes... that's all quite true. Nothing to argue about there.

I don't see what this proves. Maybe that skaters who make more errors get lower PCS? Or that skaters like Kaori Sakamoto will never get less than about 9 average?
