Can Ashley go to Worlds?

I don't know if anybody watched, but ESPN 2 repeated the GPF and Grand Prix Paris yesterday. I caught Ashley's LP from Paris. I have to say that the more I see her the more i like this girl. She seems to love skating, but also seems like a very normal, down-to earth teenager, but still a little more mature off-ice than kimmie. She has huge jumps and very fast spins. I think that if she is clean and bothe marai and caroline fall once she could beat them.

Taped 'em but haven't had a chance to watch. Will pay special attention to Ashley. I don't think I've seen her skate yet.

I saw Ashley and loved her skating. This was the first time I was seeing her in TV compared to youtube............

Watched Ashley on my tape of TEB - really liked her! Great potential here - lots of presence on the ice - and very personable, and mature, off ice as well. I will be paying attention in future.

I rather hope she gets to Worlds, too. She may just slip in under the radar when no one is looking.

Praise to be she is not what one would call 'ballet-like'. She's her own being and she is good. If you've seen one 'ballet-like' skater, you've seen them all and take that literally because they all ape each other. Ashley is her own self. I do hope she gets to Worlds.

Don't know what your definition of "ballet-like" is, but if it is the same definition as mine [precious, pretentious, s-l-o-w, never vivacious or high-energy ], I agree with your post!

well I think that skater who have a lot of flexiblity and artistry are called "ballet-like". naomi nari nam and sasha both skated with a lot of energy and speed (esp. naomi) as youngsters and are both very "balletic" skaters.

Sasha indeed is balletic. She is also very vivacious and energetic--with great artistry and flexibility. Would that all ballet-like skaters were as skilled in these aspects as is Sasha. She's one of my all-time favorites! In my post I was really thinking of the wanna-be (or pseudo) ballet-like skaters. I won't name names!

Not sure what you mean by 'balletic'. Is it the 180 degree free leg in a spiral? That's more pupular in acrobatic dancing. A ballet dancer could easily do that but it's not a big deal as it is in figure skating. Slow extensions and slow pirrouettes get more applause than fast ones. Ballet dancers can do both slow and fast movements to the music. Speed is not of the essence, I presume it is in Figure Skating although it does not show prominently in the PCS categories.

Since the word obviously means different things to different people, maybe it's not really that useful for describing skaters or skating, at least not without further qualification.

Speed across the ice (miles per hour, or feet per second) would primarily be considered under the Power/energy and acceleration criterion of the Skating Skills component.

It's also considered in the grades of execution for all elements that move across the ice (jump entries and exits, step sequences, lifts, etc.) A step sequence could be given -1 GOE just because it lacks power/acceleration and is slow across the ice, and maintaining speed or accelerating can help it earn +1 or +2.

In general, the greater the average speed in this sense throughout the program, the better.

It sounds like you may be referring more to quick vs. slow/sustained rhythm of body movements, strokes/steps, etc. That's kind of quickness is not necessarily preferred per se. But matching the movements to the music is valued, so if the music is quick then quick movements in time with the quick music would be rewarded, and inability to do the steps etc. as quickly as intended would be penalized . . . especially in compulsory dances where such inability could mean failure to execute the right steps on the right beats.

"Variety and contrast" is a criterion under Performance/Execution, so that would reward a skater who shows both quick and sustained movements during the program.

Quick changes of direction are a feature for step sequences.

Also, all else being equal, a spin with fast rotation would generally be preferred over a slow one.
