Is there a limit to how many times someone can use a program throughout their career?

I don't think using Jason as an example is a good one. He's changed a lot of the choreography. And I guess that determines whether I get tired of seeng the same ol' same ol'. And quite frankly your opinion probably has somewhat to do whether you like the song or not. I always said Michelle could skate to the Rice Krispies theme and I would love it - but her East of Eden was just magical. Again, I love the song so that played into my opinion. I'm hoping beyond hope that we never hear a lot of the discordant music being displayed out there this season EVER AGAIN. Other than tangoes, I don't mind hearing workhorses if they're skated to beautifully, with passion and interesting choreo.

Here is my experience with this topic. When Michelle Kwan used Fields of Gold as her exhibition number for two years and many performances, I timidly expressed the thought that it would be nice to see something new.

Hoo boy! I almost got kicked out of the Michelle Kwan fan club. Didn't I know the heart-wrenching back story of the singer, Eva Cassidy, and how much Michelle's program meant to her family? How could I be such an unfeeling and generally despicable wretch? :slink:

Random thought: Romeo and Juliet is often viewed as a timeless love story.

OK, but maybe it's a cautionary tale, too. Think about it. She's 14, he's 15 (I think). The meet one day, get married in secret the next, and then it's double suicide that day after that.

Maybe everyone needs to hit the pause button once in a while. Not everything is the life-shattering event some think it is - even in figure skating. Lord, this is a sport of drama queens and kings.

Math, you made me spit out my coffee. Really laughed at your "unfeeling and despicable wretch" description. I had been listening to Eva Cassidy's albums for some time before Michelle skated to Fields of Gold. She did a beautiful job and is was so poignant for Eva's family. It was also oddly appropriate for Michelle's Olympic gold :cry:quest.

Omg this gave me a thought.

What is they let fans vote for the show program a skater has to perform at a comp like… WTT?

That would be a great way to increase engagement, sorry for the off topic.
Actually something like that already happened. At the first pro show of Yuzuru Hanyu called "Prologue" the audience entering the venue were given light bracelets equipped with a button to change colours, and at some points during the show they were told which program was assigned to which colour and asked to vote what he should skate now by turning on the assigned colour light on their bracelets, and he actually skated the program that won., lol!! AFAIR, the list would change couple of times during the show and between shows.

So the know-how is already there, you just need to find skaters brave enough

We're getting far afield now... but riffing off @Magill post above... the idea that the skater doesn't know what's coming...

I think it would be fun to have an ice dance competition where the skaters don't know the music at all. It would be just like at a social dance, where couples dance to whatever music comes their way.

"Oh sweetheart, they're playing a waltz!" And so... they waltz.

And then, out of nowhere, “Dame tu cosita” starts playing for the most elegant and beautiful skater
At their highest treachery, choreographers even muster the gall for such foolery mid-program. At a recent test skates event, an athlete of particularly stunning proprioceptive talent and artistic elegance began her SP with a delightful interpretation of "Disfruto". Then, for no reason I can identify, it breaks into some sort of abrasive latina club dance. It almost gave me whiplash how suddenly I went from leaning towards my monitor in appreciative focus, to throwing myself back into the chair with disappointment. Skating fans need to get serious about combating foolery in the sport. ISU must implement verified digital-ID program voting (with 55+ age requirement—no zoomers allowed).

There used to be a recurring pro event called "Improv-Ice," which was just like that. The skaters were bot given their music until a random draw was conducted an hour before they had to skate.

I remember one time Surya Bonaly.arrived with a huge duffle bag of costumes pieces of different types. She drew cowboy music. Siure enough, she went in her bag and put together a cowgirl outfit, and was off to the rodeo. (I have always wondered if the gimmick was real or some TV producer's joke on the audience. If the song had been "The Streets of Laredo" with the line, "I can see by your outfit that you are a cow-boy." I would have been suspicious.)

Todd Eldredge drew"Who Let the Dogs Out?" -- and was teased on fan sites under the banner, "Who Let Todd Out?"

For me. it's all the fault of their enabler the priest. He was an adult.
And Juliet's nurse. Ugly old busybody who couldn't stop herself from acting as a romantic go-between for teenagers and otherwise involving herself in the events of the play. A very unsympathetic character. But, I concede, a necessary one for the plot to move along.

But upon first reading, I resolved firmly to never name any future daughters "Nurse." And I'm proud to say I stood by that.

The infamous latin american mix besame mucho/quiero bailar la salsa etc
I seriously hate when skaters say they want to skate to some Latin music and then they choose reggaeton. I'm tired of it. There is so much talent in Latin America and so many genres. Why can't anyone skate to Juanes, Julieta Venegas, Nelly Furtado (she's not Latin American, but she has done music in Spanish and collaborated with Latin American singers), Shakira from the 2000s, Miranda!, Thalía, etc.? When I see Latin American skaters, they often use the same warhorse music we all know in figure skating, and it's so sad. This has nothing to do with the topic, but I always have this on my mind.

We attended that Improv-Ice in Philadelphia, PA (December 2000) & got to see the warm up before the show. Of course we didn't know the music until he actually skated to it, but Todd had a look on his face that seemed to say "What in the world am I going to do with this music?" Brian Orser got to skate to a piece of music that probably would have suited Todd's style (but wouldn't have been a much of challenge for him). Michael Weiss got to skate to "Sex Bomb" & Philippe Candeloro ended up taking off practically all of his costume! Anyway, Todd pulled it off (the program, that is, not Philippe's costume). About a week later, Todd competed in a pro-Am (I believe he debuted his "1492" program there :love2: ). We watched the competition on TV, and I DO remember a Todd fan holding up a sign that said, "Who Let Todd Out?" which HAD to be a reference to his Improv-Ice program!

BTW, a big :thank: to my fellow Todd fan friend Tara who originally posted that video to Youtube!

This would be Sadkova? At least she tried to uplift the audience, while the rest of the women kinda were working in the other direction.
I never thought I'd say this, but I liked Dikidzhi's FS. I guess using ugly covers is the trend of today (never thought I'd say this about Bel Suono), but this is refreshing. Bestemianova is the choreographer. Danny S. fell as he was coming on the ice, and he is pretty good too.

The trick was done for the initial solo part of 2021 Japan Stars on Ice opening program, the music was provided only two hours before the first show, the choreography having to be found by the skater. This skater (guess who) had a costume fitting the music. He got the moves fitting it too. I would add a warning though: Day 1 has never been broadcast; all videos are from subsequent days. But reports from Day 1 were extremely enthusiastic.
