I am excited for him coming back just for the drama factor. I am still gutted for him at the Olympics. It was a case it was a disaster for everyone, but overall I'd give it to Patrick just for the better program and he received less inflation vs Hanyu who had 2 whirlwind seasons of inflation on a upward momentum and ISU seems desperately want to give it to a Japanese to share the wealth. Patrick should just stick with interviewing in French and Cantonese and hire an English Translator (degree in International Relations) just to 'translate' into PC talk. Who knows... Hanyu may not be such a nice guy... he can't be that perfect May be he just talk babyish with a slight stutter and lisp rather than embellished eloquence that always come from his English fan translated interviews.

Hanyu in Japanese: I like Pooh. Fan Translation: Beautiful Man child in touch with his softer charismatic side and to show his fan appreciation by hugging the orange cushy toy.

Personally I welcome Patrick's return just to dampen some of these ridiculous PCS level these youngsters been getting. Just like if Mao returns, it should quash these PCS to something more sensible.

Ngl, os168, I cracked up when reading that Hanyu 'translation'.

However, joking aside, that is one of the reasons I like Team Japan's skaters. They tend to be humble and self-effacing and let the ice speak. Believe me, occasionally too much. Sometimes Dai was so self-critical it distressed me. But at least they don't diss others that I can remember. Whilst I can admire qualities in Chan's skating, his remarks put me off him.

Sure, Patrick isn't the classiest person, but I'm okay with that. What bothers me is that his argument just doesn't really make sense. By skimming Yuzuru's and Javier's performances, watching basically only their jumps, he can tell that their programs are nothing new? Well, duh, if he only watched their jumps, of course it all looks the same. A quad will always be a quad, and a 3A will always be a 3A. I'm not saying that Yuzuru's and Javier's latest LP's aren't similar to Olympic season's (which I think they are indeed very similar), but if Patrick, as he said in the interview, skipped everything but the jumps, then there's no way he can actually tell if they have changed or not.

With that being said, I do like Patrick's skating, and I sincerely hope that he can meet everyone's and his own expectations this coming season.

In answer to the title question of this thread: yes, he can.

As for his comments, it's trash talk and mild compared to what we see in other sports (did any of you see any of the banter in tennis, March Madness or even the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight??). If anything, he's softer in his words than say Trankov.

Well, Yuzuru (an other skaters), have always been friendly to Patrick, but I don´t think any of them could be really "friends" with him, not if they get to know how dismisive he is of them,

And Patrick seems to be very fond of Kathy, aside from the fact that Brian has said he wouldn't coach him because he has to put Javier, Yuzuru and Nam's interests first now.

The mind boggles. Even the compliments he gives skaters comes across as condescending.
As for his comments 'nothing special, not pushing the boundaries' --Patrick, these guys are laying down technical elements you've never done before...and if you didn't watch the programs on fast-forward, you'd see some artistry that might surprise you if you weren't so jaded.
I TRY to like Patrick, some times I succeed in liking his programs. TEB 2013, JO 2014, are brilliant but his attitude bleeds over into how much I can really enjoy his performances.
Will people look back and say ‘This is what it takes to be a champion, and this is what skating is all about'? --Not so sure, certainly not if they read his interviews.

EDIT: reading back on my comment, I may have been too negative. Patrick Chan is not a 'bad' guy, and when he's not competing he seems nice enough...just when he starts talking about his competition he goes all sour-grapes.

Another positive thing about Chan is that he sure gives us skating fans something to talk about in the off-season.

I took a quick look at the past World Championships and other than his 2011 win, his 2012 and 2013 scores would be behind Yuzu and Machida in 2014 and behind Javi and Yuzu in 2015.
Maybe Mrs. P could find the average of Chan's last Season's scores and we could hash it out in numbers. (his last season was a pretty good one.)

Smile. So the real question is, "Who is going to show at Skate Canada against Patrick?" And are they ready to beat him before he's at the top of his game? (Because I have seen a LOT of not-so-hot Skate Canada programs from Patrick, but no one else ranked at the top usually competes there. This season SHOULD be different).

Personally, I think you might want to watch the winning FS from worlds, Patrick. As defined by Wikipedia, "a masterpiece in Chinese classical music. The difficulty of the piece ensures that it can be played almost exclusively by virtuosos."

Absolutely true. I admire every person who is able to reach such a great level as Worlds and Olympics. But...
I don't remember almost any of his programs, I think he just skates the same all the time and he can try how he wants. No matter how much he will be overrated by the judges.

I agree with both of you! After this article by Patrick came out, seems like all hell broke loose in the men's GS forum.

On a more serious note, he's a great skater and all but when Patrick says something ... anything, it sounds offensive; he just has that type of talking attitude. He's also hypocritical by saying "I found that the men’s event was, as I expected, nothing too special. [...] But I think the point, especially for myself, is I Iook to the skaters that are pushing the boundaries.". He's not currently pushing too many boundaries now is he? Patrick wants other skaters to change their styles of skating, yet he doesn't ever change. Does that even make sense? Why would he say something like this if he knew it would come out offensive to the men's field? And by saying "no offence" it's already adding offence to whomever he mentioned.

Man, when I saw how this thread blew up, I thought Patrick had said, "Javier, Yuzuru, and Denis all suck. I'm the only good skater in the universe, and they'll be licking my skating boots when I return."

Turned out to be rather tame as far as trash talk goes. He does come across as uninformed and hypocritical (namely: why criticize the programs if you didn't watch them? And it's a bit weird for Patrick Chan of all people to speak about versatility or skating clean). But though I don't agree with him, I will defend his right to speak his opinion.

Too bad his actual skating isn't interesting to me. His interviews/weird comments are oddly endearing.

I'm sure he's smart but being arrogant does not help with the antipathy he's been getting for the last 2 or 3 years.
