I don't know enough about ice dance to purport to know exactly WHAT I am looking for in a compulsory dance (other than earplugs after hearing essentially the SAME music over and over again! Yikes!) But from what I saw, Belbin and Agosto seemed to have the most energy and "spark", and she has beautiful free leg extension and position. They also looked to be having the most fun...just really expressive during it. Chait and Saknovsky (how the heck do you spell his name??), anyway, they were close in energy, she had slightly lesser positions a few times than Belbin, I think that's why they are second. When it came down to the ones that were lesser known/lesser successful (from about 4th down), they seemed pretty interchangeable to me.

I have been for the first time to watch CD and I am glad I did. I took notes and scrutinized with a Hawk eye. Although I couldn't see how deep the edges were or how correct, as I am not a specialist, you could differentiate several of them, based on very visible errors and wobbles they made:

at the bottom for example:
Romanovskaya lost her rythm, right in front of the judges on the second pattern and she had to do a few small steps to catch up with her partner;
D. Mitchell slipped about 3 times at the end of the 2 pattern, looks like he caught a piece of fabric in his edge from Loren Galler-Rabinovitz;
Kulikova and Novikov's legs touched at the very end;
Chait and Sakhnovsky although energetic and speedy, have a serious distance between each other compared to Belbin & Agosto, Wing & Lowe are cleaner but slower.
Al being said and done, I agree with you, there were about 3 couples very close bunched together in abilities and performance, in positions 6-8, the polish team Kalc & Zych, the ukrainian Golovina & Voiko and Bentley & Fernet from France.
I like the expression of Kerr & Kerr, I think they will become a top 10 team in the close future.
