Christmas Of 1969 | Golden Skate

Christmas Of 1969

That, indirectly, kinda takes me back... I remember watching "Donny and Marie" every Friday night and they always had the Ice Angels (later the Ice Vanities, or it may have been the other way around) doing synchro numbers at the mid-point of the show, but I didn't know that any of the Osmonds themselves actually skated.

Scarily enough, Donny doesn't seem to look all that much different nearly 40 years later...

There's some basic forward stroking, but for the most part they're on two feet all the time. They look really comfortable with what they're doing on two feet though, and there's plenty of variety in the choreography. They probably could do some real skating on one edge of one foot at a time, but not with the same comfort level.

Ice Skating back then was not tinged with cheating judges (although there were some, I guess) so it was the Pat Boone era of America the Beautiful, but there was rumblings going on too. The innocence was disappearing. Blacks, Women's Rights, and gays looking for equality. Guilty minds had a tough time of keeping the status quo.

The Osmunds were competing with the Jackson Five.

But their skating in sync was good wholesome entertainment.

No, this was a year before the group started having hits. At this point, they were still just Andy Williams' golddiggers. Reportedly, it took months of rehearsal for them to get through this routine without one or more of them falling. This probably has something to do with why six years later, Donny & Marie hired a seasoned synchronized team to do all the skating for them on their program...And I thought Utah was supposed to be famous for winter sporting activities.

I didn't know all that! I do remember I watched the Donny & Marie Show when I was little and I had their dolls! Recently, they tried to have another show, but it didn't last. But Donny became a game show host!
