Christopher Bowman Died (1-10-08)

Oh my goodness! What terrible news. I wonder if Toller Cranston has heard about it. Christopher Bowman really caused Toller a lot of grief. He was Christopher's coach a few years ago.

What a talented skater. Toller often thought he was championship material if he could get his life together.

What a shocking and sad day for skating fans. He will be missed a great deal and my thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family.

My heart was in my throat when I read the thread title....

Another taken too soon...

It's just hard to believe, I had a skating friend that meet him on a plane trip when she was a young girl, she said he was really friendly and and she had some great laughs talking figure skating. I wonder how Frank Carrol feels, he coached him from a young boy until he was older and then he changed coaches and went to Toller Cranston. I read in a book that Frank said he was so gifted and had incredible charm and showman ship from the time he was a young boy. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I just found THIS on my homepage. North Hills is near a couple of different rinks (in Van Nuys and Panorama City). I wonder if he was coaching at one of them.

My heartfelt condolences to Chris' family and friends. Chris was always one of my favorite skaters, so entertaining and so much talent. This was truly sad news to see when I woke up this morning.

Such a shame he had so much talent, but his inner demons got the best of him. He could've been the best in the world.

I was a big fan of his back in his amateur days. Have either Frank Carroll or Toller Cranston made any comments? Frank trained him from childhood & the only time I've ever seen Frank lose his temper with a skater was at a practice session during a world championship. He got fed up with Chris, said a few things to him & walked out of the arena. It wasn't long after that that Toller took over for a couple of years. What a sad, wasted talent.

Chris was not a wasted talent. I am talking about his competitive career. National Champion 1989 and 1992, Silver at Nationals 1987 and 1991. Silver at 1989 World Championship, Bronze 1990 World Championship. He finished 7th at the 1988 Olympics and 4th at the 1992 Olympics. I know he had problems with drugs but that should not overshadow his accomplishments.

I think when people say he wasted his talent, they mean that because of his demons he achieved just a fraction of what he might have otherwise. I see him as a figure of classic Greek drama, full of heroic virtues and talents, but undone by a single tragic flaw that kept him from achieving all that he might have, and ultimately ruined his life. The depths to which he had sunk in the least few months have yet to be made public.

I understand what you are saying. I just think that people should know that he was not just a drug addicted figure skater he was much more than that.

So sad.
I have only seen him on youtube but he will definitely be remembered.

PS-When i checked comcast this afternoon the article about his death was above the news about the Patriots, and Marion Jones. go figure.
