Coaching change for Kimmie

I've thought for a while that Kimmie needed a coaching change. I don't think Pam Gregory was pushing Kimmie enough technically. She should have been doing what Evan Lysacek and Frank Carroll have been doing and what Johnny Weir and Galina Zmievskaya appear to be doing: keep working the next difficult element until you get it consistent. She should have been continuing work on the triple axel and 3/3's instead of resting on her laurels. Now, younger skaters are passing her up because they have the technical content she *used* to have.

I hope everything works out great for her. Perhaps a fresh start will be just the ticket...

maybe she's feeling she wants to focus more on skating... and that school can wait? maybe the two together were too stressful for her.

True. and just becasue the courses are online dosen't mean she can take them in florida. My sisters is taking two online classes at college and she has to go into the campus for tests twice a semester. Kinda annoying if you are hundreds of miles away.

I was troubled by this news too....but optimistic because the few pratice reports circulating suggested that a) Kimmie had suffered a sprain during the Fall, b) it was better, and c) she was hitting it all in practice.....

yeah...i do not see anything wrong with kimmie and her coach weighing which combo to put in. It happens all the time. Shen and Zhao did not make up thier minds until minuites before theier LP at Salt Lake if they were gonna do the quad throw or not. I think kimmie would have gone for the loop combo in the LP if she had not fallen. she had nothing to lose.

Good for Kimmie!

I think a change is just what she needs to push her motivation. I really hope everything works out. She's such a great girl and I do love her skating. And who knows what could happen in six weeks. Shizuka was only with Tatiana a short time before winning 2004 Worlds. So best of luck to Kimmie!

I saw Richard Callahan at the EGL regionals with a senior lady skater, but which one I don't know, since we didn't buy a program and I didn't write the names down as they were announced.

Collaghan has done wonders with Hawker.

She landed her first triple at the age of 17 and I believe was still learning flips/lutz at 19/20. None of her harder jumps were consistent until she teamed up with him. She made to the national team at 22 and the rest is history. Obviously, his no-non sense, drill sergeant approach works with Hawker.

I think Kimmie and team have been discussing this as a possibility for months. It's not something that can be arranged on a whim with a top coach. Since Pam and Kimmie seem close, I have a suspicion that she did not discourage Kimmie from this option.

The article does say that this is only definite to World's. I think Kimmie really wants to help the US retain 3 spots for next year.

Something's not working and Kimmie has to see if she just needs intensive short term coaching change to get over the hurdle or if she needs a longer term change or if she's motivated enough to stay in the game while the rest of her life is on hold.

Kimmie doesn't strike me as one to "rest on her laurels." If anything, I think her body betrayed her.

It has been suggested to me by a skating friend, and I tend to agree... that it is likely that U.S. Figure Skating had a leading role in this move by Kimmie... probably had discussions with her camp during nationals. USFS has put it's faith and trust in Kimmie in it's decision to send her to Worlds and this move to the jumpmeister to prepare for the World Championships fits in with their decision. Good luck, you go girl!

Good for you Kimmie!! I am sure Callaghan can help her with jumps! I can't wait to see Kimmie at worlds now!

I hope Alissa Czisny follows Kimmie to Florida. I love them both, and I would love to see both of them back up there in the medals at Nationals together.

Oh my!!!
Good job for her, i thought it would never happen!
I don't know if 6 weeks of new training will be enough though, it seems too little time to fix things. However, if he is a good trainer, he will mainly work on motivation with her.

Thanks for the post sorcerer.
Can't say I'm surprised. I think most of us anticipated this. I'm definitely behind Kimmie. I hope she can have a great turnaround and strong finish at Worlds.

It will be nice to see Callaghan with a contender for a change. I like what he did for Hawker, but she really wasn't a contender. So I think both skater and coach will be happy.

One question: Will Kimmie be moving to the Detroit area? or will she just take master coaching from him part time?

Joe

Smart move for Kimmie to see what Callaghan can do for her before Worlds'. Lots of skaters hunker down with 'name' coaches before big competitions, to help give them an edge.

My concern with Richard Callaghan moving to Florida is - will Lesley Hawker move with him or train in Canada? Her husband lives in Barrie/Toronto area and as it is - she doesn't see him much except for weekends.

Fedor Andreev says the motivation for his return to skating was the energy and dynamics on the ice of Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir - and the other ice dancers he trains with. Will Fedor want to leave that motivating environment to move to Florida as well?

Strange Callaghan would leave Detroit after so long - but then after this winter of snow snow snow -- who wouldn't:rock:

The only thing I don't like about Callahan is that he sometimes just seems so detached from his skaters. It didn't bother Todd, but I am not sure that will work for Kimmie. I am glad to hear that Kimmie will be spending some time working with Todd. That sounds good. I love it when great skating is passed on to the future.

My bet is Lesley will come back to Canada. Florida is too far away from where her hubby is. Isn't he working for a federal government lab? Well, there is Mariposa, Toronto Curling, Cricket and Skating Club and many others where she can train.
