Cohen "News"

Is Sasha a late bloomer too? Didn't she fall at Nationals last year too? And the Olympics? And Worlds? I don't think we can judge Kimmie quite yet. We saw with the Olympics and Worlds that multiple falls won't land you off the podium. More on topic. I think Alyssa has the most beautifuls spirals and spins of any American woman EVER. Darn those jumps!!!
I think the secret with MK and IS was they had good technique. Not sure if anyone, except Shiz or Fumie, could match that today.

Nah, in fact I'd say Cohen used to be an early bloomer. Remember the 03 and 04 seasons? But recently I think it's a little more balanced. Basically everyone was out of it last season by Worlds.

She didn't fall at Nats 06 but she did stumble once and I think (2-footed?) another.

I agree for Kimmie- and remember what I said before the season began- I wouldn't be surprised if she was off for the whole season. But as we saw with Arakawa and Slutskaya (and I think we're now seeing with Ando) you can never count someone out based on one not-so-good season (or maybe even two). Just remember that whenever you see Kimmie. ;)

Well, only if your name is Sasha Cohen or Michelle Kwan. I think in the case of the newbies they can't afford to even have one fall because their other elements won't "back them up" as much. Especially in the case of Kimmie- if she's on, she's a GM contender. If she's off, she could be off the podium.

I found this blurb while browsing AP photos over at the CBS sportsline website:

Figure skater Sasha Cohen practices Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006, in Boston for a Sunday event. With the U.S. Figure Skating national championships less than two months away, 2006 champion Cohen has yet to decide if she'll attempt to defend her title. (AP Photo/Lisa Poole)

(emphasis added)

There are also a couple pictures of Cohen and Meissner at a press conference earlier today so I guess she said something to that effect at that press conference. So if she's undecided now and it's December, we should all take that as a resounding NO. (Unless she's now pulling a Kwan :p in which case anything is possible  )

I don't think Michelle Kwan was ever undecided about Nationals, or Worlds if qualified. I think Michelle never committed to teh GP series, right? She took off 2 years, right? In 2003 she competed in one event, and then took off 2004 and 2005 to rest her injury?
I remember, because I had tickets to see Sarah and then Sarah pulled out and Kwan filled in.
I could speculate and say that I don't feel SAsha will be at Natls. Just a feeling. Hope she proves me wrong cuz I want to see her vs. Kimmie rematch.

Me, too. It was in my hometown (Spokane, the Skating Capital of the Northwest ) There were big billboards of Sarah all over town. Then when she had to withdraw there was a big concern that there would be poor attendance without their Marquee lady.

But fortunately they were able to get Michelle to step in and same the day. Plus Jenny Kirk and Ann Patrice MacDonough did well, too. And I think this was Brian Joubert's first win in an International event.

AND we got to see the first two triple Axels by ladies in a decade (Yukari Nakano and Ludmilla Nelidina). So it turned out to be a great competition, even without the Olympic gold medallist that everyone was hoping to see. :)

By the way, when I was in Spokane over the summer they were displaying big posters of Sasha, advertising Nationals.

I think people forget that Kimmie finished 6th at the Olympics, and that was her first Senior championship event. I think that is pretty remarkable in itself.

Cohen undecided on whether to compete at Nationals
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Translation: We'll use her name to sell tickets, even though there's about a snowball's chance in hell she'll actually be competing. :chorus:

Well, that was back in the summer wasn't it? Anyone know if they're still using her picture now?

You are correct Fossi. Michelle was always intent on going to Nats and Worlds ... it was just the GP that she chose to skip.
I would also say that I doubt we will see Sasha at Nats this year.

And how many followed Michelle into the no more GPs?

What we see today (Dec.10) will be Sasha LIVE and it will answer everyone's questions about is she prepared(?) is it likely that she will go to Nats(?)and most of all, Is she really interested in becoming a champion other than Queen of Cheesefests?

As much as I love Sasha, I am really more interested in whether Johnny, who could become a champion {even in faces of Joubert Oda and Lambiel) and whether he will show us that he is trying.

Right, I think that was it. It was just those darn Olympics that she was so vague about until late 2005 (typical her). But did that approach really work? She was always able to coast through Nats but seemed to be getting progressively worse at Worlds to the point where she was just off the podium at Worlds. You can argue that 4th is still decent out of 20 or 30 or whatever but the fact is by Kwan's standard that is not good at all. It was her first OTP finish in over 10 years, wasn't it? In other words, if Cohen wishes to take the same approach she needs to learn from MK.

As for marshall's indicating whether Cohen is prepared or not, it depends on what she does. I think it will say next to squat.

I think the difference here is unlike us "armchair fans" Cohen (and probably the other skaters as well) seems to be taking this seriously as a competition. In other words, I get the impression she categorizes this as a real competition so in other words what she skates here would count as "competitive programs". However, we just see it as regular exhibition programs (after all, we're not the ones having to go out there and skate  ) and I bet the others will be taking this as an opportunity to refine for nationals.

Well if she falls in the "LP" I'll believe she is taking it as a serious comp. sorry

I think it's fairly obvious that what was making things tough for Kwan was the hip injury, and that had more to do with her problems adjusting to CoP than anything else. Therefore, I don't think Michelle's experience has any bearing on what Cohen does or doesn't do.

If Cohen has half a brain in her head, she 'll skip Nationals this year because it would be a disaster for her to compete. It is possible the USFS has asked her not to 'withdraw' until the last possible moment so as not to adversely affect ticket sales.
