I am wondering when the predictions are going to start for the competitions?

does checking the mean event total really work? I used to fiddle around those stats in skating scores, but I ended up getting worse in the rankings..

Average scores are usually a good place to start, but definitely not the be-all and end-all.
If you have better results when not analysing things too closely and going by general impression, that's great too.

It's all just supposed to be good fun in the end, isn't it?
