Compulsory Dance

Both P/B and D/W outclassed the rest of the field. I thought both scores should have been higher.
D/W!!

My impressions watching on streaming video...

Chong/Gfeller:
Clean skate but no tension or snap in the delivery.

Wester/Barantsev:
Clean skate but again no extra snap or energy that would really put it over the top. She has a gorgeous gold dress with cut out back.

Crone/Poirier:
Wow!! This team attacks!! It may have been tango-like but there is such strength in their skating-- absolutely no fear. They deserve to be way out in front. I would have had them in 3rd place.

Bobrova/Soloviev:
What elegant long lines and good movement across the ice. They are not quite as hardline as Crone/Poirier in their delivery but I thought it was a strong dance. They were surprised and shocked in knc. I thought they deserved higher- definitely at least over Wester/Barantsev.

Navarro/Bommentre:
Good strong dance with nice edges but not quite as sharp or tight in formation as it could be. But I'm glad that they placed well.

Pechalat/Bourzat:
Fast, good lean and line. They are so elegant and stylish. Good dance. You can tell in the knc that Fabian wasn't too impressed with the marks. He said to Nathalie- it's ok but not great. :)

Davis/White:
I'm horribly biased here- so I don't know that I can judge them clearly. All I can say is HOT, HOT, HOT. You can tell that they mean business this year!! Interesting arm details going into the cross roll section. Not sure I love the little flares on Charlie's pants- I think it might break the line of his leg a bit. Meryl was gorgeous and he so looked the part of the matador with the slicked back ponytail. They were fast and strong though at one point during the second cross roll Meryl looked like she made the edges almost too deep so that she almost went slightly off kilter but was able to save it. (Will have to see if again if I'm right about that.) So happy for them that they're leading at this point. Whew!!

Gorshkova/Butikov:
Good lean and strength in the dance but not as charismatic after the others in this top flight.

 so true! fun to watch, too!

and I hope they never get rid of the CDs... just because some people are bored with it, I think it's the most technical of the events and you can really tell the difference between the best of the best.

I agree with the comments about N&B and with hoping that the CD is never entirely done away with. As it is I felt that for major events such as Worlds the ISU should have kept two especially after COP was implemented.

I love watching CD's with the edging and precision needed to properly skate them. I've always been disappointed that in the U.S. the only time we get to see CD's is during the Olympics.

museksk8r, I wouldn't mind if the final standings echo your wishes (though the first two spots are a toss up for me).

.

me too - for a long time, this is why I didn't follow dance - but thanks to Youtube, and commentary on boards like this, I'm totally hooked.

I'm disappointed but still hopeful for Brobrova and Soloviev. They moved up 3 spots from the CD to the FD at worlds last year and had a similar deficit between them and N/B in the CD.

I must be getting a little better at ice dance judging...while I was watching on icenetwork, I was calling the placements as they skated and I was getting it right! I thought Bobrova/Solokiev were sloppy and I wasn't surprised at all with their marks. I liked P/B but didn't think they had the expression and the Paso Doble feel that D/W had. I know I'm biased for D/W but I honestly thought they definitely had the best out there tonight and they beat P/B in both the TES and PCS. Would have been happier if their scores had been higher, for both them and P/B actually. When the last couple came off the ice I thought to myself "5th" and that's exactly where they ended up.

So happy for Meryl and Charlie. They were ready to compete!!

So I was right that 1-2 would be really close, but to be honest I had predicted P/B to win the CD, with D/W second. For me as a big D/W fan, it's a pleasant surprise.

Really enjoyed Crone/Poirier, regardless of the slight tango feel to it. They will definitely be vying for the bronze. In that battle, I don't know who I want to come out on top; C/P or N/B.

I haven't had the opportunity to see much of C/P but it's one thing to do well in the CD and quite another to sustain that level in a FD. They seem a little immature to me yet. I'm pulling for Nav/Bom...they are just so smooth and a joy to watch.

Crone/Poirier are normally weaker in CD's. Even in junior competitions , they usually moved up after the CD's. They would have had a ticket to senior worlds last year if they weren't coming from way behind after the compulsories. That is the only reason they finished behind Weaver/Poje and McCurdy/Coreno at the last nationals. They actually beat both those couples in the FD there.

C/P always did well at Lake Placid in CD,either 1st or 2nd. Not surprised to see them place well

Has White grown much taller or is it just because of the costume? I'm surprised he's still growing...

Why? Charlie's only 21. My husband grew 2 inches between 20 and 24. My youngest son, the same. My father grew 5" after he left high school.

BTW, I think wearing the flamenco costumes and including Flamenco moves in the Paso may have been a bad choice for P&B...just as the tangoish feel to Crone & Poirier was not a good thing.

Meryl has really improved her makeup this year. And her facial expressions and their interaction is much improved. What's scary, is they said in their interview that they can skate that with more speed and power. A good thing, because the 34's is about where worlds 6th through 10th is in scoring in the CD.

ponytails are gross? lots of ice dancers wear them in their careers.

I didn't recognize Davis & White in the pics I've seen at first... craziness :)
