The CD will be the Viennese Waltz. It will be streaming live at 6:30 Eastern Standard Time on Ice Network on Friday.
Here's the reference file on the Viennese.

With Domnina and Shabalin and Belbin and Agosto both here and both seeking remedial, redemptive coaching from Linichuk & Karponosov, this is going to be interesting. In the CD, we have the royal pair of waltz and extension, Domnina and Shabalin, vs a very much improved Belbin and Agosto. Still, I would expect D&S to win the CD.

B&A have owned the OD up till last year, when they struggled to get a handle on what a US champion's folk OD should look like. This year, a glance at the dance protocols (not to mention the skating videos) from Skate America will show you that B&A arrived there with an OD that was really not up to what it will be later in the year. For one thing, the levels should go up. For another thing, I would expect that there would be more tap dancing in an OD they have titled Tap Dance. B&A totally understand the rhythms of the 20's, 30's and 40's. If you have any doubts, check out their Girls, Girls, Girls/5 months OD. I expect to see their Tap OD much improved. The question is, how much improved in 2 weeks, which includes travel time?

Meanwhile, Domnina announced in an article that they will be skating a waltz for the OD. I hope she's joking. Waltz is so not the rhythm of the 20's, 30's, or 40's, particularly when the ISU regs cite that the presentations should not be 'ballroom'. They just weren't romantick times. The 20's were a time when young women cut off their hair, shed 30 pounds of excess skirts and whale bone corsets, and celebrated. The 30's were the times of the Depression when dancing seemed to be trying to prove that if you just smiled and played happy music that things would improve. The 40's were the times of war, with young people dancing to forget they might be soon called on to die. Yes, people waltzed in all those eras, but there was no characteristic waltz of the era. Waltzes were times to catch your breath and maybe converse a bit.

Meanwhile, Tanith and Ben's FD is the highest scoring one of the year (a complete turn around from their former record, and showing a definite difference in the Linichuk coaching methods vs. the Shpilband).

While D&S and B&A may be competing with each other, they can't forget that the ever exciting, crowd-pleasing and athletic team of Khokhlova and Novitski who are the reigning Russian champions, and who have done something Domnina and Shabalin have never done, win a World medal. The rhythms of the OD are just made for them and their style, including the athletic swings, lifts and near-throws. I can't wait to see their OD this year. K&N will be playing to win it all. However, the tech panels have been very stingy with levels in step sequences. They may suffer in that respect because they haven't had the most complex sequences as early in the season as some teams. However, they have been improving leaps and bounds (literally, as I think about it).

So stand in line, if you have to, to view this competition. It will be a barn burner at all levels.

1 Kaitlyn WEAVER / Andrew POJE CAN 1

Weaver and Poje are another American/Canadian couple. Based on the silver medal of Crone / Poirier at Skate Canada, they will be looking to put out a good showing here, but I fear that third at Canadian Nationals is the best they will achieve. She has long, lovely lines, and the Viennese is a relatively easy CD. They may score well in it.

4 Xiaoyang YU / Chen WANG CHN 2

The Chinese have three couples here because they get an extra slot for holding the competition. The Chinese champions in dance are Yu & Wang. All 3 couples are coached by the same coach. They used to all be choreographed by Genrikh Sretenski (Part of the Russian 3rd place team in the 1980's with Natalia Annenko). It is interesting that 2 of the couples are now choreographed by Shpilband & Zoueva. The three Chinese couples constitute a third competition within the competition here, because it is a mini-Chinese nationals. Huang and Zheng were the 2007 Chinese champions, but only finished second this year. They are also getting the Zoueva choreography. Guo and Meng finished 4th at nationals, but they would be the up and comers of the three teams as they have only been paired for a couple years. And they apparently crashed and burned in the FD at nationals. They were second in the CD, 3rd in the OD, for fourth overall.

Thank you so much Doris. You rule!

This is the most exciting grand prix event as far as ice dancing is concerned. I will be glued to TV at midnight.

There needs to be a smilie for sekret sources, because I have just received news from one!

DomShab's programs are apparently not ready for competition. I'll be interested to see how this plays out at CoC, and to see if B/A's programs have improved.

Wonderful as always Doris, you rock!! :agree:

You know I could have sworn that I read somewhere what K/N's program music was going to be but it didn't stick in my mind what it was and now I can't find that info anywhere. Was I just imagining that or are they another team that wants to sit on their music selections until the last minute?

Well, DomShabs were behind B/A with the Linichuk learn to skate course. And Maxim's knee was only 70% or so in July. Their programs could well not be what they want.

But if so, why haven't they withdrawn? Hard to say.

I thought B/A's OD was what Wikipedia would call a 'Stub'.

Hah!!!

Found it. I knew I wasn't imagining that I'd read it somewhere.

BTW - Khohlova-Novitski's FD is from Paganini's caprices and Rachmaninov "Themes of Paganini" - aim is more relational, lyrical skating (less "acrobatic").
Tarasova assisted with music choice.

This was reported by Maureen Diffley in October on Skatefans newsgroup.

Thanks missysays!

Interesting that they are trying to look more like everyone else, which is what I assume 'less acrobatic' & 'more relational' means.

Heeeee!!! Whatever it means- I'm so excited for all of the major programs to finally be performed so we can really compare/contrast. Yayyy!!!!

But I do think it's interesting that they are moving away from what made them really stand out last season and pulled them out of the middle pack of skaters. Only time and this next competition will tell if that strategy paid off.

It is interesting that they would move away somewhat from what really made them so successful last season. I wasn't looking for a "clone" (for a lack of better words) of last years FD, but still in that same style generally. I'm excited to see whether this will pay off for them or not. Will it backfire or not; we'll find out this weekend.

And probably very smart (if they can back it up with their skating). The acrobatics made them stand out but also brought lots of (justified imho) criticism that they were more like jumpless pairs than ice dancers.
Sooner or later they have to show they can ..... you know .... dance. The acrobatic stuff should be kept to a minimum to spice things up (when appropriate and left out altogether when inappropriate) or it'll define them and they'll sink in the rankings.

Oh don't get me wrong, ITA with what you said. They did go overboard with the acrobatic stuff IMO, but still they were very successful with it. I am excited to see the more "dancey" side of their skating.

IMO what they are trying to do is show a different side of themselves to the judges - you know, so that they don't get criticized for being one-dimensional, all their programs look the same, etc. They want to show variety of expression and interpretation. I think that's a good idea. Probably next year they will do something more dramatic - for the olympics.

I have no doubts they will pull it off - Jana especially is the best dancer currently competing - I mean in the way she moves her body to express the emotion of the music. I am looking forward to great things from them.

And to me - they will always stand out from the pack - they have that IT factor - that elusive quality that just draws me in and makes me watch.

Good luck to them!

That's an interesting point about K/N. They were overtaken by both V/M and D/W in 2007 with a "less acrobatic" program. While I found their 2008 program to be quite interesting, it was easy for me to spot their weaknesses despite the fact that this program caught the judges' eyes. But all those acrobatic moves will only get you so far. It will be interesting to see if this strategy is a wise one. I really don't think they are strong enough.
