:Video of a special interview with professional figure skater Daisuke Takahashi to celebrate the 800th issue of Kateigaho.
Daisuke Takahashi, who has always pioneered new paths in the world of figure skating, talks in his own words about his congratulatory message for the 800th issue of Kateigaho, memorable features from past Kateigaho shoots, his feelings at the time, and a message about his future activities.
"It'll all work out" mindset - figure skater Daisuke Takahashi follows his own path without fear of failure
2024/09/01
"I want kids to have the mindset of 'it'll all work out' and challenge themselves to do things they're interested in," says Takahashi (Nagasaki Shimbun, Morimachi, Nagasaki City)
The figure skating ice show "Prince Ice World" (sponsored by Nagasaki Shimbun and others) will be held for the first time in Nagasaki City on January 18th and 19th next year. The venue will be Nagasaki Stadium City, which will be completed this fall. Figure skater Daisuke Takahashi, who will be appearing in the show, visited Nagasaki Shimbun and talked about the appeal of skating and ice shows.
"I started skating when I was 7 years old, in the second grade of elementary school. My mother's acquaintance played ice hockey, and I happened to go to the skating rink. I also watched figure skating and was moved by the jumps. There were so many movements and sounds I'd never seen before. I've been crazy about skating ever since."
■I was a sensitive child
"Actually, I wasn't good at school as a child. Maybe I was sensitive, but I couldn't fit in with the group. But through skating, I gradually gained confidence. I messed up my tricks and fell many times, but strangely, I didn't feel scared. It was just fun.
Even so, when I became a junior high school student, there were times when I thought I wanted to quit. I wanted to play more. But at that time, I got appendicitis. I think I was lucky. Just when I wanted to quit, I was unable to skate due to illness and injury. By the time I recovered, I really wanted to skate."
■Pure enjoyment
"I'm always excited to see an ice show in a new place. I think the people of Nagasaki don't often have a chance to see skating in person, so I hope they enjoy it. I want to give my best performance.
This time, I will be performing in ice dancing. My partner and I were in charge of the choreography. The theme is "light and shadow" with white and black costumes. It expresses the humanity and conflicts within ourselves. Depending on the situation, the light or shadow becomes stronger. I want even those who are new to the show to simply enjoy it."
■"It'll work out"
"The words I want to tell children are "It'll work out." There are many things that make you anxious when you think about them, and many things that you don't understand even after thinking about them. Just try it first, and if it doesn't work, you can think about it later. Even if you don't achieve your goal, you can start again from there. Before competitions, I always changed my mindset to "It'll work out."
The people around you will help you more than you think. Rely on adults more, don't be afraid of failure, get a variety of experiences, and find your own path."
Pro skater Daisuke Takahashi makes his debut on the silver screen. The expressiveness he cultivated on the silver screen impressed the director.

Daisuke Takahashi appearing in a film set in his hometown, Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture.
Professional figure skater Daisuke Takahashi (38) will make his screen debut as an actor in the film ‘Kura no Aru Machi’, which is set in his hometown of Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture. He took part in the filming, which ran until 11 August. Director Emiko Hiramatsu praised the film, saying: “I imagined that Takahashi-san, who has been active as an expressive person on the ice, would express himself richly and act in front of the camera as well, and I expected to see something wonderful. And I was right.” Even though the stage has changed from the ice to the silver screen, his power of expression is still strong.
[…]
He was offered the job around November last year. “I love entertainment and wanted to take on more and more challenges that would broaden my horizons, and the timing was right. I thought I would never get a chance like this again’, he reveals.
Differences in expression with figure skating.
Takahashi says: “Figure skating uses the whole body to communicate to people at a distance, whereas films are expressed through detailed facial expressions and vocal tones, so I felt it was completely different.” However, he says, “I hope that the experience I have gained will be a positive one, as it is the same in conveying my own image to others”.
“The role is a difficult one, as the character has a variety of emotions but does not show them too openly. The director told me to leave it as it is, but while watching the performances of the other actors around me, I thought about it and tried to be natural. I don't know what the right answer is, but I'm looking forward to seeing how I will appear in the film”, he said with a smile.
On the other hand, as for the film set in his hometown, he says: “The production itself is a wonderful thing, a memory that I will remember for the rest of my life. The story conveys the beauty of Kurashiki's scenery and the humanity of the people”. In the future, he intends to try various other things if he gets the chance, while keeping figure skating at the core of his work.
Surprise fireworks as a subject.
Director Hiramatsu had a hard time choosing the right person to play the role of the curator, who has a key presence on the adult side and a warmth that is at the same time close to the feelings of the young people. At that time, she saw Mr Takahashi in a TV interview and thought, “Here he is!” When she gave him a brief explanation of the feelings and settings for each scene, she said, “I thought it was great that he understood so much and so quickly”. Regarding her impression of Mr Takahashi's acting and his sense as an actor, she said: “I would definitely like to work with him again if I have the chance. That is the whole answer”.
The film was inspired by the fact that director Hiramatsu's classmate Kazushi Watanabe, a self-employed businessman, and others set off fireworks from Mount Ashitaka in the city in response to the new coronavirus disaster.
In 2020, following the decision to cancel summer festivals in the three primary school districts around Ashitaka-yama, Mr Watanabe made a proposal at a community council meeting of the three school districts, asking if something could be done for the children and the local community, as all children's events would be cancelled. After coordinating with the neighbourhood associations, the City Hall, fire department and police, they launched about 1,000 fireworks in 30 minutes each in August 2020 and 2021.
Mr Watanabe is enthusiastic about the film, saying, ‘I want to tell the whole country and the world that the film is filled with the thoughts of the local community and people who launched the secret and surprise fireworks in the Corona Disaster. As for Mr Takahashi, he added: “He is a very important person for Kurashiki. I can only thank him for accepting the offer. He plays the role of a conduit between the children and the local community, and I think the more people like him there are, the more the community will thrive.”

A preview screening of the completed film will be held in Kurashiki City in March next year, followed by an advance screening in Kurashiki in July and a nationwide release in August.

The judging criteria was “works that show new possibilities for tiles and are full of originality”.
:Daisuke Takahashi: ‘How comfortable...’ Self-designed fully renovated property selected as Finalist Excellence.
[ 16 Sep 2024 16:15 ]
On 16 September, Daisuke Takahashi (38), a professional figure skater and bronze medallist in men's figure skating at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, participated as an instructor in a skating class organised by sponsor Sky Court at KOSE Shin-Yokohama Skate Centre in Yokohama City.
He gave passionate instruction on the ice for about one hour to 95 primary school children. The class was divided into five classes, in the form of beginner to advanced level. “There was quite a wide range of participants, from those who skated to those who were new to skating. With the help of the assistants, I was able to go around for a bit of time in all the classes. Everyone was very enthusiastic about it and it was a lot of fun.”
On the same day, it was announced that the fully renovated property produced by Mr Takahashi had been selected as a finalist in the residential category of the Design Award 2024 organised by Nagoya Mosaic Industry Co. The extraordinary space and the use of tiles were highly evaluated, and the work was selected as one of the 15 works out of 436 total entries.
This is a project that he was working on as a designer for the third installment of the "D-Color" project, which he leads as a total coordinator. He took on the challenge of renovating a 1R type property in a prime location in Akasaka, Minato-ku, with the concept of ``Kakomi'' and aimed to create a space with a sense of freedom and no pressure. Takahashi says: “I was very happy and it gave me some confidence to be appreciated.”
As for his particular focus, he confidently states, ``The target group were women. We were concerned with how comfortable they can be in terms of things like plumbing and daily activities. The same goes for color, and I also thought about creating a space where they can feel comfortable when they return home.''
[Figure skating] Daisuke Takahashi's accomplishment! Design property is now "15 out of 436": ‘It gave me a little confidence’.
[16.09.2024 16:14]
Pro figure skater Daisuke Takahashi (38) was delighted with his ‘15/ 436’ success on 16 January.
The renovation property he designed in collaboration with Sky Court (Shinjuku, Tokyo), which manages condominiums, was selected as an excellent finalist in the Design Award 2024 (organised by Nagoya Mosaic Industry).
Fifteen finalists were selected from a total of 436 entries. The work was a renovation plan for a one-room apartment for one person in the city centre, and was titled ‘Akasaka no kokori-ie’ (The caged house in Akasaka).
When Takahashi received the good news, he said: “I didn't intend to do it that way, but as a result, I was evaluated from that direction, which gave me a bit of confidence. I was very particular about everything,” he smiles. He continued: ‘Our target group were women. How comfortable can they live? In the small space, I created a colour scheme so that no matter how we partitioned it, it wouldn't feel oppressive. It was quite difficult to combine tiles, but I came up with several colouring patterns. I think Japanese houses don't use many colours, so when I went overseas, I saw a lot of different colours being used, so I thought, ‘It would be nice to have a one-room like that’’, he revealed.
On this day, he took part in the company's skating class at the KOSE Shin-Yokohama Skate Centre. He taught 95 children, from beginners to experienced skaters, the joy of skating. In front of the children with experience, he performed spins as requested and said: “It's refreshing to be in contact with children who have never skated before. I would be happy if they feel the appeal of skating through this opportunity. In terms of spreading the word, it's the first time they come into contact with that world, and each person has their own opportunity to go down different paths. class=y2iqfc>For children who have already started skating, I think it becomes more and more difficult as they get older, but they should just enjoy it while they are young. I think the more happy memories you have, the longer you can continue. It was a lot of fun," he said with a smile. [Wataru Matsumoto]
Design Award 2024 Photo contest of examples of workmanship organised by Nagoya Mosaic Industry, a leading tile manufacturer in Japan. This is the ninth time it has been held. Entries are divided into residential and non-residential categories. Leading Japanese architects and others serve as judges. The application period was 22 Jan - 31 May 2024. The judging criteria are “works that show new possibilities for tiles and are full of originality”. Judging is conducted anonymously, and the jury decides on the overall evaluation.
He also taught basics and spins, and said: “I'm not that good at spins, but I taught them how to make them look good.” As for the ‘appeal’ of spinning, he laughed and said, “I don't think it's fun” and added, “It's the hardest part and takes a lot of energy. The more you practise, the better you get. I think spinning is something you have to do steadily.”

On a completely different note:
Shōgun, a highly critically acclaimed historical drama television series based on the 1975 novel by James Clavell, produced for Hulu, just won4Emmy’s at the 76th Emmy Awards (edit: apparently Shōgun's first season won 18 Emmys out of the 25 it was nominated for, setting a new record as the most awarded single season of television in Emmy history!) The series also held this year’s top spot with the most Emmy nominations.
You might wonder why I’m posting this here – well, Tokuma Nishioka, who performed in “Hyoen 2019 – Like the moonlight” and “Luxe 2021” is part of the Shōgun cast and was present at the ceremony to accept the awards together with the cast and production team (driving home the fact that Hyoen, in addition to having big names and masters of their respective crafts like Kenji Kawai, Ichikawa Somegorō VII (now: Matsumoto Kōshirō X) or Amon Miyamoto on its staff, has also always employed acting talents, who are hired for high-profile projects) – here’s a video of the team accepting the most prestigious award for “Best Drama Series”.
