Dance - Free Dance

Russia had only one medal last year because they completely ruled every competition (baring the ladies) at the Olympics. When you have won the past 2-3 World Championships and you win Gold at the Olympics then you retire... The Russians will be ready to dominate once more come Vancouver.

NOOOO! The Frenchies .24 points from a medal. Oh well, they need to come back next year and they will finally get it... maybe... :(((( They skated a better FD than B/A, it's a shame. If they just had a French judge here! Or if B/A weren't overscored in the OD!

Congrats to the medallists - same exact podium as last year. I really don't like Den/Stav's FD this season. Innovative stuff, but pretty yucky and off-putting and abrasive, IMO. I guess it's in their style, and it's a nice comeback after their inexplicable 193 total at Euros.

Also sad for D/L - I thought this was their year to win Gold! I wish they could have. "At Last" is a beauty and they skate with such passion.

Also nice to see the Russians only in 5th. No Russian medals at Worlds this year!!!! Crazy how the figure skating world has been turned on its head.

On another note, SO EXCITING that V/M and D/W finished in 6th and 7th respectively. I thought they might be stuck behind K/N (who are great, but not as skilled) or some other teams, but the judges gave them great scores that they deserve. What young talent we have in ice dance these days. I hope they'll be Top 2 by Vancouver.

Wow - yet another nail biter. I love this year's wordls! Thanks Rosaleen for the PBP. Yeah Denk/STav!!!! Congrats to the rest!

I can't believe B/A pulled off the Bronze! Denkova and Stayviski are know two time World Champions. I feel bad for D/L they have a quality and chemistry unmatchable.

No surprise here, but I was really hoping for D/L to win that elusive gold medal. Oh well, good for them with a strong silver. B/A were lucky to hold onto bronze by the skin of their teeth. Thrilled for V/M finishing a strong sixth at their very first senior worlds. Good result also for D/W. Colour me surprised to see Dom/Shab in a distant 5th, even though I think that's pretty much where they rightfully belong, I was almost sure the judges were going to elevate them to the podium this season.

I guess the backlash against Dom/Shab and swirling rumors of predermined podium finishers before worlds really did this pair in.

Perhaps true. One thing about this dance event, unlike other years, was that though I sometimes would not have done as the judges did (for example, I would have given D/L the gold), I do think they judged it on the actual skating they saw before them. Their opinion was just a bit different than mine, LOL. I found it rather encouraging.

I was very happy fore Virtue-Moir - they was really greate!
And i think, that Delobel-Sholfender deserve medal - it was best skating from them in this season.
As for Domnina-Shabalin - Gorshkov must thinking, what he can say or not. Maybe guse must changed there coach

Thank you so much once again for your report. Of course I love the gushing about both D/L and V/M....it was a good year for me as a Canadian viewer as I could honestly say they had my favorite programs of the season. Valse Triste, in particular, is a classic for the ages. It is simply a stunning piece of work and everything ice dance should be about, IMO. I also love At Last, which I've preferred to the overwraught FD of Denk/ Stav all season. I can see the merits of the Bulgarian's program, don't get me wrong, but as a whole I just don't find it as pleasing. I too have been wondering about the lack of chemistry between B/A in recent competitions. I found it noticeable in their OD here. It's kind of making Tanith almost over-emote outwards to the audience while it's like Ben's almost not there. I really have liked this team in the past and hope for better things next season.

One of the reasons why the judging turned out as it did was the composition of the judging panel: AUS, BUL, CAN, CHN, CZE, GER, ISR, ITA, JPN, LTU, POL, USA.

There was no Russian judge on the panel, and the one SSR judge (LTU) has often been a maverick who doesn't side with the other SSR judges, and the Israeli judge is British. There was also no French judge.

Under the circumstances, with no discernable 'bloc', it isn't that surprising that DomShabs was left out in the cold, especially since their skating was a bit on the lackluster side. They were better in the early season, where they did well under judging panels more oriented towards the East. [CoC: 3 Russians on the panel--RUS, UZB, ARM; CoR: 3 Russians on the panel--RUS, AZE, UZB; Euros: 2 Russians--RUS, AZE plus Yuri Balkov]

The people most surprised by the results were those who thought Europeans was an indication of how Worlds was going to turn out. I always felt that European gold was DelShoes big consolation prize for being continually stiffed at Worlds. And Euros has not always been a competition where DenSta have shone, so their 3rd place there I thought was not particularly important.

One other comment about DelShoes: while the Japanese audience was extremely and enthusiastically receptive to all the skaters, they didn't give warm applause to DelShoes. The same thing happened in Calgary last year. I think the missing ingredient in their skating is the complete disconnect between the two of them when they are skating. They do not relate to one another at all, so their FDs tend to look like a technical exercise, and the judges penalize them for it. Where all the other top 5 teams got a minimum of 8.00 on the IN component, DelShoes got 7.96.

I was surprised that B/A won bronze, but what saved them was their exceptional performance in the OD. Their FD probably still needed another month of solid work, but it was much better than it had been, even at 4CC.

I think if the judging panel had been different (more like Euros), I think the results would have been very different, with B/A off the podium and DomShabs on. But either way, DelShoes would likely have been stiffed again.

I think the bulgarians and the french (in the FD) were the best ...SO i am very happy and a little sad at the same time. Actually i am surprised only from the placement of the bulgarians (and a little bit about Dom/S) Den/S deserve to win this championship 200% but to win twice the world tittle, even with a bigger margin then last year, for a country with no power at all in the figure skating world it is a miracle and they are True Champions. I am so happy that the backstage game didn't affect them this time.
And Maxim was so gentle at the victory ceremony

La Rhumba, bulgarians showed a great skating quality as always, a great technic, they showed the rhumba mood, the tango mood- an undeniable masterpiece, and the dramatic mood. This is a sport after all, there are levels of difficulties, GOE, PCS: choreo, skating skills, transitions, performance, interpretation..that counts only

they should reconsider the INTERPRETATION scores for DEL/SCH
they interpeted the characters of bonnie and clyde extremely well....each move done on the ice has thought and relation to the theme...
at least better than the wedding reception (dancing after the party..) or the deadly sins...(the baby?....ok) no offense
they shouldn't base this score on passion or "chemistry"
its interpretation of the program...

I wonder if Dom&Shab weren't elevated to the podium because the judges think the number 2 Russian team will outclass them shortly. I'm really impressed with that number 2 team (names eluding me right now). I think they're going to be a force to be reckoned with some day soon.

Sad for D&L, and Del&Shoe, but happy for Denk&Stav. I'm thrilled V&M and D&W did so well. They're going to be great to watch over the next few years.

Side note, G&P should have stuck with the Johnny Weir designed outfits.

Andrzej Dostatni - Any info?

I well remember ATS April Sargent competing as an icedancer back in the early 90s, but the TS Andrzej Dostatni I honestly have never heard of.

Does anyone have any info on him or his credentials and background? I don't even know his nationality?
