Dorothy Hamill got me interested in skating, but Dick Button is the one who turned me into a fan. I learned so much from him and enjoyed so many broadcasts with him. I sincerely appreciate his incredible contributions to figure skating. RIP Dick Button.

Somewhere up there, Dick Button is probably interviewing and encouraging all the lovely young skaters who lost their lives so tragically just last night.

I remember how when he was truly excited about a particular skater’s talent, you could always tell. Loved that about him.

He was unique. I feel like he was there for all the significant moments of watching skating.

I remember so well his narrating when Tai and Randy had to pull out of the Olympics; his voice quavering and so close to tears. Describing what we were all feeling.

It has been such a bad day for skating fans. I have several personal anecdotes with Mr.Button. I'm just feeling numb today. RIP, Mr.Button, you are an American treasure.

I read a great obit. It was thorough and surprising. Uncle Dick produced several B'way shows. And there was other info about his expertise in art and I believe antiques. He also was married and had several children. News to me. I suppose one could surmise he was brilliant. He was certainly beloved.

What a day for US Figure Skating.

At least with Mr Button, we can view it as a celebration of a life well lived. He was such a talented man who was part of my life for many years and contributed immeasurably to the sport I love so much. He is leaving us with many fond memories.

Safe passage, Uncle Dick.

Edit: When I say part of my life, I don't mean to imply I knew him personally. I did not, but it seemed as though I did. Many of our younger members may not be fully aware of the impact he had through his decades of commentary. We learned to love and understand this sport by watching him on TV.

One more remembrance/trivia: Dick Button is the only American to win a European Figure Skating Championship. Shortly after he and Barbara Ann Scott (Canada) won the singles titles in 1948, they closed the event to only Europeans.

The skating community mourns the loss of a great one on and off the ice. May skaters in honor of the Great One arch their backs, point their tones and stretch while wearing poished boots.. To better days a head with less mourning or more celebrating great skates and lives.
