Dream Programs

Because I'm a Broadway baby at heart and the musical theatre canon DOES actually extend beyond 80s megamusicals, I would love to see programs skated to non-warhorse musicals. A few thoughts:

- Jason Robert Brown's score for The Bridges of Madison County has several lovely pieces, but I could most see "Almost Real" as a program, with or without lyrics. It's quasi-operatic, lots of rise and fall especially later in the song, and very graceful.
- I think a lot of Hamilton is too rap-heavy to work for a figure skating program, but I think "Wait For It" could be very powerful in the right hands.
- As much as Disney music tends to feel very juniorish or exhibition-friendly (D/F's Lion King notwithstanding), The Hunchback of Notre Dame is actually a fairly sophisticated score; something like "The Bells of Notre Dame" could work.
- Not technically a Broadway musical, but the songs from the TV show Smash are quite good as well, and several of them could serve as an antidote to Moulin Rouge fatigue. "Let Me Be Your Star", "They Just Keep Moving The Line", or even a medley from the soundtrack could make a fun diva-ish program.
- I think someone earlier in the thread mentioned some of the less-used Gershwin songs like "I Got Rhythm" or "'S Wonderful", which I would second. Also from the Golden Age, maybe Cole Porter's "It's Delovely".

S wonderful....Is a great song. In fact all of those are great. I always wanted Patrick to try "Old Man River" I always loved that song and even tried to sing it a couple of times but it's just not in my range. Believe me, it doesn't sound the same if you're not a REAL Bass vocalist.

Yesss, I love Gershwin and there's so much to choose from besides Rhapsody in Blue and Piano Concerto in F. Summertime is pretty well-known, the violin version is nice. Also from Porgy and Bess, It Ain't Necessarily So is a great jazz piece, I can see it work well for Maé Bérénice Méité. She has great taste in music and like her skating it combines the power of the orchestra and the silky smooth voice of Ella Fitzgerald. I really like the Three Preludes as well, Gracie Gold used it in 2013, but I think Carolina Kostner could WORK that music (like with Shostakovich and Mozart).

Seeing a comment about over use of 'Send in the Clowns' on another thread, I started thinking about other Sondheim songs that I'd like to see, well some of the ballads anyway.

Being Alive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnTu8IBWvTQ

I think I'd prefer someone skating to that as an instrumental rather than with the vocals.

In a completely different tone, I think someone could come up with a clever SP to 'On the Steps of the Palace.'

Adelina- Je Suis Malade. This should be the only music she skates to for the rest of her career.

Or her "thing" could be doing a different Lara Fabian song every year. Adagio one year, J'Taime the next...she's also probably got some lesser-known songs that would work. I like this idea. No musical artist brings out the OTT in skaters better.

I think Fernandez was so wonderfully dancy in "Guys and Dolls" freeskate that I wish him to choose some dancing music, maybe a tango this time? There are several great instrumental pieces as e.g. "La Cumparsita" and "Jalousie", it could be a medley combined with "Fascination" by Nat King Cole. On the other hand also "Siboney by Xavier Cugat

would he great music for him and would allow for fantastic choreography, I´d imagine. And Pulp Fiction, too.....

For the Olympic 2017-18 season my dream would be some catchy swing music for him that the audience can clap along as they did with "Guys and Dolls".

I think this song would be a perfect exhibition number for the Shibs. It's a Trout Fishing in America song, and for those of you not familiar with them, they write songs geared more toward kids, but everyone can enjoy them. This song linked above is a tango and they're arguing over a toy, perfect number for siblings.

I really want to see someone skate with saint saens' piano concerto 2... my favorite piano concerto piece

Mao needs to bring back her Gershwin short program from '12-'13, but include lyrics for I got rhythm. That program worked better for her than her short from this season, and I think the lyrics would help bring that out again.

Anything that connects to Finland or Finnish culture would be exciting since the next Worlds will be held in Finland just like the fact that skaters chose American pop songs or theme a lot to appeal to the local audience in Boston.

However, I don't know what could be Finnish theme. I can only think Sibelius or Finnish metal rock music that I haven't ventured much. Some suggest Valse Triste, but skaters who plan to use the piece could be compared with R/K or V/M.

Maybe someone could skate to Sandstorm by Darude. Well Darude IS from Finland...

Update: And it seems like the best dance DJs/song mixers/etc are from Europe.

As much as I love Sibelius I wish we won't have a overflow of Finlandia or the Violin Concerto...
