Dutch Figure Skating 2024-2025

Due to my own holiday, I am slightly late: Niki Wories will represent the women, Daria Danilova and Michel Tsiba will respresent the pairs, and Hanna Jakucs and Alessio Galli will represent the ID for our country at Europeans. Yay. Here's the source (in Dutch):

The season continues in 2025, rather quickly too. 5 Dutch women will be competing at the Sofia Cup from 7-12th of January in Bulgaria. In seniors: Niki Wories, Jolanda Vos and Lois Libregts. In juniors: Roos Harkema and Noa Fay Cappenberg. Good luck ladies!
 
I was hoping for some Dutchies at the Bavarian Open, and my wish has come true. However, some are also scheduled to compete at Europeans, so I really am not sure all will show up/remain on the list. But I assume the jr women, the adv novice man and one of the ID couples will be certain to be there!

In singles:
Sr women: Niki Wories (also scheduled for Euros)
Jr women: Angel Delavaque and Lucca Dijkhuizen
Adv novice men: Leon Lo

Couples:
ID: Hanna Jakucs and Alessio Galli (also scheduled for Euros)
ID: Chelsea Verhaegh and Sherim van Geffen
No pairs.
 
Meanwhile from Sofia, Bulgaria, the following news.

In sr women Niki Wories was 7th, Jolanda Vos 13th and Lois Libregts 20th. I understand Niki had a new SP, so well done anyway - she had 3 weeks to work on it! :cheer::cheer:
In jr women Roos Harkema was 24th, Noa Fay Kappenberg did not reach the final (cut off point at 36) and was 40th. You don't often see cut off points for the final in these competitions, but there were so many jr women taking part I presume the organisors just had to do something to limit the necessary time!
 
I just saw on the FISU (World University Winter Games) website that Roos van der Pas will be taking part in the women singles category. Looking at the Dutch skating website there's a whole lot of names who they are sending to represent The Netherlands, but not hers. Probably all Short trackers. That's the interest of the Dutch Federation in the sport of Figure Skating seemingly!
 
The participation of Roos van der Pas in FS at the Universiade (or any other term that relates to the University Games) is finally mentioned on the Dutch skating Website. Together with 11 short trackers divided over the various events.

No ID or men (but then we have no skaters in those disciplines who are at university that I know of).
 
Well, well. An interesting Court Case. When Hanna and Alessio originally approached our Dutch Skating Federation with the question if they could represent The Netherlands, there was no Dutch couple dancing at that level. The answer was affirmative. After that, Chelsea and Sherim came into the picture and a fierce rivalry arose as well, as they really were skating at a similar level: enough to get the minimum points for Euros and Worlds, not enough to ensure a second couple could take part. Sometimes the one team, sometimes the other. The last few times it was Hanna and Alessio.

Chelsea and Sherim went to court about it because Hanna and Alessio do not live in The Nederlands, and - worse to a Dutch person - don't pay taxes and for social security either. The Judge referred back to the skating Federation who had not controlled Hanna's and Alessio's whereabouts or their living circumstances (the judge explicitly asked questions about that . So, though Chelsea and Sherim did not win as yet, the federation has asked the ISU for advice on this score. For good order: Hanna and Alessio have to my knowledge not asked for citizenship.

With regard to the pairs there was a totally different situation when there still existed a rivalry (now one pair has retired). Both pairs lived in the Nederlands, although they did visit another country once in a while. In both cases the male had Dutch citizenship. Daria now has Dutch citizenship as well, so she is really happy (and, if they have good enough results might even get to the OG; a first for the Netherlands).

I wonder how it will fall out. These things usually take some time, so we will see Hanna and Alessio at the upcoming Euros!

Nederlands ijsdansduo krijgt van rechter geen EK-ticket in gevoelige zaak

Het Nederlandse ijsdanskoppel Chelsea Verhaegh-Sherim van Geffen is het woensdag niet gelukt om via de rechter een EK-ticket te bemachtigen. In de gevoelige zaak oordeelde de rechtbank in Utrecht dat niet de burgerlijke rechter, maar de geschillencommissie van de KNSB hierover gaat.

Oh, I agree! But, I also understand where Chelsea and Sherim are coming from. Both couples have proved that they can get the points. They are really very similar in level (it's not a real rivalry for nothing). Chelsea and Sherim have been at Worlds, so has the other couple. I am just interested in what will happen now. And Hanna and Alessia certainly met up with the criteria the federation imposed, to be able to go to euros. That didn't happen in one competition. There were more of those.

The couples are very close in level, but Hanna and Alessio did better in total this time. And, when Hanna and Alessio asked the federation years ago if it was ok to represent the Netherlands, they got an affirmative reply. They (and neither could the skating federation at the time) couldn't know there would also come a couple with more credible Dutch papers (Chelsea and Sherim both are Dutch citizens). That makes this lawsuit interesting.

The couples really are very close on the ice. And, to be fair, both couples need money, and a place at Euros or Worlds does help on that score (not from the Federation, they spend money on longtrack and short track skating) to get sponsors. I will wait and see, and cheer on both. I am not in favour of one or the other, I don't really like the idea of suing to get your way, but - as I said earlier - I get where Chelsea and Sherim are coming from too.

I agree. I can understand that they really want the place, but I really don't like the way they are going about it.

It reminds me of when Chantelle Kerry went the legal route to try to stop the Australian Fed sending Brooklee Han to the Olympic qualifying instead of her. And then when that failed, and Brooklee qualified the slot, she tried the legal route again to stop Brooklee from actually getting to use the slot in Sochi.

This really turned a lot of other people, including myself, against Chantelle. It just seemed really nasty of her. Mind you, I remember an Australian member who knew the family commenting even before this that Chantelle wasn't a nice person, but Brendan was lovely. Oh, the irony!

Rather than secure her position in the Australian international team, these actions effectively destroyed Chantelle's Singles career.

Whatever way this case goes, Chelsea and Sherim will not come out of this looking good. They will get a bad reputation, and they will lose a lot of their fanbase. And they may even end up making themselves un-selectable.

They would have been better doing what @FlossieH said - letting it be decided on the ice rather than in the courtroom.

Roos van de Pas was 28th at the FISU Games, so she didn't make the cut and only skated an SP.

Nobody has pulled out of the Bavarian Open yet, so I wonder what's going to happen.
 
As expected, the Skating Federation (or rather its dispute committee) has decided in favour of Hanna and Alessio for the European championships. The Case isn't over yet: the ISU is looking into it, and that will take a bit longer. For now, we will just welcome Hanna and Alessio and cheer them on (at least I will).

Unless Hanna or Alessio have provided fraudulent information to the ISU at some point (and I doubt they would have been that stupid!), there is nothing the ISU can do. There is no requirement for skaters to be resident in or hold citizenship for the country they represent.

If Chelsea and Sherim want to be selected for ISU championships, they need to earn that selection. Sabotaging someone else's career is not the best way of going about that, and it shows them in very bad light.

As I said, I understand where they're coming from, but it definitely won't get them any fans. I guess the ISU will state each country can make its own rules regarding representation!
 
Back to the skating: At Bavarian Open the 2 Dutch Jr women did quite well, considering there were 40 participants: Angel was 6th, Lucca was 14th. But these feats are even more striking when you realise that Angel was in 18th after the short and Lucca was 17th. Both had some catching up to do, and they did! Angel was 3rd (!) in the FS - she did a true "Adamic" or if you like "Nathanic" rise, Lucca 11th. Well done girls! :cheer::cheer::clap:

Even in the case the couple does win in court (which isn't a guarantee), the reputational damage is already done and that's what matters in the longer run. In my case it's not to the point of actively wishing them to lose, but I certainly won't cheer for them. I'll also note that if the Netherlands FS fed has rejected their case for the Europeans, not a great start.
 
Niki Wories ended in 4th place at the Bavarian open. 7th in the SP and 5th in the FS (there was a lot of menning among the women!). Well done Niki! :cheer::cheer:
 
At the Bavarian Open Chelsea and Sherim are in 5th place, and Hanna and Alessio in 7th place after the Rhythm Dance.
 
Still with the Bavarian Open:
Chelsea and Sherim ended in 4th place, Hanna and Alessio in 7th. However the difference in points between 3 and 4 was rather bigger than between 4 and 7. Still, a good result for Chelsea and Sherim. Off to Europeans with Hanna and Alessio! Well done to both. :cheer:

Leon Lo, the participant in Advanced Novice boys stands in 3rd place after the SP. Good luck tomorrow in the FS! :hap10::hap10:
