Elena Ilinykh & Ruslan Zhiganshin

Their lines here were pretty nice: http://40.media.tumblr.com/3be0a5c901d11840aadf42925f98dd00/tumblr_ny9xsmw2Ik1tf2vbpo1_1280.jpg

I agree some of those educational vids are weird. I love Carolina, but using her as an example for good transitions? I see her more for a great example in categories like skating skills or choreography.

I also wondered about this... Carolina's transitions are certainly above average, perhaps even well above average, even for an elite skater, and I'd call them very good, but is she one of the very best? I wouldn't say so. Skating skills on the other hand are IMO her greatest strength and she's top of the top in that regard, of the current skaters competing second only maybe to Mao and that would be it, though I do think also their SS strengths are slightly different.

Carolina has very very good transitions in her programs. The only thing one can criticize is that she has rather long setup times for some of her jumps (so what the ISU calls transistions - intricacy could be better when it comes to her jumps, but is very good for the other technical elements.). The way she uses her whole body when she skates sets her apart. I'd almost forgotten about her "Riders on the Storm" SP.

After watching some of those ISU videos again (I already did that a couple of months or years ago, but so good to be reminded of them!) I'm sure that "Frida" is bound to get a very high PCS. When all those little things come together. :)

When was this ISU DVD produced? Around 2009 I think and at that point in time Carolina was probably the best. Mao has improved her transitions since then.

Yes it does and she is very good at it but that's not transitions.

I thought so before I saw those educational programs a couple of months (or years, don't remember) ago, but they got footwork, skating & body movement and non-listed element transitions in there. And when you think about it, the way she combines upper and lower body movements, it should really count as transitions. And the quality of those movementes is top-notch. But I don't deny that those ISU videos probably helped her a lot, because the judges learned to appreciate her qualities, and that certainly must have helped her transitions score.

I didn't work under the assumption that only the best examples were picked as "good" for the educational videos. I would assume that they picked examples that are easy to explain and easy to see for a less experienced viewer. Carolina's transitions are good, they didn't say excellent or best.

As far as I remember only Yuna (twice I think, Worlds 2013 FS and Sochi FS) and Adelina (once, Sochi FS) actually beat her transitions score in competition from 2012 onward. So the judges seem to think that she had the best transitions in the field.

That's fair enough :)

The stupid deduction mistake & subsequent effect on final placements might come back to hurt them again - if B/S are 4th or higher at GPF they will be 1 point above I/Z in the rankings & would get the final warm up group at Euros.

Just under 1 month til Nationals - I hope they are just polishing polishing polishing. They've been really consistent with the levels in the SD, but the GOE lets them down & I hope their priority in the FD is making the lifts smoother and faster. And of course I wouldn't object to a new dress for the SD! Fingers crossed the next few weeks are really productive for them and I can't wait to see them skate again! :hap10:

Who knew that a deduction will have such effect. I really hope they will give us the best they can during the nationals. Actually now the only thing I wish them is a little luck. They were really prepared for CoR the stupid fall on the short dance is what actually messed up the things. Me like the RU commentator were pretty sure they would have been at least third in the short dance. Then the marks in the FD would have been different. But there are many ifs -different GP assignments, different music for the SD. I am happy they have chosen the harder way. Hope it will pay in the end. Today I have tried their SD with several Waltz musics and it looked so beautiful, they just don't realize how beautiful it is combined with more classical waltz music. The music choice set them apart but also steals from the beauty and the effect of their movements.
At the moment the ice dance world is so unpredictable and will be really interesting to see how will go the GPF. According to me their skills are among the best but for so many reasons they are not at the GPF.
