Elena Ilinykh & Ruslan Zhiganshin

But look what it does for Kovtun. He is not The worlds greatest skater...

I meant she is not for him the figure I have in mind. Fully committed. Furthermore, do not understimate Buyanova. She might be silent but Kovtun's scores are mostly her doing. Not to mention the lack of big male skaters in Russia right now. Buyanova has a big reputation and political power in Russia.

Tutberidze is also the new IT coach for Russian Ladies Skating, Kustarova isn`t. I have the feeling like she is considered by the Fed as the one coach how produces good junior skaters, but if they want to reach anything these skaters have to leave.

That is my only issue with Kustrova. I think she is such a talent as a coach. That team is great at matching skaters and producing results on the junior level. I would think she would have a lot of Fed support but there seems to be none.

Oh I don't but Tat's name grouped in has not hurt any, lol.

Changes are needed, that is for sure. I just hope they will work it through everything together. That is will not break them (for example if one of them wants to stay in Russia when other wants to leave). I wish them all the strength to stick together with each other! That is the most important right now. They are too adorable to let anything get in between them.

I think they both, Elena and Ruslan, appreciate each other. He seems to be very supportive and she apparently never had that in a partnership. I think he knows how lucky he is to have Elena as a partner. So, I hope their partnership stays strong through this.

I don't question the partnership at all. They respect each other and provide great support to one another. They work well together and have an asset not only in their skating but each other. Both of them know this. I love that he doesn't hinder her creativity and he takes the lead and is strong for her when she needs it.

You know what? It might sound silly and it's not a huge deal but to me speaks a lot. Somebody explain to me, like I'm 5 years old, why on earth IZ skated at their most important competition with the same old black&boring costumes, for the 3rd time in a row, when the GPF gold medalists despite having a WOW costume (don't like it myself but it does make the right effect) and big scores think they need to bring a new costume so the judges will see something new? :handw: Do I have to explain them that even the best dishes needs to be put on plate in a certain way to get a Michelin Star? :rolleye:

Aesthetically costumes are important, that is the only reason I think Stepanova for example gets any PCS. The skating should matter more but a change, if they go to Euros is needed.

It`s actually unusual for Elena to not change up her dresses. Ruslan has actually nice lines, but they were completely hidden under his outfit. I`ve already mentioned it, but packaging has never been a strength of Kustarova`s team.

I remember back to the horrid costumes, with frilly collars the Sinitsina and Zhiganshin used to wear. Elena is soo gorgeous with beautiful body line and look for any color in the rainbow. Ruslan needs something to flatter his line because he has gorgeous extension. Showcase them.

I think that what the judges did today isn't wise for Russian ice dance in the short and the long term. Don't they want a Russian couple to actually medal or win at international competitions? They're sending out a weird message to all the competing couples. Fast & pretty = very high PCS. Do they want their skaters to actually improve themselves? Obviously not really ... :sad46:
I think that Elena and Ruslan did very well today, I think that was their best performance, not only of this program. They are on the right track, but they aren't rewarded for it. :noshake:

But Elena didn't need their help with costumes and from what she said it was her choice. So what has changed?

Maybe they wanted to emphasize the skate not the clothes. And maybe they spent all their money on coaches and choreographers so they can have the most difficult and different programs so that they can receive mediocre scores even when making an outstanding performance.

Elena said in the interview that she is relieved that this is the last FD for 2015. I am not sure whether they realized this, but this is the last Frida at all. I am not happy that they did not managed to show their best of both dances in one competition and they did not dressed like rock stars and more colourful clothes for Frida. I was imagining every their performance to see a different Frida at least this is what this dance deserve. But no. Every outing was nerve game and pressure.

You don't need a lot of money to make a good skating costume. Their Carmen costume last season wasn't expensive either. In this case only a color change would've been enough. It's not about emphasizing the clothes over the skating. Let's be honest here. V&M were superb skaters also but that doesn't mean that the look is not important in a performance. Everything is in this sport and the costumes are an important part. It's like saying the look is not important for a dancer or ballerina. It is.

Yep, me too. I agree.

I just wanted to think of reasons why. And this was the best I could think of otherwise I have to admit that this year Elena lost her tastes in good music and good clothing. Or the unreasonable and envy comments on her body has influenced her clothes decisions. Or they kept the spicy look for the EU and Worlds. Or they just felt too comfortable in their practice costumes. Or they though that choosing unusual music and adding unusual clothes would have been too much... Do tell me the most probable reason.

And if you ask a child, he will chose the combination of music and look over skating and some judges are on this level so if they danced on classical music and looked like prince and queen she is their PCS would have had been higher even with easier programs. So I preferred either they played all the rock star thing with all dance, roles and clothing or they changed the whole dance and showed us some classics and own it like they did with Carmen.

I know I must come off as schitzoid at times but I must say I'm really proud of what I saw in them today. They remind me of a young Virtue and Moir in some ways, not the same but in a similar vein. Nothing they do you forget. No offence to their fans but S/K were really mediocre today and didn't deserve those PCS scores. Its like the judging changed, easy, open fast skating that's all you need to do. In time people will see for themselves and get over the blue eyes. I see more prospects in Z/G and our boys. I'm literally too happy for them to be mad at the ridiculous scores.

If their season ends at Nationals or at Euros, then they should take a page out of S/K's book and work their booties off, but there is more than just hard work they need to work on from this point on but also a better strategy. Maybe we should compile a list of our suggestions and send it to them seriously. Today was a wake up call for their entire team.
1) Coaches: To stay with current coaches or to find new coaches, that is the question. I feel like they are very attached to their coaches, and won't leave for that reason, but is their desire to be on the top of the podium stronger to the point that they would get new coaches. There is also the option of consulting or getting an additional coaches. Platov and Carol Lane are the coaches that come to my mind right now. I also say they should meet with Chesnichenko and Nechaeva to work on lifts ( they had fabulous wow lifts for their teams especially Kriengkrairut/ Giulietti-Schmitt who have about the same height difference as Elena and Ruslan) as well as matching leg lines and matching feet (e.g. Emily Samuelson and Evan Bates were exquisite with this). I'm tempted to tweet Elena and Ruslan videos of these lifts from Chesnichenko and Nechaeva's past teams to get their creative juices flowing.

Ruslena' current coaches need to make some major improvements too if they want their teams to succeed.
2) Styling: The only costumes of Elena's and Ruslan's I have liked was for Carmen and if I remember correctly his was a copy of one of Najarro's costumes. Seriously, they need a stylist who can create better costumes that enhance the programs and their bodies/lines as well as a better costume maker who can make beautiful costumes that look expensive. One of my biggest complaints this season was the SD costumes looked unfinished and didn't give a rock-element what so ever. Even Y/M had dreadful costumes, so their entire team needs to get on Pinterest, subscribe to some fashion magazines, etc. for costume ideas and styling.
3) Programs/choreography: This year was a big learning lesson in this department. I loved their programs, but I can see why others didn't like them. The SD still needs refinement. I feel like they can still try to think outside the box, but do something to keep elements that make it partially traditional (e.g. They could have tried a gothic waltz instead of the traditional prince/princess theme). A lot of you have made great points about changing the difficulty of things like changing their twizzles especially when it hurts their scores rather helping. I would like them to try Christopher Dean, Phillip Askew, or Tom Dickson as far as choreographers. Elena and Ruslan need programs that play to their chemistry. For the SD next year, I strongly suggest they avoid hip hop and just do blues/swing. I hope they channel the sensuality of Michelle Pfeiffer and Jeff Bridges in The Fabulous Baker Boys http://youtu.be/6RKVDNVu5I0 for their SD. For their FD, they could try something outside the box or music not used before (but something that builds or helps in telling their story/theme) and still something that where their connection is at the forefront.
4) PR: next season, I say they put out a video describing their programs. One American team did I it this year to explain their Beethoven program (he was Beethoven and she was the music) and this really enhanced the program for me.

As we used to chant in school "No surrender, no retreat, look forward, not back. The best is yet to come."

They can change coaches or experiment with their programs but as long as they keep making mistakes nothing will change. the mistakes last year at euros and worlds are somewhat forgivable but this year it actually got worse. Maybe work with psychologist? They also still skate very individually. Im not sure how to actually solve this. Usually its either you have connection or not.

I love their music choices myself. No complains there, except you do not go half way with the rock, in terms of costumes, and her Frida's dress looked banal. His costume on the SD and her costume on the FD were really bad in showing their lines.
I think Tex explained better what I had in mind though. I totally agree with him.
