Elena Ilinykh & Ruslan Zhiganshin

I really like their sophisticated FD, but it's not a crowd-pleaser. And they need the crowd.

I don't see PC Mozart as a crowd pleasure either. DelScho Frida was received very well and IZ Frida is head and shoulders above Del&Scho program. A lot of things have gone wrong this season but Frida is not one of them.

It`s sometimes difficult to create programs that click with the judges. For example I liked WP`s first version of their 2012/2013 FD, but the judges hated it. I couldn`t understand what the judges saw in DW`s NDDP programme, but it made them World Champions.

Seems sort on monotonous. I like this piece from La Bayadere though. Don't know if it would work though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-5q5G6rysE

How does their fourth place finish affect funding for next year?

I would die if they do Bayadere, I love that ballet.
Also, 4th place is off the team, so I'd assume they wouldn't get any funding aside from travel reimbursement for competitions that the Fed sends them to.

They still can be in the national team and receive full funding. SK were also on the national team, although they didn`t qualify for Euros last season.

Mozart is always catchy. I like the Frida soundtrack but it needs time to get into it. I remember that the crowd at CoC reacted very subdued to their performance (they weren't at their best, but still). I guess they have many fans in Russia, so the crowd at competitions in Russia will cheer for them more naturally. What I want to say is, that maybe they did Frida too early in their career together. Not because they aren't able to handle it, but because the crowd and the judges want light entertainment from them right now and don't take the trouble to get into a more sophisticated program.

Full funding goes to top 5 at nationals plus the top junior team, then reserve team funding is awarded at the fed's discretion to other teams. They'll still be on the full funding & getting the same as S/B, B/S, S/K and Z/G.

Well they didn't have that much funding this season also, despite being national champions.

I guess if they don`t receive enough funding, there is no chance for them to go to the US, if they want to.

Don't know what's the truth about this funding thing but Werner said that IZ didn't had enough money and that they paid Najarro with their own money. That was also reason why they couldn't go to US to work with that choreographer they intended to for the SD

This is my feeling too. I also don't think more classical or traditional material has to mean no creativity- Carmen is as traditional as they come, but that was awesome when they did it.

This was always my view. Especially with the music choice for the SD. I thought that as the assignment is a waltz you should use waltz music. Use approprtiate music for the appropriate dance. Queen is not waltz music irrespective of whether the beat technically fits or not. However you can still be original even choosing a more traditional music piece. As you mentioned, look at their Carmen.

I'm pretty sure I/Z would have gotten the same amount of funding as everyone else. Whether that was enough to do all they wanted is perhaps a different question, but without further information or proof I'm not willing to buy into the theory that they got less than others on the national team. If more information or proof were presented though I'd absolutely be all ears.

Kustarova said they paid for him last year for Carmen with their own money, when they were only on the reserve team. They got the same as everyone else on the full team this year. Werner generally talks more nonsense than even Marina on one of her blue eyes speeches.

I think it is pretty well accepted that Russia spared no expense on its athletes and all other preparations leading up to Sochi. Sochi was the most expensive Olympics on record and they expected their athletes to do well. It was pretty clear from the Ministry's comments after the Olympics that all the athletes were going to be on a very tight budget for a while.

I don't think that is the case this season. I have heard that only the top 4 will get funding and only the top 3 will get full funding as the ruble is so weak.
Bad luck for Elena on partial funding, so they will probably have to stay with Kustorova unless they are well off.
Also even more bad luck for Z/G without any funding, can Zahorski ever catch a break?
