Elena Ilinykh & Ruslan Zhiganshin

I'd love to see them do something classically Russian - Igor already gave T/T Polotsevian Dances, but I think The Young Prince & The Young Princess from Shez, or Kismet by Borodin could work really well - show Marina who the real "Russian couple" are. Failing that, I want a ballet inspired program to La fille mal gardée,
The RBC's Alice in Wonderland or Sylvia (And then Rus's Bolshoi ballerina girlfriend could help a lot!)

That would be lovely. I still want them to skate to Danse Macabre one day. Elena can play the demon who seduces fairy tale prince Ruslan to the evil side.
If they choose to do hip hop in their SD, I wonder if Organ Donor fits the requirements. PB skated to it in the 07/08 season and I loved their concept. I already know where Elena and Ruslan could put their twizzles and step sequence.

I've been looking at the teams eligible for GP spots next year, and worrying that it might be really hard for I/Z to get 2 spots - there are so many teams guaranteed something it leaves very little room for anything extra. I/Z definitely get 1 spot because they are 7th on the SB list. There are 48 spots available in total, and around 40 are already "taken" based on Worlds results, seasons best lists and the world rankings. Then there's the question of V/M maybe using their comeback spots, and junior teams potentially turning senior, so it might turn out that there are only 4 or so slots available to assign to skaters who don't have 2 already.

The best hope is a situation similar to S/K this year - let them get the guaranteed assignment at another event, leave the host picks open until the latest opportunity, and if they haven't got in anywhere else, give them COR. I/Z should be at the top of the subs list anyway if it works properly. But the biggest consideration for the Russian fed is that only 1 team is guaranteed 2 spots, S/K. Then B/S, I/Z and S/B all have 1. (And Popova/Vlasenko, but it looks like they split and she is now skating with Mozgov, and Loboda/Drozd, but I have heard they stay junior.) Then there is Z/G, who will want to get out on the GP, but are not eligible for anything but a host pick. If I was the federation, I'd say let Z/G prove themselves on the challenger circuit - their one international outing at the Santa Claus Cup last year wasn't all that impressive - leave the host pick slots open and then use it for the 2nd assignment for B/S, I/Z and S/B, so they end up with 4 teams who have a shot at GPF. But that assumes they have that flexibility with the host picks - if every fed took that approach, they couldn't give all teams who are guaranteed a spot an assignment. I wonder if the ISU will come under any pressure to go back up to 10 teams per event for dance? The feds won't be happy if they can't use their host picks, but they can't take away "guaranteed" spots from skaters who have earned them based on last years results.

I think that makes it crucial to have a strong start to the season - look great at test skates, get good early results at senior B or challenger, because they are going to be depending on the fed to get a 2nd spot, and this season showed that I/Z don't get any favours from anyone. They are going to have to be ready to fight.

Or China could say, come on guys we like you. And they could also get a slot at skate America and leave the Russians to do whatever they please. But I agree, I just want them to do well no matter where they go.

Snow63 mentioned in the Russian Ice Dance thread that Z/G were guaranteed a CoR spot, the other one will probably go to S/K as the best placed team at Worlds. So, the Fed only has one open host spot. It`s reeally unfortunate S/B had such a bad showing at Worlds. I just hope Shpilband gets Ruslena ready to slay next season.

Who says Z/G are guaranteed a CoR spot? It would be a massively stupid move to do that. And yes, normally top team at Worlds gets CoR, but in this instance it would be a waste of a host pick when Russia has so many teams that need the pick & S/K are guaranteed 2 spots whatever. The Fed should let them be assigned elsewhere so they can get as many teams out as much as possible.

If they really do make those choices, the fed deserves their current ice dance mess & Lena & Rus should call 2018 Olympics a wash and make the switch to Kazakhstan now.

I would not panic about assignments yet. Is there ever a year when at least one of the team with two GP doesn't WD from at least one of the competition (if not both)? I know that doesn't mean that Ruslena will be picked right away, but I'm pretty sure sooner or later they will have two assignments. Wouldn't Igor Shpilband pull some strings for them? :p

I`m really hoping that Shpilband will do exactly that, it`s not like the other teams shy away of taking advantage of their coaches` influence, so why should Elena and Ruslan?

Well I hope Igor does, because it's becoming increasingly apparent that the Federation will not.

I think whatever happens they'll be fine. No need to panic no matter how many assignments they eventually get. But I'm hopeful for 2.

Z/G aren't guaranteed anything. I could see them doing some challengers or a senior B but they aren't GP ready, a lot to clean up there. I also don't understand why they should call 2018 a wash and move to KAZ.. IZ will probably end up getting 2 assignments. They had a break out first season and had to deal with unexpected pressure coming into this past season, not to mention some (imo) questionable decisions made by Aleexeva/ Kustrova. They lived and they learned and have a power house of a coach behind them now. They will come out fine as they did in the 14-15 season when everyone wrote them off.

As far as the Federation goes, they watch SB get dumped internationally at Euros and Worlds. I have no doubt the RUS Nationals panel is salty. Even with error Ruslena have a higher scoring ceiling. I highly doubt the Fed will make that mistake again. After worlds the Russian Fed should have been embarrassed. Dance needs a star and they are currently training in Novi. Happy off season everyone:)

Missed you and your sparkling wit around here :) I thought I was going to have to endure the off-season with nut jobs.

EDIT: Very embarrassed.

Oh girl, reading some of these posts, my wit and charm are back in full force. Now we need Althia and Alba and the trifecta is complete:)

I am glad seeing positive vibes here. I am so happy they already have programs for the new season. I just can't wait to see confirmation they are staying with Igor. Then i need to hear their music choice. Then I need 2GPs assignments. The next is to see their performance. Then I need high scores. Hope the Feds thought through last year poor decisions and support them. I still can't believe the Russian championships last season standings. I will not trust Fed up until I see the nationals results. Too much interests and shady business there. Really crossing my fingers for Ruslena to have one great season ahead.

I am positive about the season. Ruslena moved for change and are going to come out swinging. I am thrilled they are bringing back the non touch step. Really showcases their edges and skating skills that few can match, especially their home competition.

That's the vibe that's been missing

I am expecting Igor and I&Z to arm wrestle Marina and S&K for a spot at 2016 Skate America! If we in the USA are lucky, maybe both teams will be there!

I'm not going to lie. I am hoping IZ get an SA spot. I want to go (if it's on my half of the U.S). I also hope the get an invite to TEB, but I have a feeling it will be COC again. I know they are slated to get one GP but they will wind up with 2. I am also hoping for a Senior B and a challenger. Because as everyone know- I am all about ranking points!

I would be fine with any GP with the exception of Skate Canada. I think SC could potentially have the toughest lineup in dance with WP + VM + one of the World medallists. It`s unfortunate they can`t do the US Classic, because it collides with the Russian test skates, but if they get SA the Autumn Classic in Canada could be a possibility, if they stay in Novi.
