The SPs have always been Liza's nemesis - it clearly is a mental thing. Remember when Liza's name couldn't come up without the conversation automatically going to her "weight issues"? No one ever explained how they could bother her more in the short than the long program - if your stamina is an issue, and the short program is too much for you, surely you'd be spent by the middle of the long! So, yeah, when things start going wrong, the first thing to be hit is the short program. She's said herself that she feels the pressure more of that, as it has to be perfect - there is more leeway in the long.
That's why I understand the SP strategy this year - give her tech content that she is comfortable with, and build her confidence that way. The only way to really build confidence is going out there and showing herself, time after time, that yes, she can do it. And she can't afford to dig herself in too deep with messy short programs - both obviously in the short term, but also in the long run, the wrecking of her confidence.
It seems that this year she seems to know more what she needs to do, and how to work with herself mentally. As she says, the more pressure she'd put on herself, the worse things got.
I hope she will do well at Golden Spin and continue to build on what she's already accomplished with regard to improvements this season. Hopefully she can then go into Nationals with some measure of rebuilt confidence - and perhaps even hunger to perform well.
