Elizaveta Tuktamysheva

I am so jealous. I wish I had a figure like Liza's! She is incredibly beautiful.

Here is a 20 minute interview with her, unfortunately (for me at least) all in Russian, which I do not speak. Not too bad, as the gal is so gorgeous in any language! Any bits and pieces of a translation would be appreciated. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p69qcqJi3dY

My Russian ain't perfect so if I misunderstood anything, I hope somebody will correct me. Anyway, she says she started skating when she was 5 in Glazov, Udmurtia (saying that there are two versions: one saying that it was her mom's idea, one saying that it was her own idea...funny she doesn't tell which version is the right one...maybe both? :) Btw her mom was also her teacher at the local school)...anyway, she says she doesn't remember much about that time, but she showed talent (especially with her high jumps) and that caught Mishin's attention at a kids competition in Belgorod when she was 9 (Mishin invited her to Saint Petersburg the next day). They ask her about being called in the past "the Wunderkind of figure skating", she replies she never really focused on that, simply followed her coach's instructions; she recalls she started doing the 3A when she was 12 or 13. They also ask her about her plans after FS, she says she's very interested in psychology and would like to work as a sport psychologist/psychiatrist...

Gotta go now, maybe I'll add more details later ;)

As promised, more details: Liza adds she particularly likes competitions in Asian countries because the ice rinks are always packed, the public is very supportive and generally they love FS (just as much as they love ice hockey or football in Russia). Of course also competitions at home are special. Commenting last season, she says it gave her the chance to think about what to do next, how to improve and become stronger. Telling a little more about her mom (who's a math and geometry teacher), Liza says she's always supportive (and she stays out of FS related stuff because she understands it's a process between skater and trainer), never imposes her own opinion but always cares about Liza's one and most of all that Liza's happy (and she says she's really happy about having such a great mum). Asked about Pairs vs. Individual skating, she says of course that the two disciplines are pretty different, technically but also physically (pairs female skaters needing to be skinnier of course). Asked if anybody's ever suggested her to try Pairs skating, she says she's never been interested, also because she's always been told that she was good with jumps and there isn't as much jumping in Pairs. Asked about her programs for this season (the interview was aired at the end of last season I think), she says she can't go into details, hopes the public will be positively surprised by her new SP. Asked about what suggestions she would give to young figure skaters' parents on whether their daughter should or shouldn't pursue FS, Liza answers that the most important thing is whether the girl really loves skating or not. If she does, good, but if she's unsure, then there's no need to. She adds that the whole thing can be hard on parents as well, since having a daughter into FS means a lot of effort from parents too. Asked about her younger sister, Liza says she took on (if I got it right) ballet, joking that when they were still living in Udmurtia they decided that one figure skater in the family was enough, and then more seriously explaining that her sister's build makes her well fit for ballet (long legs!). Asked about ideal builds for FS, she says the most important thing is that the skater is comfortable with her body and can jump and skate easily, adding that some skaters may be taller than 1.70 and be great nonetheless, like her favorite skater, Carolina Kostner.

BTW. Is Liza ethnic Udmurt like I read somewhere? :) I'd love to see some video with Liza speaking in Udmurt language!

As far as I can tell, yes Liza is ethnic Udmurt.

Well, put it like this: to a foreigner like me anyway, Liza has always looked like a younger version of your stereotypical Udmurt woman. (For some reason, any time you see pictures of Udmurt women, it is always older ones! You never seem to see pictures of younger Udmurt women!)

While we are on the subject, I am not sure whether the younger skaters from Udmurtia are ethnic Udmurt as well. Maybe it is because they are so young and haven't developed them yet, but Zagitova, Lozko and Ogoreltseva do not seem to have the same features that Liza does.

As for whether Liza speaks the Udmurt language, I have no idea! And the same goes for the younger girls.

But, I would like to think that Liza does at least. I always like it when people keep in touch with their heritage.

Alina Zagitova is tatar.

Thank you, Lana05. It was obvious they had different ethnic backgrounds, but I wasn't sure just what Alina's background was.

By the way, I was looking at a table on Wikipedia of the percentage of "natives" within the population of the Republics based on the results of the 2010 census. And I was shocked to see just how few ethnic Udmurts there are in Udmurtia. Only 28.0% of the population are Udmurt. 62.2% of the population are Russian.

So, to put it another way, Liza is special. ;)

There is big politicking about Udmurt and Komi because they speak languges that are close to Finnish. And Finland always use them in their politics as they are on finnish side and hate Russia and bluh bluh bluh/ That why some people who doesn't like Finnish politics towards Russia called them Russian

OK, so I can't find the post of Sugarpova's that I was going to reply to (it was probably in a different thread).

It was the photo of the official at the Nationals SP draw with his eyes fixed on Liza's chest.

Well, this one (also taken by Mihail Sharov at the draw) is just as good:
