Is it common to be in the hospital for 2 weeks? That is a looong time.

For severe pneumonia, yes. My father spent at least a week hospitalized with it when I was very young (and I developed my own case, though I only remember that I thought the word “pneumonia” was funny and spelled “nemoanyeh.”) But he wasn’t able to breathe unassisted, let alone skate. I’m guessing something was lost in translation — pneumonia usually doesn’t require hospitalization, and if it does, it’s a severe case. Of course, a mild to relatively bad case of it would be enough to knock anyone out of an activity like skating for two weeks, since antibiotics are almost always prescribed and you need to complete the full course.

Even if her case isn't severe enough to require hospitalization, I can't imagine trying to skate through pneumonia. When I came down with it a couple springs ago, the worst part was having to breathe the chilly air anytime I went outside - it felt like thousands of little needles poking my lungs. I bet trying to be in a rink, or even just going out in the winter weather would be incredibly painful. Best that she takes the time to heal.

Ugh! I had pneumonia when I was two. It's one of my earliest memories, along with burning my finger when I was also two. Haha Two must have been a bad year. It looks like i had a reason for those toddler tantrums.
Anyway, I just remember being scared in an oxygen tent and crying for my mom. I think I was only there overnight. Luckily, Liza's a big girl and probably isn't crying for her mommy, but I hope she's being comforted all the same. Get well soon. Empress! :console:

Hi 50 I haven't seen you for ages!

I had pneumonia as well 20 years ago and it's no fun just for an average person like myself my ribs hurt like crazy I was coughing a lot and in pain so I can't imagine how this world-class figure skater Liza could go out and perform like she did in the Grand Prix finals knowing she had pneumonia lurking in her system. Blows my mind. Many blessings to Liza for a full recovery and continuing her career she's just so young by figure skating standards outside of the Russian ladies.

Hi, Scott! I came back (sort of) after Skate Canada. I lurk a bit and post a little, but mostly I hang out at Medvedeva's fan forum.

Yeah, it's going to be tough for her to compete at Euros. I think she's done enough to secure a spot on the team, but I'm not sure she can use that spot effectively, since she will lose a lot of training momentum over the two weeks of rest, and then she won't have much time to get back in form. This might disrupt two competitions instead of just one, and that's terrible after the renaissance she's had this season. Hopefully, she can at least compete at Worlds, but I'll keep my fingers crossed for Euros too, just in case.

I've read that GPF Thunderbird Arena in Vancouver is so bad it even doesn't have heating and it was -2 Celsius all over the rink, and skaters couldn't get warm.

Poor Liza. I really hope this doesn’t have too big an impact on the rest of her season that would be so sad after the amazing comeback she has had! Positive vibes being sent her way ❤️[emoji178][emoji304]

That's really sad news. Especially this season, when Liza's on fire. I really hope they will send her to championships...

Super upset. Not even because Liza will miss the Nationals, but because she has pneumonia. I had it when I was 15 (~10 years ago). Literally spent three weeks in bed, half of that time not being able to make any sound. And then I was still on sick leave from school for 2-3 more weeks. I hated that time so much.
I hope Liza will get better as soon as possible with the minor (or better without any) consequences.

Well done empress! :luv17:

I'm so happy for Liza getting the bronze medal. :yes2:

Welcome back 50! Sort of. ;)

Euros may be in doubt but Liza should be back in form for world's.

I had walking pneumonia 20 years ago and missed a big Super Bowl party and stayed home in bed. I must say I did not do much activity wise and breathing was hard and coughing hurts and sneezing hurt my ribs so much my lungs hurt too. I can't believe how great Liza skated in Vancouver less than a week ago when she had pneumonia in her system. it really is miraculous and something to be admired.

Liza has just posted an IG story thanking her fans for their support. If you're on IG or Twitter, you can send her your wishes.
