Rehearsals for this year’s show will start this Saturday.

Have to say, the 3 shows this year will be a chore. Except for that firecracker from Croatia, there isn’t much for me this year. All the male acts sound the same too.

But, it is the 10th year anniversary of the 2012 show, which I consider the greatest edition ever. Pure Euphoria, in a great venue at a great country.

Still a big regret of mine that I didn’t go there, as I heard from people at the 2014 show (that I did travel to), that I missed out big time not going to Baku. I know I did.

And for the first time in 9 years, there is somebody from Northern Ireland competing! :cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

Brooke Scullion, the singer who is representing Ireland.

And she is the most local to me of all the Eurovision performers that have been from NI. Her home village, Bellaghy, is only 16 miles away!

Admittedly, she is from a different county to me (my hometown is right next to the county boundary). However, the barony her village is in, Loughinsholin, was part of Tyrone until 1613. So I think we can claim her as our own. ;) Plus, since the formation of the super-councils in 2015, we have actually been in the same local government area.

In case you are wondering, there has only ever been one person from County Tyrone singing at Eurovision. The most recent act from NI, as it happens. Ryan Dolan, who finished 26th and last in the 2013 Final for Ireland. But, he is from the far west of the county, whereas I am from the far east. Ryan's hometown, Strabane, is about 40 miles away. So, Brooke is definitely more local.

As you know, I actively avoid hearing the songs before they are performed in competition. So, I don't actually know if Brooke's song is my taste. But, whether it is or not, I hope she performs it as best as she can, and gets the result she deserves.

I should probably add at this point that, out of 14 previous appearances, our acts have won the contest 4 times (1970, 1980, 1987 and 1992), and been in the Top 5 on 6 other occasions (including runner-up in 1984). And one of our Eurovision alumni, Johnny Logan, holds the record for the most wins (1980 and 1987 as a performer, and 1987 and 1992 as a songwriter).

So, no pressure...

Semi Final 1 will be starting in a few minutes.

I won't be watching LIVE tonight, as I have other plans. But I will watch it tomorrow.

I've now watched last night's Semi, and the first thing I have to say is this:

LAURA PAUSINI!!!!!! :cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

And good to see Mika too. Although, I have to admit, I’m confused as to how he ended up presenting an Italian edition of the contest. Surely Italy isn’t that short of local talent that they have to look overseas.

That said, I wonder if it is a case that Mika (who is based in the UK) has always wanted to present Eurovision, but has realised that there is no chance of the UK winning the contest (and, hence, hosting it the following year) any time soon. So, he’s offered his services to other countries.

And I know I always complain about the way that the BBC doesn’t show the second re-cap in the Semi- Final that we don’t vote in. But, I’m not complaining too much this time, because they instead had their Semi-Final hosts, Scott Mills and Rylan Clarke, interviewing 3 of the acts that will perform later in the week… starting with Brooke Scullion!!!

What a lovely girl she is!

I just hope I like her song when we hear it tomorrow night.

But, judging by the quip Rylan came out with, I take it he doesn’t know that she’s a Northerner. :rolleye:

As for the contest itself, mama mia! That has to be the worst Semi-Final line-up there has been for years!

You know the way I print out the running order, and mark the ones I like as I go along. And then pick a Top 4 from the ones I liked. Well, at the end of all the performances, there were only three that I could say I really liked.

For the fourth song, it was a choice between two. With both of them, I thought the song itself was great, but that the singer was not good enough to do it justice.

So, here are my Top 4 from Semi Final 1:

  1. 🇭🇷 Mia Dimšić - "Guilty Pleasure"
  2. 🇬🇷 Amanda Georgiadi Tenfjord - "Die Together" (q)
  3. 🇦🇲 Rosa Linn - "Snap" (q)
  4. 🇧🇬 Intelligent Music Project - "Intention"

The Bulgarian song would have been my favourite song from Semi-Final 1 by a mile, except that the singer was so flat. I know it’s not his style of music, but Mika would have done a far better job at interpreting the music and going up and down as required.

In case you were wondering, the other song was 🇩🇰 REDDI - "The Show". For me, the Danish singer was actually a lot better than the Bulgarian singer. But, the Bulgarian song itself was so good that it got the deciding vote.

Neither of these songs qualified for the Grand Final.

For the rest of the songs, they were either weird or lacklustre. A couple of the lacklustre songs might have been better with somebody different singing. But, for most of them, I don’t think a different singer would have made any difference.

I really hope the quality of the songs and the quality of the performers are much better in Semi Final 2 tomorrow night.

Just popping in to remind you that Semi Final 2 is about to start.

I am currently watching the LIVE online coverage of the Thursday night races from the North West 200 road race meeting. (By rights, I should be watching track side. But, I'm still nervous of going out in crowds).

I'll try to get Semi 2 watched first thing tomorrow morning before the MotoGP practice from Le Mans starts.

When I saw presenter Alessandro Cattalan’s dance performance at the start of the show, I though “Oh, oh. I hope this isn’t an indication of the quality of tonight’s acts”.

How wrong could I have been?! It was a brilliant night!!! And I didn’t have long to wait to find that out – the Rasmus put that worry to rest with the very first song!

No, your eyes are not deceiving you. You did read that correctly. The Rasmus ARE competing in Eurovision! :jaw:

But, why oh why does this always happen?! That there is one Semi-Final where I like only a few of the acts, and another Semi-Final where I like practically all the acts!

In Semi-Final 1, there were only 3 acts that I really liked. 😞
In Semi-Final 2, there were only 4 acts that I didn’t like! :drama:

So, since there were so few that I didn’t like, I will go through them and explain why.

🇮🇱 Israel in Semi-Final 2 was like 🇺🇦 the Ukraine in Semi-Final 1. I liked the first 15 or 20 seconds, and then it went totally weird.

🇬🇪 Georgia would have been one of my favourites were it not for the verses being so weird. Well, I’m guessing that they were supposed to be verses. They weren’t like any verses I’ve ever heard before! Which is a shame, as the rest of the song was great!

🇸🇲 San Marino had a great song, but didn’t have a great singer performing it.

The 🇨🇿 Czech Republic’s song just wasn’t my taste.

Which leaves 14 songs that I did like. And, unfortunately, 14 songs into 10 slots doesn’t go. 😞

Out of those 14 songs, there were 4 that stood out. And, I have to be honest, I liked them all so much, and I kept changing the order that I put them in. Put it like this: all four of them were in my #1 spot at one point or another when I was trying to formulate a Top 4 during the interval.

So, here are my Top 4 from Semi Final 2:

  1. 🇫🇮 The Rasmus - "Jezebel" (q)
  2. 🇸🇪 Cornelia Jakobs - "Hold Me Closer" (q)
  3. 🇦🇺 Sheldon Riley - "Not The Same" (q)
  4. 🇲🇹 Emma Muscat - "I Am What I Am"

Although I haven’t heard the pre-qualified songs yet, I am predicting that one of these songs in particular will win the overall contest. And as proof of how close my deliberations were, it is not actually the song that ended up as my #1 choice from Semi-Final 2. It’s the song that ended up as #2.

So, unless one of the pre-qualified countries pulls something out of the bag, I am predicting that next year’s Eurovision will be held in Sweden for the third time in 10 years.

That’s getting into Ireland territory!

Speaking of which, I’m disappointed but not surprised that the competitor who is from only 16 miles from me, Brooke Scullion, didn’t get through to the Final. Although I did like her song, it wasn’t as strong as most of the others in Semi-Final 2. The frustrating thing is that it was better than most of the ones in Semi-Final 1.

But, never fear, there will still be somebody from Northern Ireland appearing on Saturday night’s final. The 1984 runner-up and 1992 winner, Linda Martin, will be announcing who the Irish Jury chose as their Top 10 acts in the Final.

So, please Linda, just get straight down to business and don’t beat about the bush like most of the spokespeople tend to do!

Before I go, I have to comment about the Interval Acts.

I have always liked Laura Pausini. I have always liked Mika. So, I was all excited when I found out that, as well as their presenting duties, they would be doing a duet during Semi-Final 2.

It was hopeless! :drama:

Also, because I like her, I have been holding my tongue. But, I can’t hold back any longer. Laura is not presenter material. To say she is wooden would be an understatement.

I think I heard that she has a solo number on Saturday night. So, I really hope that rescues the week for her.

As for the other Interval Act, what can I say? Rocked-up version of “Grande Amore” rocks!

Il Volo rocks. Who’d have thought it?

CaroLiza_fan

I found the first semi final much better than the second. Well, soon the final starts. I hope for Italy to win.

The Grand Final is starting now.

I won't be able to watch this LIVE. It is far too long for starting into at this time of night.

Oh, how I wish they would streamline the announcement of the results.

Tough decision...but I do think 🇳🇱 probably had the best singer. Amazed she did so well after the muy caliente level of sexiness shown by 🇪🇸.:eek::eek:

I also adore 🇦🇺 and 🇮🇸, but their performances seemed nervier than those in the semifinals. :(

Gotta give some shout outs to 🇪🇪🇵🇹🇨🇵 and of course 🇺🇦

Spoiler alert!

I gotta say, Ukraine totally deserved the victory. 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦 A very creative take on traditional music. I hope Ukraine is safe enough next year for Eurovision to be hosted there. 🙏

I would have also been happy if Spain won. Their sexiness, charisma, and singing ability was top-notch.

Rather surprised to see the judges give so much love to the UK entry, I thought his performance was just okay.

Also surprised at the love for Sweden. While she sang well, the song itself sounded suspiciously like "Shallow," and as such I found it too derivative.

Congratulations, Ukraine!
Apart of that, this is in fact the first time ever when I am happy that the jury vote exists.

This year, there was a string of elaborated performances that did not work well with the public vote because, you know, there are songs and there are trending topics and you have to be both to win the ESC. It was nice to see efforts like Azerbaijan or Switzerland appreciated at least by the juries. Also, I liked that Sam Ryder won the jury vote. What a voice! I am a bit disappointed that juries did not appreciate Finland - the old problem that juries keep putting a pop song above a rock song - but that's okay. The Rasmus hardly were in need of more recognition than they had already. They seemed to enjoy the party and this I believe was the best thing to do (and they got a point from Latvia so I didn't vote for them in vain, ha ha).

And now I'm guessing which song will go to figure skating program music next year ;)

That’s me finished with Eurovision.

For years, all we have been hearing is that Eurovision is political. And I get so angry when I hear this. And I try to argue that neighbouring countries don’t vote for each other because of politics; they vote for each other because it is only natural that neighbouring countries have similar tastes in music.

But the events of Saturday night have proved that I have been deluding myself all these years.

There is no way that a song where a large portion of it is rapping should be anywhere near the Top 10 of a song contest, never mind being the runaway winner.

If the song had stuck to being just traditional music, it would have been quite a good song. But, it didn’t. It had rapping as well. Which ruined the song.

It just goes proves what I have always said about the likes of Eurovision, the “X Factor”, “Britain’s Got Talent”, “Strictly Come Dancing”, “Dancing On Ice”, the ISU Awards, etc. The general public just cannot be trusted to vote for the best people. It becomes a popularity contest, not a song / singing / talent / dancing / skating contest.

Look at the results of the Jury Vote. The Top 10 positions were pretty much filled with the better songs from the Grand Final. Indeed, my favourite song topped the Jury Vote, with my third favourite song in 2nd. (Admittedly, my second favourite song was in 22nd, but you can’t have anything).

These Juries are made up of people who are experts in music. They know what they are talking about. The general public don’t. And you can see that when comparing the results of the two sets of votes. Here are just a few highlights:

  • The UK was 91 points ahead of the Ukraine in the Jury Vote, but was 256 points behind them in the Public Vote.
  • A joke song (Moldova) that was down in 20th in the Jury Vote finished 2nd in the Public Vote.
  • A weird song (Serbia) that was 11th in the Jury Vote finished 4th in the Public Vote.

Of course, we’ve had weak songs winning before due to topping the Public Vote after being beaten by better songs in the Jury Vote. Such as Israel in 2018. But, that was being of the public going for an upbeat song. This year’s winning song was not upbeat or fun or anything. Voting for it was pure politics.

As I’ve said many times before, politics have no place in entertainment and sporting events. Things like these are where people go to escape the problems of the real world.

But, there’s no point going over that old ground yet again, because some people just cannot accept that viewpoint.

That was what I wrote on Monday morning. I had watched the Grand Final in a couple of stages on Sunday (performances in the morning before the French MotoGP coverage started, and results in the afternoon after the bikes had finished), but I was so shocked and angry on Sunday evening that I decided to wait to see how I felt after I had had some time to take it all in.

Although I’m still angry with the results, I’ve calmed down sufficiently to write what I had been thinking in my head before the results of the Public Vote were announced.

Laura opened the show, and boys but she did redeem herself! She was brilliant!!!

But, I was getting so angry with Graham Norton for talking so much during her performance. It was a medley of snippets of her songs, and Graham talked during every transition.

Laura Pausini - Medley

I really wish Laura had got a longer slot, because it would have been nice to hear more of each of the songs. In fact, I wish she had got the headline slot during the interval that Mika had got to do his medley. Because her singing was much better than his! (Mika’s voice has changed so much since his heyday around 15 years ago that his old songs just don’t have the same impact).

As it turned out, it was a good job Laura didn’t get the interval slot, because she disappeared for most of the interval and the announcement of the Jury Vote results. I just read that it was because she was suffering from low blood pressure, so I hope it is much better now and I wish her all the best.

As for the quality of the presenting, it did not improve from the Semi-Finals. All three of them were still making me cringe every time they opened their mouths. During the interval, one of the trips down memory lane they showed had a clip of Måns Zelmerlöw singing his winning song, and I thought “he was a far better presenter than any of these three”. Come to think of it, I would love to see his co-presenter from 2016, Petra Mede, doing it for a third time. She was great too!

Mind you, if Laura hadn’t been presenting, we wouldn’t have got her great rendition of the 1958 Italian entry during one of the many occasions when the presenters were having to fill while sets were being changed. [Oh, how I miss the days when it was just the act and their microphone(s) on stage!] A rendition during which every single person in the audience was singing along for the whole song, and every single person watching on TV (including myself) joined in for the chorus!

Laura Pausini - "Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu"

(Never realised before that it was that line that was the title! Like many people, I just assumed the first word of the chorus was the title).

Of course, it’s not as if she’s never sung it before. Here she is singing it way back in 2006 as a duet with another Italian singer I like:

Laura Pausini and Eros Ramazzotti - "Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu"

Have to admit, I don’t think I like this arrangement. But they sing it well. And the video is worth watching if only to admire Laura’s dress!

Anyway, the other interval act was the singer and song that gave Italy their first Eurovision win back in 1964:

Gigliola Cinquetti - "Non Ho L’Età"

Yes, another song where everybody in the audience was singing along for the entirety!

Getting back to this year’s contestants, I should probably pass comment on the Pre-Qualified songs.

🇫🇷 France: This was so frustrating. This song had all the ingredients of what I want from a Eurovision song – e.g. the vocals weren’t in English; and the music had a Middle Eastern feel (I don’t know why, but I have always had a soft spot for Middle Eastern music). Unfortunately, the music had the beat ramped up to become overbearing, and it really spoiled the whole song. If this hadn’t been done, it would have been one of my favourites. But because it had, I didn’t mark it as a song I liked.

🇮🇹 Italy: A major problem with the Italian entry was that the audience were singing along for practically the whole song. Hence, we didn’t get to hear it properly! From what we did manage to hear, I loved the first two thirds of the song when they were singing. But I hated the section in the last third when they were shouting. That section totally spoiled the whole song for me.

🇪🇸 Spain: I liked that it was in Spanish, and Chanel did do a good job in singing it. On the whole, it wasn’t my taste in music, but I knew it would go down well with the fans. And not just because of the costumes. Or, rather, the lack of. I couldn’t believe it. Chanel was interviewed by Rylan Clarke during the BBC coverage of Semi Final 1, and she came across as a really nice girl. From that interview, I would never have guessed that her performance would be so risqué.

🇩🇪 Germany: Loved this song. Yes, there was a section of rapping. And yes, it did get to the stage that he was shouting. But, unlike in the Ukrainian or Italian songs, it actually worked in this song. And I think it was because it was only a relatively short section, and it tied in well with the backing music.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom: Where has this guy been hiding?! Never heard tell of Sam Ryder before this week (I managed to avoid all the BBC’s pre-Contest hype this year, thank goodness), but he was absolutely brilliant! After hearing the Finnish and Swedish entries in Semi-Final 2, I was next to positive that none of the songs from the Pre-Qualified countries could possibly overtake them as my favourite.

So, since I have already given away which acts were in my Top 3, I suppose I should now reveal my Top 6 from the Grand Final:

  1. 🇬🇧 Sam Ryder - "SPACE MAN"
  2. 🇫🇮 The Rasmus - "Jezebel"
  3. 🇸🇪 Cornelia Jakobs - "Hold Me Closer"
  4. 🇦🇺 Sheldon Riley - "Not The Same"
  5. 🇬🇷 Amanda Georgiadi Tenfjord - "Die Together"
  6. 🇦🇿 Nadir Rustamli - "Fade To Black"

For the first time in years, the UK act has not been chosen by a public vote in a TV show. And for the first time in years, the UK has an entry that is not just brilliant, but was a genuine challenger for the title. Coincidence? I think not! It just goes to show that the general public cannot be relied upon to choose somebody who will be successful at Eurovision.

It was very telling that Graham Norton kept mentioning during the announcement of the Jury Results that the executives at the BBC will be panicking because of how well Sam was doing. And then when the Public Votes were added in and we didn’t win, Graham said that they will be breathing a sigh of relief.

You see, the BBC has been drastically cutting back on their services for years to save money because the government is not letting them increase the Licence Fee. (Despite what the BBC says, the Licence Fee is actually too high. The problem is that the BBC has got far too many staff, who are being paid far higher than they should be! As a result, there isn’t enough money left after that to do everything the BBC used to do, and which we expect the BBC to still do). Because they are struggling with budgets as it is, the expense of hosting a Eurovision Song Contest is the last thing that the BBC wants!

With that in mind, it was a good thing that we didn’t win. That said, I can’t see how NTU are going to be in a position to be able to host the contest next year. Even if the war is over by then, it is going to take years for the country to recover. They can’t afford to be spending large amounts of money on trivial things like hosting Eurovision.

So, who knows where we’ll be heading next May.

While I liked the songs this year much better than last year's (2021 was the only year I did not like only one song and thus did not vote for any), it was one of the most disappointing results for me.

I mean it was clear Ukraine would win. And that's ok afterall, especially because it prevented worse things like UK, Moldova and the Spanish song that was no song, but a dance. I know that many liked UK, but also after multiple listenings there was no excitement for me. That Spain would be ranked high was clear for obvious reasons I don't share. It is certainly true, the popular vote did not help at all. Once again. Here many always demand to abolish the jury vote, but it would make things even worse. I mean I am critical of the jury vote because it is in the end 5 random people deciding, it says nothing about the country. You may think it is people who have musical education, experience and taste, but this has not to be the case (at least the German jury had no taste at all) and there is a lot of possibility for manipulation, which did happen in 6 countries. But yeah, the popular taste is questionable. Thinking that Switzerland would have ended with 0 points and Portugal and Iceland with hardly any. Terrible.

So I think the Italian song was by far the best, but the performance was not unfortunately. If they had performed at least like they did in Sanremo, it would have placed higher. But still not high enough unfortunately. Against Ukraine nobody could have won this year. And of course the ESC is a political competition, it has always been, sometimes more, sometimes less. One cannot prevent it. But since almost all countries gave their 12 points popular vote to Ukraine, there is not much arguing needed. Neighbour votes did not really play a role this time. The song itself was not bad, it was a typical Ukrainian one. And that's the best thing you could say about it. That you can identify a country behind a song. It was sung in their own language, so this is always a big plus for me. It had these ethno sounds one would relate to the country. So it is at least a song that is no copy of anything mainstream. It is authentic. Rapping I don't like either, but was part of many songs this time. So I try to see something positive in this win besides the political sign that of course is a positive one.

But I hope that in the future we will see beautiful songs winning again without reasons other than musical ones. Like Salvador Sobral winning in 2017. I still wonder how that was possible with the same audience we had last and this year.

The highlight of the whole ESC for me was Diodato singing Fai rumore in the semi final. I will be forever sad that he did not have the chance to win in 2020 because of the pandemic.
