Evgenia Medvedeva to train under Brian Orser

Not the smartest decision by Evgenia, politically. Unless there is somebody left in Russia to politic on her behalf, she will get buried in standing at National level and I hihgly doubt she will ever make the Worlds National team again.

Evgenia is one smart classy young lady. I too can’t wait to see what Orser and his team have in store for her. I think leaving Eteri is the best thing she could have done not only for herself but maybe for Eteri and her group. Things were getting mighty crowded.

"The main thing is she needs to have a voice in her own skating," Orser said. "We have been discussing music, what direction we want to go -- she has never had that luxury before. She told me it was, 'This is what you're skating to. This is the order of your spins, these are your spin positions.'''

"She is going to reinvent herself," Orser said of Medvedeva. "Even though she has some amazing titles, I feel they are the tip of the iceberg, that there is so much more she can do."

Will one of them be fixing the "flutz" -- the wrong edge takeoff on Medvedeva's triple lutz -- that has been a subject of controversy, since judges rarely call her on it?

"I'm going to do my best," Orser said, with a laugh. "I have been looking at it already. I'm not going try to disguise it or put it in a corner.

"That's not going to be an easy one, but I think she's open to this. She's open to the change."

I am so proud of my baby girl wanting to grow up and take charge of her own career and her own skating. :clapper:

So David Wilson is confirmed as her new choreographer. Very interested to see what music Evgenia will skate to next season now Brian is emphasizing she'll be more involved in the process of creating programs.

Gahhhh. Was hoping for Shae-Lynn.

I think the way Brian and Evgenia have commented publicly speaks more to their character than Eteri's comments on Evgenia. I think both teams should move forward.

I think it's so interesting that Orser thinks there's more to Evgenia than what everyone has seen so far. I am excited to see what he thinks she can do to maximize what she has already. I don't like that the article drawing comparisons between Yuna and Evgenia; the move is to distinguish herself and yet they are drawing comparisons between 2 vastly different skaters.

At least IceNetwork is still good for something.

Some interesting quotes:

"I really had a lot of respect for her instantly because she told me, 'I don't want to say anything bad about my current coaching situation.'''

Orser said he expects her to need more rehab for both the foot injury and a back problem but their intention is to have her ready for a Challenger Series event in early autumn and then the Grand Prix Series.

"What I have seen in her is that she is a fierce competitor, very reliable and, like Yuna, very headstrong," Orser said.

Orser said Medvedeva would work with him, Tracy Wilson and choreographer David Wilson, who has done Olympic gold-medal programs for Kim and Hanyu and world title-winning programs for Fernández.

"If we have our bad days, we have our bad days," Orser said. "I think it's great she is moving halfway around the world to do this."

Yaaasss! Evgenia with freedom is a beautiful thing to see - I think the key word is re-invent and I have a feeling she truly will be a whole new skater. I’ll love seeing what Orser, David, and her come up with and work on.

Me too! Although I wouldn't lose all hope yet, there's still a possibility that at least one of the programs will be made by someone else than David Wilson. There's always changes in these situations and she will only arrive in Toronto late June.

Evgenia saying she wants her own voice. She was always told what music to skate to. What spin positions to do.
This is good news to me. Maybe we’ll see some totally new spins and stuff from Evgenia! BO will work on her arm variations. The ONLY thing that worries me about this switch is that Evgenia will now Skate to tired old warhorses.

A good article with lots of great information. This seems to answer the questions some have had if Orser is really going to be helping her improve her technique - and sounds like he has a very good attitude about it as well :).

Considering everything, seems like a very exciting and promising move for Evgenia!

But some things are none of your business and quite disrespectful. This is a figure skating discussion board, not a gossip board about people's finances, personal lives etc.

It is not gossiping, it's a discussion on how an athlete pays for coach's fees. This aspect is also discussed in other sports, at times at length because it may involve taxpayers money(note: public money, ie. our tax money that we are paying). i.e. if the government is paying, paying half or sponsors paying, etc, etc, etc. We discuss it in an open and mature manner.

Only in figure skating sports forum do I find the "it's none of your business" statement like it's a taboo thing to discuss.

I prefer Shae and Jeff Buttle to David Wilson as well, but it makes sense that she will work with David, at least for her first season with TCC. He's on-site all the time, so she'll get the more frequent choreographic attention that she's used to having.

I am not surprised it's DW and am pleased.

But yes, she's no longer a child and she wants her own say. Not surprising in the least. Overall, very good stuff by Orser. Not too much and just enough.

My first reaction after I read "I want to win Gold in 2022" was a laugh. "Never", I thought, "never Evgenia, you're delusional." But then I thought of Aliona Savchenko after Sochi, when I had the exact same thought. "Never," I thought, back then, "Aliona, you're delusional....."
Perhaps they too had a long talk in South Korea. :)

Any case NO MORE AVERBUCH !

Just putting it out there, Medvedeva had the best possible conditions while training under Eteri. She is a Moscow girl and her family has lived in Moscow -- she was able to live a comfortable life staying at home with her parents and being the "star" of the rink from a very young age. Meanwhile Alina has left all of her relatives and lives alone in an apartment as a 15-year-old girl. Moscow is a very large and daunting city, and for a 15-year-old girl to live in a run-down one room apartment with just her grandma without any relatives and even close friends is very, very difficult (source). She is the only one I have sympathy for in this entire chaos. Alina is the true "cinderella" that truly sacrificed all and any of her comforts to pursue her dream. Meanwhile, Medvedeva is having a case of "stardom", as they say in Russia. She wants to be cool like the cool kids training with Orser so she's throwing a tantrum by going there. Poor Alina is the true martyr in this whole mess. And, everything Alina has done so far is with her own tears and sweat - she deserved those scores (mostly) without fake jump GOEs and reputation scoring.

Does DW mean no more gaping mouth? If so I will be very impressed. :drama:
